I just placed an order for the following books:
The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Showing Your Dog
The Complete Book of Dog Breeding
Show Me, A Dog Showing Primer
Raising a Champion: A Beginner's Guide to Showing Dogs
I also have a lot of other general dog tranning books and Great Pyreness books. What dog books have you read that are a must have?

Yes, I second Four Paws, Five Directions. Love that book!
I read a good one recently by some British authors, it's called Essential Care for Dogs, A Holistic Way of Life. It's an easy read and I really liked it. By Jackie Drakeford and Mark Elliot. And it's got lots of really cute pictures of Irish Wolfhound-looking dogs. ;D
Also I have several dog breed encyclopedias that I would die without. But I still need more. I really really really want The Dog Bible. :)

"Amazing Gracie" by the guy from Three Dog Bakery...

I second 'Amazing Gracie' (Dan Dye & Mark Beckloff) - totally awesome book and a fast read. Beware, you'll shed a few tears (good ones) before it's over. Another that I have enjoyed and returned to frequently is 'The Dog Listener' by Jan Fennell. it's written in a straightforwar d manner with good illustrative examples that can be related to issues that we face. It's also a great book for those of us with multiple dogs. She writes a lot about pack behavior and how to both deal with it and use it to your advantage.

(If Dogs Prayers Were Answered) Bones Would Rain From the Sky
by Suzanne Clothier
Athough there are a few training tips, this is more about a philosophy of training, a way of seeing things in terms of the relationship between you and your dog. An excellent read, and it may change your perspective.

Seriously people, it is what you call a "must read" and you really mean it. I haven't even finished it yet and it has changed me already in the way I look at my dogs. I thought I had a really deep connection with my dogs. I have cried several times already reading this book just realizing that I need to work on my relationships with my dogs. I am learning a LOT.
It's hard to explain why it's different from other dog books I've read but this one is going to have me thinking for a long time. :)

I have a couple I want to read, but my fav {not about dog training or anything} is "Lad: A Dog" I don't know who it's by, but it's really really good!

Albert Payson Terhune wrote this series about collies...I read them all as a kid....and cried!

"In the Company of Newfies" by Rhoda Lerman is a wonderful book about a year in the life of a Newf lover/breeder (She's Cowboy's breeder....fas cinating woman!!!) It is great for any dog lover, not just Newfoundlands, but is especially good for those of us who are nuts about our giant furshedding-droolingmachines!!

I usually pick up dog books from second hand and charity shops etc... for a couple of quid. I've had some absolutely fascinating books that way.
One of the best is the autobiography of Buster Lloys Jones "The Animals Came In One By One". He was one of the first vets in England who took a holistic approach to animal treatment. I think it's well out of print by now. Another bargain I picked up was Tomu Of Tibet which has stories and photos of the author's experiences with the Tibetan dog breeds - great for me as anything referring to Tibetan Mastiffs is thin on the ground.
I read the Jan Fennel book but must admit I can't take to her - mind you, the thing I have learned about canine psychology from owning chows, shar-pei and a TM is that you might as well just get a blank book and write in your own stuff as you go along - he-he!

I love the book Amazing Gracie. So touching.
I'm big into breed encyclopedias, and have several. My fav is The Dog Encyclopedia by Esther JJ Verhoef-Verhallen. I also want to get the Dog Bible.
I also love any book by Jim Kjelgaard. Most of his are dog stories, such as Big Red, Irish Red, Desert Dog, Stormy, etc.

Ninety-nine Newfies! What a fun book! I know it is about Newfies but, the short stories are wonderful! A great fast read for al dog lovers. The author is Pat Seawell.
