: OMG! This is so sad:(
: Kiahpyr October 25, 2005, 09:31:17 PM
I got this information from another pyr group that I'm with. This makes me so sad. These people tried to help the dogs of Katrina. I'm so mad that people could do this.

This about Tammy Hanson's "sanctuary" in Arkansas where she houses more than 500 dogs on a two-acre plot of ground. Here's some pictures http://www.mhpets.com/hanson/. Beware not for the weak.
Here's more information http://www.forpitssake.org/ednah.html

OMG that is just awful!  The poor little things.  Just last night, the news had a segment on a bunch of Katrina rescue dogs who developed the dog-flu and had to be sent to the bridge.  Just makes me want to cry.   :'(

I got the same email in my Pyr-list as well. It is just aweful, there was a girl there trying to get all the dogs out. They are calling the humane society to help and they are also accepting donations too. It is just so horrible that this women could so this. Haven't these animals been through enough! The one good thing is that she has been caught and people are getting these animals out of that H&%L hole, and she is being charged with animal cruelty.(sp?)

Oh I wonder if we should contact some rescues to see if they could pick up some of these animals? I know there are some Pyrs but there is also some pitts and I am not sure what other breeds but I an sure they would help. Here in edmonton the humane society went down and picked up some animals and they are in foster care until there owners claim them, if not they will be adopted out. So I can see if they are willing to help out again?

I don't understand what the EDNAH person was hoping to gain from this? Did they get overwhelmed and couldn't take care of them all? Did the get sick and didn't ask from help?  I see where they have fence panels like they were going to make kennels, but looks like they didn't get around to it.  Why would she take on so many dogs? Obsessive hoarding disorder?

I received that same info on a Doberman group I belong to ... the message I received stated that several organizations were raising money for Hanson's defense.  Can you believe it?  They said there were over 500 dogs there and one had chewed its on feet off because it was so hungry.

From what I've heard, there are a TON of Pitts and Rotties.  I'm sure the story is making its way though the internet, but contacting some rescues might not hurt.

I can't believe that people would try and raise money for this person's defense! some of the animals died in these cages because of this women! This person makes me sick! Ok I have to stop now before I go on and well it won't be good. What is important now is helping these animals.

i just read this last nite... what i don't understand is... why'd someone VOLUNTARILY do this? there's no money involved in fostering 100+ pets is there? i mean... why'd this woman want to keep 100 pits? i don't see the logic behind her actions... does she actually think she's helping the dogs?

Some may not like my thoughts on this but....Did this woman really know what she was getting into?? Maybe, JUST MAYBE she got in over her head. Im wondering if there were any other places for these dogs to go?? Were there other rescue groups that could have handled this many dogs? Did she take donations and not use them for the dogs?? There seems to be food laying around all over the place in the pictures.Im just wondering if she started out trying to help but couldnt keep up. This is the first Ive read about this story so I dont have all the info. I just cant believe that anyone would intentionally do this to an animal. There is always 2 sides to every story. There has been so many disasters and people just arent prepared. Most are doing the best they know how.

There may be no money from the H.S. or the ASPCA, but that doesn't stop her from trying to solicit donations from poor unsuspecting people.  She probably hoped to gain profit off the disaster by taking in these animals and then begging for money which so obviously would NOT go to these poor animals.

I just spent the last 20 minutes crying my eyes out over this.  I have never seen anything so horrible in my life.  I've seen animal abuse before, but not at this magnitude.  All I could think was what those poor dogs must have felt like laying in a cage day after day in their own feces and urine, starving for food, water and attention.  Left out in the heat of the day and the cold of the night.  No toys, no soft bed.  No one to love them.  What animal deserves that?  Maybe they should lock her and her husband in a tiny little cage and let them go all over themselves and not feed them half the time.  People like that don't think of dogs as a living breathing thing.  They think of them as a comodity.(sp?)  IMHO if it isn't good enough for me, it isn't good enough for my dogs. :'(

That's what I'm wondering, like did she or her husband maybe get sick, or just couldn't keep up... They were responsible for the pups and should have asked for help if they couldn't handle it, but it makes me wonder why? what went wrong?

That is so F'd up......    This is the kind of stuff that always happens.  Poor animals!  The world is such a messed up place at times and animals always seem to be the ones to suffer first.  I'm going to go home and hug Drake extra hard.   :'(

Jen
I feel so awfull for all these animals. I know some people do not care and would do this without batting an eye, but when there is a disaster such as Hurricane Katrina maybe there were no other alternatives. How could we help to make sure that when something happens there is a back up plan for all of the animals who are abandon. I understand that many places have no real plans for the humans of these disasters, what about the animals?? We are fairly safe here in Ontario so maybe Im way off on my way of thinking and I am by no means saying that what these people did was right I am just trying to get around the reason for this. I can give money to help but I wish there were a way to make sure that this kind of thing can be avoided in the future.

Maybe she got in over her head, but why then did she request more rescues?  You don't just acquire 500 dogs over night.  And yet she was waiting on a shipment of 50 more from a pitbull rescue.  She put up signs after Katrina welcoming rescues in.  Her property looks like it has been that way for a long time.  I don't think the conditions were caused by taking in rescues after Katrina.  I think they've been like that for a long time.  She had numerous complaints about her even before Katrina.  Maybe she started off with good intentions, or maybe she didn't.  Either way, she should have been checked out a long time ago.  Rescues are supposed to have home visits just like fosters and adopters.  Why was she never investigated before now?  Maybe I'm just a jaded person.  But I think there's a lot more to this than we'll ever know.

Thanks Lil Now its making a bit more sence. If she was already doing this before then she should pay. I was getting a bit frustrated and couldnt find much info to tell me more about this lady. I hope these dogs are being taken care of now. I wish I could help more.

well I emailed my local humane society, they took in some animals from the hurricane, I don't know if they can do anything now, but you never know unless you ask right? and I will start and email campaign to see if some other rescue places can take in these animals as it is going to be a task to get 400+ animals placed. I can't sit here and do nothing and if emailing helps to get the word out I will do it  ;D

I just read one of those links earlier this morning on another web group.  I was appalled by what I read and saw.

I cannot believe that organizations didn't check out this womans rescue before sending her dogs.  Were they THAT desperate, they would just send them to anyone?
