: So. Cal November playdate
: jabear October 20, 2005, 06:49:06 AM
I was thinking about the 2nd playdate the we are going to have in So. Cal and was wondering if anyone was interested in changing the venue?  I have to drive anywhere but love weekend get-aways so I don't mind.  ;) I know that there was talk about meeting in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo? What do you think? Would anyone be interested or do you want to stick to Hunington Beach?

We are so excited to have another big paws play date!  Sasha had so much fun last time!  I would like to throw out a vote for Santa Barbara--there is a great dog beach with tons of free parking and an off leash dog park too.   :D
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: ZooCrew October 20, 2005, 11:51:55 AM
I guess I don't mind wherever it is.  Although depending on how far away it is, I may or may not be able to go this time.  Business will start picking up come Nov., so the closer the better for me, only b/c I probably can get a few hours free, but not the whole day once you add in drive time.

I guess I would have to look on a map and see how far away Santa Barbara is (still not familiar with all these San towns).  It may be feasable, we'll have to see.
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Baileyboy October 21, 2005, 01:22:47 AM
I don't mind where we have it, I just want them all to get together again :)
I'll also throw in a vote for either the Santa Barbara dog beach or dog park.  Would be fun to try different places each time we get together.

Ok...so here is my thought. I wanna go everywhere and LOVE taking Bear with me on drives. Since it seems as though the majority want to keep the playdate in Hunington Beach then I think that is best. November 12 or 19?? I can't remember what we decided but either is great for us. As for other travels...I guess that Baileyboy and Jessdryden and I will be the crazy travelers.  ;D

So, who is in for the 12 or 19??
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Jessdryden October 26, 2005, 06:13:48 AM
We're up for that!  :) Both dates work for us, but I think the 11th is a holiday (and so might be a busier weekend).  What date works for everyone else?

I was talking to hubby about this last night and we are thinking maybe we can go! Our anniversary is on Nov 11th and we wanted to go somewhere anyway so maybe we can make a weekend trip out of it. I have some questions though. Is it an all day thing or just a couple hours? Will there be any skin kids there? Do we need to bring anything? Will it be cold? Are there any dog friendly hotels around there? And we've never been there so we will probably get lost! I looked it up on mapquest and it said it would take us 6 hours to drive there, but sometimes they are wrong. Do you really think it would take us that long? Thanks for any replies!
Steph

: newflvr October 27, 2005, 04:17:53 AM
Where are you coming from?  Check www.dogfriendl y.com for hotels in the area who take dogs.  If your skin kids love the big guys, they would be welcome, I think.  Last time we had mostly Newfs and Great Danes so they were B I G!!!

oh!!!  AND happy anniversary!!!! ;D

Thank you!
We are coming from Phx, AZ. The kids like big dogs as long as they don't jump on them! My dogs aren't as big as newfs and danes yet but they are getting there!

: newflvr October 27, 2005, 04:34:01 AM
Hmmmm.  Five to six hours sounds about right.  Sorry!  but it will be fun.   The Newfies and I had a GREAT time last time!!   I haven't figured out if I'm going to go yet since my youngest son arrives home from college this weekend:  his college got whalloped big time by the last hurricane and has closed for a couple of weeks for repairs.  I'm not sure when he's going back or what we're going to do while he's home.  Sort of unplanned vacation, I guess.  I also "get" to have jury duty so everything is up in the air!

If things settle down a bit, we'll be there!!!

Oh, none of the dogs, last time, jumped on anybody.  Ususally that's the first thing we all worry about with the  big guys.  Not many people want a 150+/- dog greeting them eye to eye!
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Stephanie October 27, 2005, 04:56:47 AM
Wow! Sounds like your gonna be busy. I hope things do settle down for you and you get to go.  :)
I think it would be fun.
How are the gas prices out there?

Oh, I hope you get to go!

Stephanie--I love looking a photos of your puppies!  It would be great to meet them (and you too!) :)

newflvr--I hope you all get to come too!  You are busy!  Sasha had so much fun playing with Chester and we loved Cowboy last time!  Hope to see you soon...

I hope you can both make it too. Mari- we love you, Chester and Cowboy so much! And Stephanie, we would love to meet you and your fur kids & skin kids too. Hope you can make it.  ;D
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: ZooCrew October 27, 2005, 10:06:04 AM
No opinion on the dates.

The only time I got selected for jury duty was right before we moved.  I got the summmons in the mail in Dec, and it was for Feb.  I got to get out of it b/c we were moving across the country in Jan.   ;D
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr October 27, 2005, 09:48:27 PM
Hmmmm.  Maybe I'm thinking of moving??

And, Cindy, I know what you mean! Last time I whined about having to serve, sat there for four days, got called up to sit on that special platform and then got dismissed!  AND MY FEELINGS WERE HURT!   How dumb is that?  It was like everybody got to go to the party but me! Sheesh!  Sometimes I can't believe how silly I can be!!!
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: jabear October 28, 2005, 03:44:33 AM
I was the same way Mari. I got to sit in the chair and everything and then they dismissed  me. So sad. I really wanted to be on an actual jury.

i am fine with the 12th or the 19th.  I love the Beach we were at, and the little cafe we went to after!!!! My little guy (only in comparison to this group) had a blast once bear stopped sitting on him!!!! ;D  I am sure he would love to have your little guys around too stephanie!!  can't wait to see you all again.  I have been bogged down at work and have had no desire to get back on the computer at home so i have been a little MIA lately.  really glad i got on at the right time to see this though!

There is an open invitation to everyone.  The get together will be November 19th at Huntington Beach.  Here is a link to the Dog Beach:  http://www.dogbeach.org/

Hope to see you and Cassi there.

If Mack and I bring the pack I don't think we will be doing the restaurant.  If I come with Tyra then I will try to join you all.  How's that for a definitive answer?
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 01, 2005, 04:35:53 PM
If it's reassuring at all, the restaurant is outside on picnic tables.  Last time, I think we had 10 giants with us...and it was SO much fun.  The whole pack would be fine, if you are comfortable with it!  We'd hate to leave anybody out!

: moosedog November 08, 2005, 03:25:03 AM
I hate to rain on everyone's parade regarding Huntington Beach, but I'd like to STRONGLY request we move this event to the Long Beach dog beach....

Here's why:  So far, in southern california, Orange County is by far leading the way with dog influenza cases (more than 100).  Next is Los Angeles with 4 cases in Inglewood which originated in Orange County (according to my vet who is also located in Inglewood).  Orange County is the only nearby county with confirmed kennel closures and one vet with 80+ reported cases.

So, Long Beach may be a little further North (about 15 miles) from Huntington, but it also isn't in the center of an area that is most likely to expose all our dogs.  I know there's no way to totally avoid possible exposure, especially at a public dog area, but why choose the highest risk area?

Just my two cents...
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: The Brindle Pack November 08, 2005, 09:57:40 AM
WOW....I had no idea it was that bad here in southern California.  For me I don't think the short distance between Huntington and Long Beach is enough to ease my mind.  I think we will have to cancel our plans to attend.  There is just no way I am willing to chance it.

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 08, 2005, 11:02:59 AM
Well, POOP!!!  I hate to think that we are all going to have to worry about this, but I guess we do.  Cowboy's breeder called me a couple of weeks ago and strongly suggested that I keep the dogs away from all places where dogs gather:  dog parks, dog shows, etc.  They could play with dogs that we knew but she thinks the risk is just too great.  Well, I know you guys, so we could try meeting where there aren't so many dogs.  There's a small dog park in San Pedro that is empty most of the time.  We could do that and have a picnic there.....

.....it's just a thought! :)
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: jabear November 08, 2005, 11:08:35 AM
I'm so sad now.   :( I was all excited about next weekend. Maybe we could do it in Santa Barbara then with the same doggies as last time??
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 08, 2005, 11:13:17 AM
I could do Santa Barbara another time but I have the entire family coming for dinner on the 19th (the pre-Thanksgiving festivities for all those who can't be here on Thanksgiving) so our visit was going to have to be short anyway.

It makes me so sad that we have to worry about our pups getting such bad diseases!!!  WELL, POOPY-PANTS!!!  (That's as far as I'm going with swear words!!!  :-X)
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: jabear November 08, 2005, 11:16:36 AM
I know....I'm so sad. Where exactly is San Pedro in relation to Hunington Beach Mari?
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 08, 2005, 11:20:02 AM
It's at the end of the Harbor Freeway (110);  probably 45 minutes north of Huntington Beach.  If you guys are at all interested, I'll go check it out.  I haven't been there for months just because I don't take Cowboy places where I have to worry about mean dogs picking on him.  (I know, I know!!! I'm an over protective mother!!!)
: Re: So. Cal November playdate

Okay...I'll go check it out today.  In the meantime, here's the website:
http://www.dogparks.org/default2.htm

The official name is Knoll Hill Dog Park in San Pedro.

Cowboy and Chester will LOVE doing the research!!! (and putting their smells down first!!!) ;)

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Kirsten November 08, 2005, 05:02:14 PM
 :(

I don't think the long beach dog beach would be good because it is just a small coned off section and we have big pups!!  Not nearly as nice.  And also, not far from huntington beach.  I still want to meet up if other people want to.  i hope we find a good option!  shakes, tom and i miss you guys!
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 08, 2005, 05:09:36 PM
Okay, the boys and I checked out the San Pedro site and it seems fine....clean, covered with wood chips and there is a seperate place for small dogs.  It's just off the Harbor Freeway.  It actually overlooks the LA Harbor and Chester and Cowboy had a great time romping with the 6 goldens who were there.    I do think we should do it earlier in the day, if we can, since dog parks can be rowdy later on a Saturday afternoon.  Just a thought.  There seemed to be a smallish park just across the street if we wanted to do a picnic...

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: moosedog November 10, 2005, 04:36:35 PM
I'm much more comfortable with Knoll Hill (San Pedro) than Huntington Dog Beach right now.  It's actually the closest dog park to my home.  Good suggestion!

I agree with an early meeting time -- before the weekend crowd hits.
The final date with the 19th right???? ???

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Baileyboy November 10, 2005, 04:46:21 PM
I just read all the updates on the playdate.  I went to the link Mari posted and noticed that on the 19th from 9am-1pm there is a Holiday Pet Fair.  http://www.dogparks.org/Pet%20Fair/PetFair.html

I'm not sure how large the park is, but it could get pretty crowded with the event going on.

What do you think?

sunday Nov 20?   :(   I have an obligation to run my church sound board that morning... couldn't make it to the park until at least noon.

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: ZooCrew November 11, 2005, 12:57:57 AM
Sunday for me would be iffy.  I also have church, and since it is a farther drive, I wouldn't be able to get there until much later......... ...like 2 ish?  But don't change plans just for me.  Unless I can get my friends to drive again, I'm not big on driving thu LA.  But we'll see.

How about Santa Barbara (Hendry's beach) on Saturday?  Any takers?  I'm so bummed we can't have a huge doggie get together this time. :(  We'll have to do it again soon!
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Baileyboy November 12, 2005, 11:32:14 AM
I'm sad too, it was so much fun last time.
I could do Saturday in Santa Barbara if that works for some people.

: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 12, 2005, 12:16:18 PM
Where is Hendry's beach?  Is that the one by Summerland?  How busy is it (considering dog flu)?

There is a horse corral next to our house in Palos Verdes, I could see if our neighbor would let us borrow it for a few hours (providing she hasn't moved her horse in it... ;D)  It's not huge, but it would keep the dogs contained and it would just be us!
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: jabear November 12, 2005, 01:56:55 PM
I'm in for Saturday in Santa Barbara. Saturdays work much ,much better for us. And of course, if there a beach that makes it even better.  ;D
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: Jessdryden November 12, 2005, 08:07:15 PM
Hendry's is actually in Santa Barbara (about 10 min from downtown).  There is always a cluster of 5 or so dogs right at the entry, but then it spreads out.  We haven't heard anything about canine influenza in this area.  The beach area is pretty big, so we could probably have an area mostly to ourselves.  There is also a huge off leash dog park nearby (Elings park).  We could go there and basically just be us if the beach seems too risky.

The corral also seems like it might work out--any horses yet??
: Re: So. Cal November playdate
: newflvr November 12, 2005, 08:26:11 PM
I don't know.  I'm at the cabin in Northern Calif. and will go home on Wednesday....I can check then.  The good thing is that our city doesn't have lease laws so we can take a walk on the horse trails.

Santa Barbara sounds good too......

Why not each pup pick all locations that are ok. The ones with the most votes is IT. If not enough ( at least 5 or 6) want any one place, then cancel 'til next time.
