: How did your Big Paw get his/her name?
: lilysmom October 17, 2005, 09:20:18 PM
I thought it would be fun to find out how everyone came up with their pets names.

I'll start.

Lily was given her name by the rescue.  She responds good to it so I kept it.

Raven's name was almost Bear.  We were all in the car on the way home from getting her and everyone was giving ideas for her name.  My then two year old thought Chocolate cookie was good.  My oldest wanted Blackie.  My husband wanted Bear because she was so furry and cuddly.  I wanted Raven because she was pure black.  Guess who won??? he he he.  ME!!!!  It suits her now perfectly.  She's attracted to shiny objects. lol. :D

Lady was Nikki for a while.  It didn't fit and a friend suggested Lady.

Grace:  Well...I had a list of names from a name book.  Most of which my husband hated.
Grace was acceptable.  It's the name of the old lady I used to hang with when I was a kid.  Grace Thomas.  We all called her Aunt Grace.  So it's kinda nice to have her namesake.

Angus got his name because it starts with the letter "A". All the names in my family begin with A including all the pets we have had or have. Angus was all we could think of and when my wife suggested it, it just sounded right!! Now he looks just like an Angus to me.

Rocco was Rosco and Bosco for a few days then we settled on Rocco and it sure fits.  The rescue he came from had named him Magoo and I just couldn't call him that.

Maia means "goddess of growth", she was Lucy for a few days because my Dad insisted and just kept calling her that.  I just called her 'the puppy' until someone mentioned Maia.  Then she became Maia Lucy.

We got Tucker from (PAL) Protect Animal Life at PetSmart during adoption days.  We put him in the basket as we went around the store picking up all his new stuff he tuckered out on us.

When we got Tyra we wanted a name that went with Tucker; Tyra fit and they became TnT.

Scooter came to us as a foster and never left.  Mack likes the comedian that always says, "I don't think so Scooter" and had said that our next dog would be named Scooter.  I guess the fact that he was a brindle and already named Scooter it was just meant to be that he would find his forever home with us.

We chose Dakota because it means friend in one of the Native American languages.

Jade came from the "J" litter, so we needed a "J" name. I spent weeks looking for a name. My daughter decided on Jade, but I wanted something more. We ended up with Just A Gem Vom Sanften Loewen aka Jade.

I think Jade's name fits very well.

I hope you don't think I was making fun of it.  It's really long and I would never be able to remember a name like that.  I love the name Jade though.  :)

Before I knew Sanity even existed I was telling my friends how I thought it'd be hysterical to have a Dane named Sanity and call out "Sanity where are you?  Sanity come here.  Excuse me have you seen my Sanity?"  Like a week after I said this I get the call about Nee and it just fit, he was never to have any other name.  People ask where he got his name all the time and the more I told the story the stupider it sounded so now I say.  "People said I must be insane to get a Great Dane.  I just say I didn't lose my Sanity I found him."  It's much more poetic and people always say "Awwww".

Hobo I found on the side of the road.  He was going to be "Maro" short for Camaro, but Matts mom said "He's the cutest little Hobo I ever saw!"  That just fit him, and to give Matt his GM reference his middle name is "Harley Earl".

Araby just came around because Matt heard a song titled Araby, by the group the Sponge Awareness Foundation.  He picked the name because he liked it, but we found out that Araby in the song was named after Araby in the James Joyce story which was a racous wild and crazy fair.  Fits her perfectly.

Aspen IV came named to us... his litter was the A litter..

Kiahali means unique in hawaiiaan :)

Ohhhh!!!  I love coming up with names and hearing other's name stories!  :o)

Tenchi got his name from an Japanese Anime-Tenchi Muyo.  Tenchi means Heaven & Earth in Japanese.  Before I got him I had a huge list of German words and names to pick from.  However when he got to my house with his sisters, I noticed he had a big "T" on his bottom.  Well, just had to have a name that started with a "T" since he was already monogrammed  , and none of the German names did...  So I named him Tenchi and then his sisters-Washu & Ryoko after other characters in the show who's personalities perfectly fit the girls.  :o)  Marc was kind enough to keep their names after I was done fostering them.

Faust
was named after Goethe's Faust.  Jay picked it out but I had to approve it.  lol

Mojo was NOT named for the PowerPuff girls OR Austin Powers... ::)  After all, he'll be 9 this year.  He was named after a voodoo goodluck charm that everyone in our Vampire Tour was given by the Chicken Man in New Orleans(flashback to my goth years...).  Supposedly you get a wish if you throw it in water.  I figure its a perfect name for a dog, everytime he gets a bath, I get a wish!

Zeo has a name that was made up.  She's a blue merle bi and as a puppy had a very distinct black mask and eyeliner.  So I combined the names Zorro and Cleopatra and got Zeo.  lol

Kida came to us with the name Princess.  No offence, but anyone who knows me understands that just doesn't fit.  Tori wanted to keep her name Princess so we compromised.  I named her AFTER the princess Kida in the disney movie Atlantis.  I figured the princess had white hair and blue eyes, and so did she .  ;o)

Gyrl was a deaf stray that wandered into our house last November.  Spencer kept calling her Ol'dog since she's like 12+ years.  Finally we just dubbed her Ol'Gyrl but lately its been shortened to plain Gyrl.

Torch is Spencer's tortishell guinea pig with a orange flame on his nose.  I wanted to call him Flame, but the kids didn't like it so we settled on Torch.  ;o)

Rainbow bridge babies-
Tika was named after a strong, selfconfident and powerful woman character in the Dragonlance series.  As a puppy, Tika was abused and neglected and had a pretty rough beginning.  So she really needed a strong name to help her overcome it.

Zephyr was named after the god of the west wind because he relied on his sense of smell since he was deaf and blind.  I just about had a breakdown when right after he left us, the Red Hot Chili Peppers put out "the Zephyr Song".  Tori and I still cry everytime it comes on, the lyrics are just so fitting!

Mekare and Maharet were black cat twins, 1/2 siamese.  They were named after the vampire twins in the Anne Rice series.  Mekare has passed away, but my Mom still has Retti, except she renamed her "Beebies"!  :o   Can you believe it?  :P

Deiti was a calico(mostly torti) kitten that my MIL's coworker found in her driveway in the middle of a blizzard.  She was all of 3 days old, if that.  I ended up raising her and we discovered that she had attitude early on.  She thought she was a goddess, so Deiti it was!  lol  She is with my Mom also and was redubbed "Deedi" on her arrival.  :P

There's my list, sorry for rambling.  :o)

I'm a huge history buff, and I specialize in Greek/Roman mythology, so for my first dog....Zeus.

Zeus' mom was this HUGE gold Akita/Malamute. We have big hopes for Zeus, as he was the largest and most active of the litter. ::) Hmmmmm.......t he hopes were big, Zeus didn't quite match up. *lol* So....

when we brought Apollo home, he was this cute golden fluff-ball, so we tried for the Sun God this time. He far-surpassed the size of his poor brother, so the sun rules in our house.

Onyx came to us with that name. We've toyed a couple of times with changing it, but so far nothing has struck us yet. I tossed Hades on the table and my husband looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

Our cats are named by the kids, so we have Mysti (don't ask me where that one came from, I have no idea!) and Stitch, as he is the most favorite Disney character in the household. (And yes, our Stitch steals everyone's left shoes and leaves mayhem and Chaos wherever he goes!)

Abbi: we were just coming up with possible name for her on the way back from picking her up and our son who was 2 at the time just started to call her Abbi, which was one of the names we had said so she became Abbi.

Molly: With Molly we had started as soon as we had picked her out. we had to wait a month to pick her up but still could not come up with a name. When we picked her up I was holding her in my lap and said I wanted to name her Molly because she reminds me of Stief Bear I had when I was younger named Molly and she felt just like that bear. It was a special bear to me because I saved up my very small allowance and paid for her myself.

Most of the cat came to us already named and once you foster a cat for so long it is hard to change their name.

OK, this is going to be a long list if I include everyone so I'll just do the dogs:

Oasis: I got him from a friend of my boyfriend at the time who was in a band. The only song i liked that they sang was called "Lost in Oasis", so there you go...

Rocko: He is an australian shepherd and we wanted an australian name. The cartoon Rocko's Modern Life was popular at the time so, again, there you go...

Mia: She is an australian cattle dog and came to us with 6 day-old puppies. We wanted to give them all australia-related names. The aborigines call an old woman who acts as a mother figure for their tribe, or a medicine-type woman a "Mia". Her puppies were Darwin, Olivia (Newton-John), Sydney, Bindi (after the Crocodile Hunter's daughter) and I can't remember the other 2, sorry.

Bindi: see above

Buster Brown: since I am known as the animal-lady in my neighborhood, one of the neighbor boys came to my house one day and said, "there's a dog running around and I wanted to know if you wanted it."  I asked him what kind of a dog. He said, "I think it's a collie." "A collie???" I replied. "No, it's not a collie," he said. "It's more like a . . . like a . . . like a Buster Brown."  Well, when I stepped outside to look for him, I saw this skinny little beagle with ears much too big for his skinny little head. The name just kind of stuck.

Keiko remained unnamed for a couple of weeks after I got her.  I just couldn't come up with anything I liked.  I liked the name Kei, but thought it was too short, so I played around with various suffixes...... .............K eito (almost named this), Keilo, Keiro, and finally settled on Keiko.  Found out last year it means "adored one" in Japanese, and this spring found out it also means "strong current" in Hawaiian.  Pronounced the same in Hawaiinan (not sure if it's spelled the same.......... .guy at the beach heard me calling her and told me what it meant).  Spelled the same in Japanese, but not pronounced the same.  Japanese:  Kay-koe..............I pronounce it Kigh-koe (rhymes with psycho).

With Gunther the breeder wanted to know his name so she could start getting him to respond to it. I normally don't like naming them before seeing them (he was shipped out to us), but worked with what I had.  I came up with a list of about 15-20 names, and left it up to my husband.  I wanted to include him in the process b/c he really didn't want such a big dog.  So I got the color he wanted and let him choose a name off my list.  He wanted to name him Hoss.......... ..like that was going to happen.  My first choices were Diesel and Guiness, which I thought were great names for brindle dogs, but he vetoed them right away.  I had a few German names on there and he chose Gunther, which also happened to be my least favorite name on the list.  But I think it suits him now.

Lacy (my cockatiel for those who don't know) we got from the humane society.  She came with the name Lucy, and I didn't like that name for her, but didn't want to change it a whole lot in case she knew her name.  So Lacy it is.

Bava = Drool (in Italian)

HAHA I love it! ;D

I hope no one minds but I'm going to do all my animals.

Big Paws
Maggie- We got Maggie when I was like 11 and my twin was obsessed with that name so my mom let her name her that.

Small Paws
Marty- We were picking names out of a hat and that's the name that was chosen.

Alex- He was already named when we got him.

Roxabella- The first dog I was ever allowed to name myself! Originally I was going to get a pit bull puppy and the names were already chosen Roxxi for a girl or Chachi for a boy. Well I didn't get my pit bull puppy but when I got Roxabella Roxxi became her first name! Then my cousin got a pug puppy and named her Bella, so  compromised Roxxibella, it didn't sound right so I made it Rox-A-Bella. hehe I like it, it's unique and I hope no other dog has it!

Cats
Colin- we got him when I was like 1 so I don't know the story behind his name.

Princess Tiger Lily Fluff (a.k.a. Lily)- We rescued her after she had been hit by a car and her owners didn't want to take her to the vet and left her out to die. Well after we had her heal up a bit she desperatly wanted outside, well she always played in our Tiger Lilys and that's where her first name came from. Princess was added after she figured out she could get whatever she wanted when she meowed and then Fluff because she has to much of an attitude to be called Fluffy :P So Fluff it became!

R.I.P. Poppy- he was named because he liked to pop out of no where and surprise you.

Birds
Sunny- already named when we got her.

Keeley- means beautiful in Irish and I was looking on name sights and came across it. I like it but her nickname is Chicken, lol.

Gordo- already named when we got him, fits him perfectly because he likes puff out and look fat, that's where he got his nickname Pigeon.

Paulie- someone found him outside and gave him to us, when we first got him we thought he was a conure like the bird in the movie "Paulie" so we named him after him. Well, now I've been calling him Demon or Damien. I swear someone let him out on purpose because he's so evil!

other
Melvin(a.k.a. Melvinian)- my green iguana, I named him after my aunt's old iguana Melvil and after Chuckie's pet bug, Melvin(from the t.v. show "Rugrats").

Squishy- My guinea pig. I got him while on vaca in Texas and was sitting in my cousin's room with him, everyone else was downstairs watching "Finding Nemo" and I heard that part with Dory saying I shall call him squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my squishy Come on, squishy Come on, little squishy. lol and Squishy started to wheek really loud at that, he still does when I say it, so I guess he likes that name!

Dot- My quarter horse, I ride. Her registered name is Little S B so my riding instructor was just looking for a quick name to call her so no one would be calling her Son Of A **tch because of her show name. She has a blaze and on her nose is a Dot so it became her name.

This new guy doesn't have a name, but he's slowly turning into either a Crunchy, a Crusty or a Mowgli from the Jungle Book....

Zoey doesn't really have a fun story behind her name. When we decided we were ready to get her, we played the name game back and forth for a week. Dan would suggest a name, I would veto it. I would suggest a name, he would veto it. Finally, one of us suggested zoey and we both loved it, so voila, she became Zoey.

Dozer got his name when he was a few days old. There were 10 puppies and eight nipples. When the pups were eating 2 would be left without a nipple. If Dozer happened to be one of the unlucky ones you would see puppies being dozed out of the way, like a bulldozer coming through.

Grizelda was a abandoned puppy in a ditch. She was always ready for a fight. Her coloring is not really black, it's kind of greyish. I found her name in a baby name book. It said it meant grey woman warrior. It fit her.

Gretchen was a 9 month old hound from petfinders. They had her named Goofy. I could not see calling her that. So I came up with a name that started with g.

Marksman was already named when we got him. His name fits because he will mark everything when he is outside.

Echo is named because she is Marksmans neice and looks alot like him, sort of an echo of Marksman.

Tealk is named after a character on Stargate. I always thought that is what a Rottweiler would look like if he was human.

We were originally going to name our son, if we have a boy, Drake.  But my sister had a boy and named him Blake. (her name is Beth, her husband is Bret and her daughter is Britney, yes you can barf now)  Sooo, we didn't want any potential confusion on our boys names, they would hate us for that, so we thought we would just name our Newf, Drake.  His official AKC name is Bacchanal's Sir Anakin Drake, a very Marin/Star Wars name and the rest is history....  Do I sound extra weird now?
: Re: How did your Big Paw get his/her name?
: Anakalia October 18, 2005, 06:41:15 AM
This is so interesting! I love all the names, they're all so unique.  Mine are not so unique but oh well. lol

Ramsey, my maltese was named ROMEO by the breeders!! JEEEESH!  We could not bring ourselves to keep that name, because that name didn't fit him at all.  He's a horrible dog, very dominant, try's to rule the world with his nasty bada$$ self..... so we settled on Ramsey as in Ramseys the Great (Egyptian history).

Koby's story is soooo not even interesting.  His name was Toby when we brough him home.  Tony said,"I'm not having another dog named Toby!"  He grew up with an vicious ankle biting mojo named Toby when he was younger so with that name brought very bad memories of a dog that tried to eat him constantly.  I wanted to name Koby, Logan, because I LOVE that name, but for recognition purposes and the fact a couple of people I had talked to said he'd get used to a new name easier and quicker if we found a name that rhymed with Toby, hence his new name Koby. ::)  I know I know, way super lame.  His full name is Kobalt Blue (which he's called that everytime he gets into trouble 4-5 times daily), but Koby for short. ;D

Kiah didn't have a name for weeks after we got her. We just called her puppy and she responded to that very well. After we named her she responded to puppy better for at least a month afterward. We waited too long. Luckily she now knows her name.

I like unique names. It was so hard. Our top picks were Kiki, Kumba or Kimba (an old lion cartoon). Our lizards have egyptian names. We also had her parents to consider in the name. We finally saw Kiah and it just fit. It was australian aboriginal, so we stayed with an all australian name. Kiah Tajsa of Allinga. Kiah means "from the beautiful place" Tajsa of Allinga means "Princess of the Sun". My husband likes to call her Kumba Kiah and I soemtimes call her Ki.

The week before I got Diesel, we were driving a Diesel truck, borrowed it to help us move. Then my husband gave me Diesel and he was so small, that i thought he needed a big name. I figured Diesel Trucks are big and I liked that name, so that is how Diesel got his name LOL

Poor Zeus.....I couldnt think of anything and to me he looked like a Zeus. I know pretty simple and boring LOL

Mr. Grey got his name like 3 yrs before I owned him. I was watching the movie DreamCatcher, and there was some one named Mr. Grey. First thing I thought of was a merle dane LOL I turned to Ben and told him I was getting a merle dane and naming him that. Well 3 yrs later. I got Mr. Grey  ;D

My first newf was Hightower.  He came from Lighthouse kennels and when the kids asked me what a light house was, I explained it was a "high tower" on the beach the helped light the shores for boats, etc... They had just seen the Police Academy movie with a BIG black officer named Hightower...an d thought that was THE name for the pup.   Riley, just 'cause my dau. wanted a goldie named Riley.  And Webster... I had wanted another newfie for years, when I knew I was getting one, I started thinking up "good newfie names" (Hightower was a perfect name for that dog).  Anyway, after days and days of thinking and nothing sounding just right, the name Webster came to me in the middle of the night, waking me from a sound sleep. I thought it was a great "newfie name".  Now Webster 'looks like' a Webster!

CabezaCabeza means "head" in Spanish. When he first came to live with us, he was a foster. He had heartworms and was generally unhealthy looking and kinda gangly. (He was 1). But his head was still big. Since we weren't that hip on keeping him, we mostly just called him Big Head. Or Big Tard. Or the big head dog. (He came with the name Howie, but we simply couldn't call him that!)

Once we fell in love and decided to keep him, Mark wanted to call him Cliff. (GAG!) I told him no way. We wanted to name him something in Spanish (don't know why, we just did) and we considered Oso. (means "bear" in Spanish). We were still kinda calling him Big Head, and we finally settled on Cabeza. It just seemed right.

Pierre Pierre is the big fat orange tabby that was left by his mama. Originally, he was named Dixie Darlin', cuz my boyfriend thought he was a girl. Once we discovered he was a boy, he kind of remained nameless for awhile. He was pretty feral and a total demon. There is a children's book about a little punk kid named Pierre. Pierre always does naughty things, and there is a line that goes, "I don't care!", said Pierre. Anyway, my SIL was over one day, and she was like, "You cat looks like Pierre from that book." And I thought, yeah, and he acts like him, too. So, there ya go.

Kyle When I brought Kyle home from the Humane Society, his name was Pete. I just didn't like it that much. He used to snuggle on Pierre all the time, and follow him around the house. We used to joke that he was kinda like Kyle from South Park...I don't really know why...anyway.. .he became Kyle. Oh, I know! hahaha! Cuz Pierre would act like Cartmen.

Lex Luthor I don't know. He's all black. I started calling him that, and it just fit. Now he's Lex or Lexxie.

Bozak (gone to the bridge) I couldn't come up with a name for him. One day I was sitting outside with some friends and my brother, watching him roam and sniff around the yard. We were all throwing names out. Bo hadn't been neutered yet, and he had quite the package. After listening to a bunch of names, my brother got up to leave and said, "I don't know about a name, but he's got quite a Bozak on him." I started cracking up and that became his name. Unfortunately, my alcoholic tenant downstairs ALWAYS called him "ballsack" after that. Oh well. I guess that's my fault...

Wow!
I'm Dull.
Tulsa was named by the shelter that I rescued her from.
Her former owner said her name was "Mandy"!
"Mandy?"
I will not have a dog that has any connection to a Barry Manilow song!
Sorry, I'm Eric Clapton, and Jackson Browne, with a lot of Tom Petty and Bob Dylan thrown in. So I gagged at 'Mandy'. It made "Tulsa" not sound so bad, besides, Mom liked it. Although she would call her "Dallas" sometimes, and 'Chelsea', my daughters name, or 'Sierra', my granddaughters name.

Love this thread.
My first Dane was Mercedes, but we called her Sadie. I thought she would be big and beautiful. and she was.
Sophia (dane) was named after a movie charater
Shyla(dane) was supposed to be Cheyenne, but she was so shy and timid when I got her I changed it.
Neno,(pit) I'm not sure where my daughter came up with that one.
Tyson,(pit) he would bite your ear as a puppy - so Mike tyson, get it?
Now we have my son's dogs here too.
D.O.G.(lab) ( stupid kid named his dog, dog.) but is pronounced deeogy or something
Rockford (rottie) not sure where that came from
and last but not least
Bull Dozer (pit) a sevear rescue pup, I would have called him little sh**.He was turned in by a rescue group to be put to sleep because he was too far gone. But was so cute (green eyes) the Vet saved him and now we have him. They named him Hershey??

We were originally going to name our son, if we have a boy, Drake.  But my sister had a boy and named him Blake. (her name is Beth, her husband is Bret and her daughter is Britney, yes you can barf now)  Sooo, we didn't want any potential confusion on our boys names, they would hate us for that, so we thought we would just name our Newf, Drake.  His official AKC name is Bacchanal's Sir Anakin Drake, a very Marin/Star Wars name and the rest is history....  Do I sound extra weird now?

Newf,  I did sort of the opposite that you did.  Keith used to always say if we had a boy we would call him after his great grandfather, Malachi.  We could shorten it to Mac, which is fine but Malachi.  I had visions of my son getting the snot beat out of him when his real name is discovered.  So, evil me, named our puppy Max.  When we were picking names for our first born Malachi came up and I innocently said "But Mac sounds alot like Max, there might be some confusion there".  She shoots, she scores.  It didn't matter anyway, we have two girls.  LOL.

Tina

HAHAHAHA!  It figures you'd have 2 girls.  That just goes to show, don't plan on having a certain sex baby because you never know.  We're supposed to have a bunch of boys, according to the old Catholic School Girl trick, but there are a lot of women on both sides of our families, so I don't know about that.

Hi Everyone!

I hope all people and pups are doing well!  My Newfie Girl Madison got her name because my Dad is an avid fly fisherman.  One of his favorite fishing spots is the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park.  This is how Maddie girl got her name.  She being a Newfie girl loves to swim and she is an absolute joy.  So  her full registered name is Calamaka Madison River O' Joy.

Big Brother Klondike was supposed to be Tatonka which means Buffalo.  When we first met  him at a few days old til the day we brought him home, we decided that he was such a sweet ole' bear.  We thought he was sweet and black & white like a Klondike bar, so that is how he got his name.

Our little Kelso pup brother is named for the place in Scotland where Braveheart is buried.  When he was little, he had a white spot in the shape of a heart on his hip in his black fur.  It was adorable, plus we have Irish Scottish heritage, so the name fit.

I think I have that on Nooky's profile but...I like answering this question lol.

Nanook got his name from that movie, the Lost Boys.  Of course, the dog in the film was a Malamute, but nonetheless, I thought Nanook was a cool name for him, so it just stuck.  He seems to like it too, so  ;D

Well my crew got their names quite simply. Jalapeno and  Pinto (chis) got their names before I even got them;being mexican, Henry was actually called Henly Finco, but no one could pronounce his name (which we got from a sign that "looked" British) so it became Henry Finkle, although, we only ever call him fat-kid these days  ;)

Ok I'll add in my crew

The Puppers:
Kalamity: well it was narrowed down to Keira, Kalamity, and Grace.  But Kalamity fit her the best and had the best nickname of Kali...it was my creation to spell with a K.

Lacey: My sister named her that because of her merle coat.

The Kitties
Tick: Named by the everyone at the vet clinic my mom works at.  She has a little head and a huge body so everyone said she looked like a tick and it stuck....I liked Matilda...but I lost out.

Hannah:  Named by my sister as well...I think it was a movie character at the time

The Horses
Gabriella:  Named so for the German origin and she was a very gabby baby.

Wishful Thinking:  Well you get the idea from the name.  Her barn name is Penney....beca use she is the exact color of a new penny in the sun.

I'll upload pics later of everyone.

wow, neat thread... :) sorry i missed it way back when
Anyway...
Our dane, zeussy boy (RIP). was named zeus, as many many dogs are... But, he was special, his breeder nicknamed him ZuZu, thats kinda wussy i though, so i called him Zeus-Caboose, he followed me everywhere... but zeus DID suit him. very regal very loyal. and very hansome.
Memphis, our 2.5year old fawn dane, was actually named after a cat darcy met at the vet clinic he worked at, at the time. I didnt care for it at the time, i wanted to name him Cash or Riot... But then i watched Gone in 60 seconds, YES a little late to be watching it ha ha ha, and i realized Nicolas cage's character was Memphis... so thats how Mem got his name...
Zero, my brindle & White bull terrier... was supposed to be a white... but the whites were spoken for, and i fell in love with his lip marking... and had to have him! But, i am a HUGE tim burton fan, and well, Zero comes from Nightmare before christmas, Jacks little Ghost Dog... Unfortunately, zeros not white, like jacks dog, but i love him just as much as i would if he was a white!
Tribute, our new bullie female, came with that name. if i could change it, i would. LOL but shes not even english so its hard enough to get her to understand us...

My OTHER pets:
Iguana-Cloud: Final fantasy 7's main character... I always wanted to name my son Cloud, at the time i think i was uhmmm 16? And my mom named my Iguana cloud, thinking i wouldnt name my son Cloud ha ha ha. Nobody thinks its a good name for a person. PFFT ;)
Green Basilisk- Lil' Guy: Hes little, and hes a guy... ha ha i actually named him T-rex. but its kinda a stupid name. who calls out "Hey there t-rex, hows ya doin today? are ya hungry" Well of course he is hes a t-rex LOL jk
Costa Rican Zebra tarantula-Webley: Doesnt spin webs, needed a good name for her- remember that cartoon BOBBY'S WORLD? he had a stuffed spider toy named Webley ;)
Cats:
Simba- we got him about 11 years ago now... He looked just like simba, in the lion king, at the VERY beging of the movie, u know, when Rafiki sprinkles dust on his head?
Sabbath- hes a black cat... Black Sabbath (OZZY RULES, oh yah)
BobCat (RIP). she was our first manx cat... resembled a bobcat when we got her...
Kimahri- Final Fantasy 10... the Cat dude, i dont know what he is... but kimahri looked like him... well, his markings
Lil' Meow- Our new calico manx... she used to MEOW all the time. we called her Mimic, because if u'd MEOW, she'd Meow right back... we eventually called her Lil Meow, because she meows so little and quite...

I think thats all. other than my fish, but, my fish are lame names... Damsel Fish = Damsel... Foxface Lo= Foxface... Clownfish= Marlin (i know i know... Everyone called him nemo... i had to be different. hes named from nemos dad)

Fun stories, everybody!!

Our first Newf, a Landseer named Otis, was named for Otis Redding..."Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" and it suited him perfectly!  It amazed me when people would ask if he was named for the elevator company?!!?

Lucille...she reveals the dubious side of my character.  The breeder we got Otis from called me and said he a had a female Landseer who wasn't spoken for and I had 5 minutes to decided if I needed to add a girl.  Didn't take that long ;D. DH was dead set against having too many dogs but I convinced him that we were pregnant with a female Newf and she would be named for his restaurant.  He succumbed.  Cowboy came with his name...

Chester is named for the town closest to our cabin in Northern California.  It's a funny, tiny town that has a biker bar called the Plumus Club.  How can you NOT love a town like that???

: longshadowfarms March 24, 2006, 10:04:24 AM
This is a fun thread!  I enjoy reading all the name stories.  I have to start at the beginning for ours.  The first male Lab my DH chose the name since it was his dog.  Big, black hunting dog, he chose the name Brant (Sarah's Storming Brant) for the goose.  Sarah was his mom's name.

When I got my chocolate Lab, I stuck with bird names and called her Jaeger (Kresland's Sea Squall Jaeger).  Kresland was the kennel name of her breeder.

We were originally going to call Piper "Petrel" but my SIL thought that sounded like gas so I challenged her to come up with something better.  She said Piper, short for Sandpiper (yellow lab) which we loved so being Brant's daughter she became Stormtossed Sandpiper, Piper for short.

Josh was the 4th Josh owned by a man who eventually became one of our dearest friends.  All were huge powerhouse yellow hunting Labs.  He is Josh of Kashong IV.  Kashong was where he lived.  Interesting, we co-owned a female and bred her to the son of the original Josh of Kashong.  It's a small world.  Anyway, when our friend was dying of cancer, we promised him we'd take Josh and Jesse back when he died.

Jesse went with Josh and the owner was trying to figure a name that would go well with Josh.  His wife had not spoken to him for 3 days after bringing home the two pups but I guess she must have gotten over it because she suggested they name Jesse after her grandfather.

Thor was named by the rescue group that we got him from and I never could come up with anything better so we left it as Thor.  I always called him "Woo" since all night long he would say "woo, woo, woo."

Eider is actually Franklin Hills Classified but the breeder called him Dion.  We could NOT see calling a black male dog Dion so we went back to the bird books for help.  DH constantly teases me that he wants to call a dog Booby.  I vetoed that.  Process of elimination we finally ended up with one we could both live with and now he is Eider.

One truly fittingly named animal we had was a cat.  I'm allergic to cats so we could never have one in the house but we used to get a lot of strays that we'd feed for a while, then they'd get hit by cars.  We just never bothered to name them.  So finally we had one cat that stuck around for a year, we decided we might as well get shots and what not so we took it to the vet and they wanted a name.  Well, the only name we had was "cat."  Anything else?  Well, I suppose cat is just his last name since we usually call him That Darn Cat.   ::)

I won't torture you with all the cow's names except my milk cow who was Carnation (Instant Milk).

: Mom2Sadie March 24, 2006, 10:32:24 AM
Oooh! Fun!

Sadie got her name because she chose me. Her kennel name is Sadie Hawkins Ladies Choice. She was the only puppy who when I put her down after holding her, she tried to jump right out of the whelping box and cried for me to pick her back up. Plus she just kind of looks like a Sadie I think. I sing "Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady" from Funny Girl to her when I'm feeling fanciful ;)

Gus-Gus was a stray and when I found him he was flea ridden, skin and bones, worms, ticks, you name it. T.S.Elliot wrote a series of poems about Cats (the musical CATS is based on them) and I'm a theatre girl. In the poems, Gus was the cat at theatre door and he was sort of grizzled and shabby. It was perfect for him. Then when he got healthier and turned into a fat b@stard, I started calling him Gus-Gus after the chubby little mouse from Cinderella.

Maggie was named from Tennesee Williams "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". The lead character in the play is Margaret who calls herself Maggie the Cat. She's evil and manipulative but vulnerable and sort of likeable at the same time. The first time I picked up Miss Maggie she hissed right in my face and I said "Ok, you're Maggie the Cat". I had also just played the role a month before I got her. She's not a hisser anymore, she's actually a doll - the cuddliest, most talkative cat I've ever met (besides Gus) but she is quite a prissy little girl so I think her name still suits her.

I like hearing all the names.  So here is how my dogs got their names.

Marty - (Boston Terrier) was named after Marty Feldman but she is also known as Muerte.  Especially fitting since she has started 2 dog fights and nearly died both times.

Cinder - It was the first name that she responded to when we picked her up.  We had been coming up with names on the drive back home and we stopped off at a friends house to show her off.  I said Cinder and she immediately came to me.  So the name stayed.

Kaila - I couldn't come up with a name that fit her for a week or so but I knew I wanted to stay in the fire reference catagory since she is a full sister to Cinder.  So I found an aboriginal name meaning fire and changed the spelling up a little bit.

Holly got her name because her previous name was olive which

1. I really didn't like
2. It didn't fit her at all!
3. We eat a large amount of olives esp during the holidays and the poor girl would get confused everytime we talked about one of our fav foods.

We chose Holly because it sounded like her previos name and would be less confusing.  It's not easy finding a name similar to olive in a hurry.  Someone asked me if I got her at xmas because of it though.  ::)

Lets see....

I rescued Blu from The ATL Humane Society when he was 4... he knew his name so I kept it. But, I dropped the e from Blue so he wouldn't have any babd memories from his life before me.  :)

Ellie was 8 weeks old when I got her.... her name was chosen after a brain-storm session with some friends.

Riley was 6 when we rescued him.... he also knows his name, so we kept it. But I've knick named him "Donkey" (Donks for short) which is what I call him most of the time.  ;D

Angel - i named her before she was even mine :P the girl who had her before when angel was a clumsy 8 week old puppy couldn't think of a name, i asked her if she liked aerosmith she said she loves them so i  said to name her angel after their song.. and it does fit shes a perfect angel ;D

Bruiser - cause when he was a puppy he looked like a giant bruise lol, and he was scared of everything so a big tough name was funny for a tiny ball of fluff that was scared of his own shadow

Chewie - when he was a puppy he yawned and sounded like chewbacca from star wars  :D

Now for my cat..

Annie - she was orphaned at the age of 1 1/2 weeks , i bottle raised her.. shes my little orphan annie  :)

My snake

Hydra - i LOVE greek mythology and Hydra means the water serpent, and hydra loves swimming so it fit him

My beautiful baby at the rainbow bridge

Dotty - i was 8, she was a dalmatian lol dotty was 1st thing out of my mouth

Boo's full name is "Riley's Ghost Said Boo".  The first time I saw her she just looked like a Boo.  And after I found out that she was deaf, I thought it was even more fitting.  I also liked the name Ghost but couldn't decide between the two.  The Riley part comes from my daughter's last name.  Besides, Boo is pretty easy do in sign language!

Lucas--named after the county I grew up in...for some reason people in my family started doing this and Lucas really fit his personality(my aunt has a jack russel named Renfrew and my brother has a jack/chi named Warren)

Smsmith-I grew up in San Antonio. When I was a kid, I used to think it should be pronounced "Bear-x-ar", b/c the way people said it and the way it's spelled made no sense to me. Of course, neither did my way of saying it. LOL

Sadie got her name b/c I came up with a list of names and had my then-bf help choose. I had veto rights, but I liked the names for the most part (hey, I made the list). He liked Sadie.

Riley wasn't supposed to be Riley. I had a list of names picked out and thought I was going to call him Rory. Then he got to me, and Rory didn't fit him, nor did any of the other names. I went through name lists for a few days, and Riley just "fit".

Hmmm, maybe I should steal your idea. The next pet would be San Diego.  Speaking of signs, maybe this is a sign that I should get a Saint and name him Diego.  What do you guys think?  Am I rationalizing the need for another dog enough?

Saint Diego would be too funny.

Actually one of the rat terriers we are aquiring, will be named Diego/Nigel (previously Luke).  He will have two names b/c I just plain can't decide, and I will like having a reminder of our time here in San Diego after we move. Nigel b/c it goes with Posey (see below), and I'm hoping the posh name will rub off of this hellraiser.

The other is named Posey......... .she came with that name, and it fits her perfectly.

I don't know if I posted on this thread before or not...Samson was supposed to be Bullwinkle but when we met him he was too serious & majestic to be Bullwinkle so we dubbed him Samson...a.k.a . Sammy Whammy...It fits!...Pippin was already named after the Lord of The Rings character...We were supposed to get his sister Arwen (also named after LOTR) but sadly she went to the bridge the very week we were to go get her...Arwen was to be named fully after her great grandpa "Wolf"...He AKC name was to be "Tanimara's Memory of Wolf" but right before she went on to The Bridge I had a dream that she should be "Tanimara's Whisper of Wolf"...So, I decided to go with that...Evident ly Pippin was meant to carry the Memory of Wolf name & he is proudly Tanimara's Pippin Memory of Wolf...Arwen will forever be our lil' whisper girl though... Our rescue Rosie was named by my hubby because he said she looked like a "precious white rose who needed some tlc to fully bloom...She is blooming nicely  for us. :)

I will not have a dog that has any connection to a Barry Manilow song!
Sorry, I'm Eric Clapton, and Jackson Browne, with a lot of Tom Petty and Bob Dylan thrown in.

Which begs the question, why was a Gene Pitney song okay?  ;D

I suppose I better add something rather than just being sarcastic.  ;)

My first dog was called Dingo as she just looked like Dingo cub as a puppy. Her best friend was a little black cat who my step dad thought it would be funny to call Sambo... no we're not members of the KKK, but we are definitely politically incorrect. When she passed on at 19 years old, we never got another cat as she was one in a million.

Next dog was a black chow we rescued from a life tied up behind a pub. His original name was Smokey, but it didn't suit him. He immediately got called Taz after the cartoon character because he was very 'talkative' and sounded just like him!

Next were Tinkerbell and Phoebe, the shar-pei. Both came to me with these names and they suited them very well, so much so I couldn't think of anything better.

Flynn... I had so many names thought up for him before I picked him up. Lots of mythical, noble, Tibetan names. But when I saw him, none of them suited him and the name Flynn seemed perfect. His kennel name is Kaltekhna Midnight Lover and he was born in Ireland. So it just seemed so perfect for him... sounds Irish... Errol Flynn is a famous on screen lover... mind you, I think it's much cooler to just claim he's named after the lead singer of Machine Head!  :D

Libby the shar-pei I've known since she was born. Her kennel name is Chadson State Of Liberty (her dad's an American Champion Baggins Texas Ranger). Her breeder wanted Statue Of Liberty, but she remembered she'd named one of her rottweiller puppies that about 20 years ago, so she went with Liberty as it's a county of Texas and her sister was Madison County! So Libby is short for Liberty.

I thought 'Tulsa' was appropriate, considering her rough and tumble ways.
What does Gene Pitney have to do with it?
"Town without Pity" is a great tune!
And then I spelled her name backwards, and it all fell into place! :-* ;D

"Cause I was only, 24 hours from Tulsa..."  ;D

And spelling her name backwards? I'm sure I don't know what you mean... but strangely enough, if I spell Flynn backwards, it spells dratsab ;D

Pity you don't know his pedigree, handsome dog none the less.
Flynn and Tulsa have very similar coloration.
Tulsa is very prey oriented, and will chase squirrels before she will play with others at the dog park.
She cruises the perimeter of the park looking for trangressors, and stalks them. Only when the 'puppies' interupt her hunting will she play. She's getting very 'Cranky' in her old age!
She's almost 4 years old, and has 'issues' when I pay attention to other dogs. She will lie at my feet and pounce on other dogs that come up to me. Not aggresively, but just to tell them that she is the 'Queen', and that they should ask permission!

I do know his pedigree - he's actually a KC registered Tibetan Mastiff. I can trace his lineage back to the dogs that were originally imported from Tibet and Nepal.

The whole 'dratsab' thing is just the way he behaves sometimes. Him and Libby are killing one of my wooly hats as I type... 'darling' has just brough it to me in the hope I'll play tuggy with him.
