: Hello from England
: Senghe October 27, 2005, 07:24:42 AM
Hi Everybody

Just discovered big Paws Only and thought I'd introduce myself (Sharon) and my boy Flynn. We live in England, although Flynn was born in Ireland.

Flynn, by the way, despite his heritage and his name is actually a Tibetan Mastiff. He is 10 months old and a huge pain in the a** to my poor old Shar-Pei Tinkerbell - she's nearly 11 and blind, but still gives him what for if he gets out of hand.

Any more Tibetan Mastiff owners here?

Hello and welcome, Sharon, Flynn and Tinkerbell!  I have two Newfs, Cowboy, three years old and Chester who is 8 months and a ball of energy!  Where are you from in England?  We just had house guests last week from Lemington Spa so I am still speaking "English".

Look forward to hearing stories about your pack!

Hello and welcome.

My name is Chris, and I have a husky/shep mix Keiko, and a great dane pup Gunther.

I'd love to see more pics of Flynn and Tinkerbell.  And tell us more about the Tibetan Mastiff.  I know a little about them, but I always like to hear personal experiences, since alot of dogs don't go "by the book"

HI! I'm Jeanne from Louisiana. Flynn is beautiful. I'd love to see a picture of Tinkerbell, too. I have and australian shepherd, an australian cattle dog, a collie/golden retriever mix a beagle and an ACD mix, as well as several other dogs that pass briefly through these doors looking for new homes. I try to always take in the big ones.

Can't wait to hear more about your doggies in England!

Your boy is so handsome. It's the good Irish heritage.

Hi Everybody

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll try to post a little more as I've been busy this week.

For the person who asked, I live near Manchester.

Here's a photo of Tinkerbell with Flynn. She's going to be 11 in December. Sadly, I lost her daughter Phoebe in March to kidney failure. Here's a photo of Phoebe - she's actually a full pedigree despite the long coat and they are known as 'bearcoats'. They appear occasionally in normal litters and I must admit that I like the bears the best!

Great pics.  Huh, you don't see long haired shar peis very often, do you.  They probably don't have as many skin problems, though, or do they?

I do know a couple of bearcoats with skin problems, but they seems slightly less prone to it than the two other coat types. The very short prickly 'horsecoats' seem the worst affected and the brushcoats not so much. Skin problems in shar-pei are something the reputable breeders have been working on eradicating and they are much better than a few years ago.

The bears don't turn up that often and I only know so many because Phoebe had her own website and I get mail from other bearcoat owners all over the world.

I have only heard of them.  I never knew there were three coat types.  I have only heard of the two.  I know of the prickly horsecoat, but what is a brushcoat?  Just a flat coat?  In between lenth?

Hi Sharon,

Nice to see another person from the UK. I'm Andy, married to Liz, and currently the servant of our two Newfies, Bell & Hovis. We live near Settle in the Yorkshire Dales. Incidentally I'll be down your neck of the woods in 10 hours time, At Bolton New Years Day Dog Show. We don't win anything its just that Bell and Hovis like to hang round with other Newfs :)

Happy New Year,

Andy, Bell and Hovis

Molly, please be careful giving your e-mail address out on a public forum - there are some very strange people out there who definitely mean harm. Not suggesting any of our regular members are anything like that, but anybody could be reading this forum.

Please feel free to ask any questions - if you have a lot, maybe start a new thread and I'll answer them the best I can.

Ooh - just noticed how many questions I've missed!

Zoo Crew - if you look at Tinkerbell's photo further up the list, she was a brushcoat and they are the most common now. Prickly but not so much as the horsecoats.

marinafb - I'm near Manchester which is quite a way from Oxford.  I have a friend with 2 brindle mastiffs and about 8 mad Siberian Huskies! She's had mastiffs for about 20 years and they are really nice dogs.

nostaw - Hi Andy, Liz & doggies. Are you going to Crufts? I'm going on the Thursday to see my Flynn's dad and siblings - can't wait! I hope to qualify Flynn this year but I can't take this showing lark too seriously! I keep missing the entry deadlines anyway.

And sorry if I've missed anybody.
