Cowboy started throwing up at 9:00pm last night and continued until I got so worried that I ran him down to the ER at 2:00am. By then he was throwing up bile and blood.....poor, POOR guy!! After he had an xray, they've ruled out bloat and pretty much decided it's gastroenteriti s and the start of pancreatitis. Since he'd tossed all his antiseizure meds out as well, I was worried that he could start to seize on top of it all. I was with him until 4:00 and was stable with the catheter, fluid and the anti-nausea drug. I have NO idea what he could have gotten into.....unles s it was the bully stick I gave he and Chester yesterday while I decorated the tree. Have you guys ever had that? I got it from his from the raw food store, so I would assume it was a domestic one...
.....and Chester is a wreck! He want's his buddy home!
Thoughts and prayers, please!!
-
Oh NO! Sending good thoughts and prayers your way for Chester.
Jeanne

Best wishes for Cowboy's speedy recovery. I hope he is home soon!

Aw, Mari! Dang! Just when you think everything is getting so much better...well, don't worry. He will get better and make it through this. And how awesome that he remained stable even though he yakked up his seizure meds?! That's great! Don't worry, he's gonna pull through for his mama and his best friend Chester! I'm thinkin' mucho positive thoughts for you guys here, Mari!
COWBOY COWBOY HE'S OUR MAN, IF HE CAN'T DO IT, NO ONE CAN!!!!
GOOOOOO COWBOY!
Is it possible to bring Chester to see him? It might help him..dunno...j ust a thought.
Please keep us posted, and remember that you guys all have the strength to get through this...
-
Oh no! We're sending good thoughts your way! I hope Cowboy gets better very soon!
-
Hang in there!! Me and my gang are sending healing thoughts and energy! Cowboy, be strong! Chester, you be strong too!!!
-
Oh no, Marsi!
I am so sorry to hear Cowboy was ill. Will keep all of you in thoughts and prayers today.
Stella
-
Thanks everybody!!! It's surprising how much it helps a worry-wart like myself to know you guys are out there cheering him on!
I just got off the phone with the ER to check up on him and it's very worrying!!! He's still vomiting and having explosive diarrahea. His internist is arriving now and so I expect I'll hear from her in the next hour or so. They were talking about doing an ultra sound this afternoon if he wasn't doing better, so that's what I'm assuming will happen next.
Will keep you all posted!!
.....and thanks!!!
-
I am so sorry that poor Cowboy is sick. Get well soon Cowboy, XOXO from us!
-
Is it possible to bring Chester to see him? It might help him..dunno...j ust a thought.
Thanks Nicole!! After I talk to the internist, I'll find out if it would be okay for Chester to visit. I don't think whatever it is is contagious, but since it's virtually impossible to find an unscarred vein on him, we take NO chances on him pulling his IV line out. It took over an hour to get it started last night and he's shaved like a poodle on both front legs. Chester is SOOOO sad, though. He's been sitting at the top of the driveway just watching for him....then coming in the house and howling like his heart's going to break! He just doesn't understand where I took his buddy!!! :'(
-

That has to be just killing you. Dixie can not stand it if Sugar Bear wants to stay outside and she is inside.

That breaks MY heart. Poor Chester :'(
-
Get better soon Cowboy!!
-
AW MARI! That is SO SAD! Poor Chester! I see what you're saying about the IV. Not worth the risk. Can you give Chester something that smells like Cowboy to make him less depressed?
I feel so bad for him! But, he'll have Cowboy home soon...let us know what the internist says...we're cheering and rooting for him! Have you talked to Rhoda?
-
So sorry to hear your boy is sick. I always try to give some special attention the ones left at home. They know when somethings wrong. Hope everything is ok.
Carolyn
-
I just spoke to the internist and there's nothing good to report. He's having explosive diarrhea and it's all blood...plus the vomiting has continued on two anti-nausea medications. She's sent a stool sample up to UC Davis because there is yet another new dog disease that manifests as blooding vomiting and diarrhea..... :( He'll have an ultra sound late this afternoon to see if there is a partial blockage and they are keeping him on most of his antiseizures because of the risk of aspiration while vomiting and seizing at the same time. His main drug, though, is by mouth only and they can't risk giving it to him. SOOOO we're hoping that he just doesn't seize!!!!
I'm going to take Chester for a walk since we both need to get some fresh air.
Thanks for caring!!
-
Oh No!! I'm so sorry to hear about Cowboy. I hope they can figure out what it is soon, so they can start treating it right away.
And poor Chester to be missing his friend. Hopefully Cowboy will not have to be gone for too long.
-
Oh my goodness, my thoughts and prayers are with you (and Cowboy). Try to stay somewhat calm (I know it's easier said than done) but we're thinking of you and hoping for the best.
Poor fella! :-[
-
Oh NO!!! I'm so horribly worried with you! And this came on all of a sudden?? I can't even imagine what could be wrong, except it sounds just like parvo, but I'm sure he's been vaccinated and they've checked that already, right?
-
OMG!! I'm a nervous wreck for you!! I hope they can find out what's causing this QUICK so they can get to treating the problem!! And poor Chester not knowing where his buddy is! I'll keep you all in my thoughts! Hopefully you'll get some more news soon!
Andi

Oh Mari, I was so sad when I saw your posting.
We are thinking of you and sending our best thoughts to you and Cowboy.
Continue to keep us posted.
Susan
-
Get better soon Cowboy! I'm so sorry this has happened. We're thinking good thoughts and sending them to you. Hopefully they'll find out what's wrong and he can come home to you and Chester.
-
Oh, I am so sorry. Will keep you in my thoughts and I hope everything will turn out ok.
-
Yes, he is in a good place. This ER has taken care of him through his numerous seizures and are SO aware of how much he is loved. His internist had actually wanted to have him as flower dog at her wedding until the hotel got wind of it and put the kabosh on it. They love him almost as much as I do.
The problem is that there is just no cause at this point. After the ultrasound we'll know more....and, sad to say, I'm hoping for a partial blockage so he can just have surgery and get better. It's the not knowing that so awful....and because he is so immune compromised (epileptic dogs just are :() another dog could have something and not come down with it.
Chester's better after our walk. We're going to go to the store now....just keeping busy!!
Thanks guys....hugs back to all of you!!!
-
Oh Mari...Bear and I are keeping our fingers and paws crossed that everything turns out alright. I am so sad that Cowboy is in the hospital. I really hope that they find out what the problem is soon!
Big drooly (((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))) to you and Chester.
-
I'm so sorry to hear about Cowboy. Good Grief. You must be completely a total emotional wreck by now. How scary.
I'm thinking you, Cowboy and Chester. Hope they find out what is happening soon.
Luvmenewfs
-
Poor Cowboy. :( Crossing my fingers that the ultrasound shows something. I can't even imagine how scary this must be for you. Sending my prayers and get well wishes.
-
Lots of hugs, we are praying for Cowboy and your family.
-
Still here thinking about you guys, Mari! You're doing the right thing by keeping busy and keeping Chester busy. That will help you not dwell and freak out.
Cowboy is in good hands, and that is the best thing for him right now. We're all praying and thinking and loving Cowboy, Mari! Just stay positive!!!
-
I just spoke to his internist again and there's no improvement. The radiologist is due in at around 4:00pm and he's the first to go so hopefully we'll hear something by 5:00.
The new disease that he may have has had three major outbreaks: two in Southern Cali and one in Northern Cali and they (the docs at UC Davis) are frantically trying to figure out what it is, the cause and treatment. His fecal sample results should be back hopefully tomorrow. It is NOT an ulcer. The blood coming out in his stool would be black if it was from an ulcer, and his is fresh and bright red....but thanks for thinking of it...I did ask. It doesn't look like any form of cancer since it came on so fast....he literally was fine all day yesterday.
So....no more relevent news. But I do have to rant: WHY are we getting new dog diseases??? What are we doing wrong? How can we protect our pals if we don't know what's out there? He's up to date on all his vaccinations.. ..he was titred about 3 months ago....so this is a complete unknown.....
I'll up-date after the ultra sound.....
-
Oh I am so sorry to hear about Cowboy not feeling well. It is hard when our babies are sick. Very stressful when it takes so much time to figure out what is going on with them.
We are keeping you all in out thoughts and prayers.
Michelle
-
Oh no! :-\
I hope that they figure out what is wrong soon and Cowboy gets good as new. Zoey and I are crossinf our fingers and paws for a speedy recovery
-
Well wishes from Webster! Hope you hear some good news soon!
-
Just heard from his doc and here's the deal. His entire GI tract....top to bottom is COMPLETELY eroded. Gone...not there...that's why he's bleeding. They've given him something (carapace, I think) to coat it so that hopefully the bleeding will stop but they have NO clue as to the cause. They are going to work on that tomorrow. They are thinking a parasite, or that new disease...but treating him for everything under the sun. Right now they are just trying to stop the bleeding so he can keep his antiseizure levels up. I'm have a vodka (medicinal only, of course...and then off to bed) This day has just been too much! I'll let you know what happens tomorrow...tom orrow!!!
Thanks you guys! It's been so cathartic to share with you: you understand that he's not 'just a dog'!!! I love you all!!!
-
Oh, GOD, Mari! Have as many vodkas as you need, honey. Sending massive positive thoughts your way.
-
OMG Mari! I am so sorry, I wish there was something I could say or do.
-
Sending you positive thoughts and prayers your way. I am so sorry you have to go through this.
Michelle
-
Mari, I am so, so sorry. I started crying when I saw your last post...
I'll be praying for you and for Cowboy {Chester too...}
And dogs aren't just "dogs"... they truly are part of the family
All our love,
--Samson and Cooper
-
Oh Mari, I feel for you hon...
Sending lots of prayers and wet-nose doggie snugs your way. Poor Cowboy. Poor Chester too.
It is so hard when our babies get sick, I know how you feel. Try to stay positive and know that all your BPO friends are thinking of you of hoping for the best! ;)
Kelly
-
Mari, I am so sorry to hear this. I am not a religious person, but I said a prayer for Cowboy tonight. I know how much he means to you, and I think everyone here loves him too. Please know that we are all sending massive good wishes his way...
-
Feeling maudlin here....here's a picture of Chester, Cowboy and Bear, I think, at our BPO meet and greet last fall. Look at how he's just different. He's trying to be okay, and he's just.....diffe rent!!
-
Oh no. We're sending lots of good thoughts and prayers your way.
-
Thanks, Jess, it means so much!!!
-
Aw, Mari! That is such a cute picture! He's such a lovey baby!
-
Oh no!! How horrible & scary for you! :'( I'll keep y'all in my prayers. Did they check for Parvo? If he's immune compromised from the seizure meds, his vaccines may not have "taken" - in other words, are not giving him full protection.... ..also - did they check all the side effects of the seizure meds? Could one of them have done this? Hope the Carafate helps coat the lining & gives him some relief - also hope the lining can grow back!
Sending prayers your way!!
-LaurieW

I'm so sorry that you're going through this with Cowboy. :(
We're sending lots of thoughts, prayers and hugs to both of you. Our furbabies are special to us and our special needs babies are even closer after all the extra care they need. We'll be thinking of you!
*sending lots of postive vibes your way*

Oh Mari! I am so sad for you and your family. We'll definitely keep you in our prayers and hearts. I really hope that they can fix your baby and that you can bring him home soon.
-
Ohhhhh Mari I am sooo sooo sorry to hear about Cowboy. I cant even imagine having to go though everything you have had to go though with him. I logged on and started reading your post while removing makeup, it is gone from one eye and the other is a total mess from crying. If it is any help at all, you know I am thinking of you, your family and all your doggy kids.
Give them big hugs and kisses and big hugs to you too

You guys are all the VERY best!!! Thanks SO much for caring!!! I just got off the phone with the ER to see how his night was and YEA! He hasn't vomited at all!!! YIPPEEE!!! but.....he still has the d*mn bloody diarrhea every couple of hours. AND he hasn't seized!!! So I think there is some real improvement! I'm going to spend some time with him today and hopefully some labs will come back and tell us something about the what started this. I really don't think it's his seizure meds, since the only one that could cause damage is the phenobarbital and he's almost weaned off it (he's gone from 2 1/2 grains twice a day to 1/4 grain twice a day). I'll certainly ask about the parvo, but his titre a couple of months ago said everything was at acceptable levels.
Trust me....he'll never have another bully stick. His doc said that those could be deadlly for a guy as fragile as Cowboy. And no more raw bones....becau se of the possibility of parasites in the marrow. Poor guy. All his favorite favorites....b anned! I think the lining can rebuild...isn't that how Nexium works? He's probably on a doggy verision of Nexium.
Again, thank SOO for being there. It's so great to know I'm not the only one who loves my dogs as though they are full-blown, card-carrying family members!
-
I'm glad he's getting better. He's a strong boy. We're sending happy thoughts to Cowboy and his family. Get well soon!!
-
Glad to hear he is doing better. Get well soon Cowboy. Big hugs to Chester too.
-
I am glad that he is doing better. I'm sure that he'll be back home in no time. ;D Still sending prayers your way ;D
Nina
-
Mari,
Sounds good! Any little bit of positive news helps! That's great that he hasn't vomited or seized! WOOOOH COWBOY! YOU'RE SUCH A STRONG BOY FOR MOMMY AND BABY BROTHER CHESTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You make your family carry cards? Weird... ;)
Keep us posted, Mari. I thought about you guys all night!
-
Really glad to hear at least there is some good news for a change. Cowboy is definetly in mine & Melissa's thoughts. Give that boy a hug for us when you see him ;)
-
YAY! I was happy to read that this morning! :D
We're still pulling for you Cowboy!
"You can do it!"
-
Mari,
So glad to hear the update. I keep thinking about both of you and have to check in constantly to see if there is an update. Was so happy to see that he's doing better this morning.
Still sending my positive thoughts and prayers....
Susan
-
Oh yay! We're still sending good thoughts and prayers, but I'm so glad to hear this good news! :)
-
You make your family carry cards? Weird... Wink
Yeah, it's a huge family if you add all the four legged ones....feline and canine and human and semi human!!! Gotta show your card at the door if you wanna come in!!! ::)
-
You and your dog are in my thoughts....I am praying for a full recovery
-
I'm so happy to hear Cowboy is doing better. I'm sure he'll perk up even more at the sight of you. I am anxious to hear what they can do to repair the damage and what may have caused it. Poor (not so) little guy! Sending big HUGS his way.
Jeanne
-
Mari - So glad to hear that we have some good news this morning. Still keeping those good thoughts coming your way, though!
-
praying for a quick recovery for Cowboy. This new has made my day much better, give Cowboy a hug from us when you go see him.
-
I am so sorry your family is going through this but was VERY glad to see that he is improving. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all through this hard time. All the symptoms (besides seizures) are the same symptoms as my Tonka (my great dane I just had to let go) had. I wonder if he had the same problem with his GI tract and they never thought to check that. I guess I will never know. But hope for the best for all of you. ***hugs*** and prayers for your family
-
Yeah for Cowboy! I'm so glad that he is doing better today. I'm sure some TLC from his momma will do him some good too. ;) We'll keep sending prayers your way.
And thanks for posting that pics of Bear with your boys. They all look so fabulous!
-
Thanks for checking in with us so often, Mari. You know all Cowboy's Aunties are worried sick about the big guy! hehehhee! But, we're rootin' for him all the way and we KNOW he's going to recover just fine! And, when he does and he's home (and all better) we should all come to Cali and have a big fat party for him! hehehehhe! Or at least a virtual one...I'll bring the Gin and Tonic.... ;) And for Mari, some of the best Russian vodka...and for Cowboy, a Bullystick Smoothie, all nice and blended up so as not to cause any GI problems.... ;)
-
So glad to hear he is doing a bit better.
Here's to a fast recovery.
-
I was so busy yesterday I completely missed this thread. That's just terrifying, and you are doing SO well to even be able to update us. I'd be jelly on the floor of the vet's office. :'(
Have they tested him for H pylori bacteria, or any of the other related ones? That's the most common cause of GI erosion and ulcers in people, and IIRC I read somewhere that there are strains of similar bacterias that cause ulcers in cats; it's more rare in dogs, but it does happen. Just like people, sometimes animals are asymptomatic for a long time until some little thing just kicks it off.
I remember how bad my ulcers used to hurt, and they weren't ever to the point of bleeding. You're all in my prayers, especially Cowboy.
-
I am so glad to hear about Cowboy, and I sm sure Chester did a happy dance when you told him too.
Every sign in the right direction is a great news, and I agree with a lot of people here, it sounds like you have wonderful vets and a real good hospital there.
When you visit him tell him all his aunties and uncles and cousins are all pulling for him and sending all the best thoughts.
Big slobbers to him when you visit
Marit

We're in!!! ;D ;D ;D I just got home from loving on him and he is getting somewhat better. He hasn't vomited and although he still has diarrhea, it's the right color now and not just pure blood. The really yucky thing, though is while I was curled up on his bed with him, and his head was in my lap, diarrhea was flowing out his back end. He had no clue!!! This guys is fastidious and won't potty any place but home. Poor guy!!! His labs, so far, are negative on everything so, until something changes, he is assumed to have this new disease: yet unnamed.
Here's what they know about it so far: there are three main clusters, one in Northern Cali and two in Southern Cali. It started in the summer. They have NO idea the mode of transmission.. .but, oddly enough, there has never been a case of a second dog in a family getting the disease which sort of rules out a virus. Dogs who are raw fed have gotten it, cooked food, like Cowboy, and dogs who eat traditional dog food (kibble & canned) so food transmission has pretty much been ruled out. The treatment seems to be to give them carafate, prilosec, antibiotics and keep them alive until they can heal enough to revive. The secret is to get them to the vet fast enough to get treatment started before they bleed to death....and to an acute care facility who will moniter 24 hours a day. That's why ER vets are pretty much the only ones reporting it so far. It is very scary. His internist and I took him out for a short walk around their little bit of a lawn, and as you all know with the giants, he drew a crowd. A woman came up and wanted to pet him and Dr. Briggs stepped in front of him and said, 'no...he is very sick and must not be touched'. The woman persisted and said, 'but he looks fine'. Dr. Briggs handled it beautifully when she said to the woman,' if you love dogs, you don't want to pass this disease on.' The woman backed away FAST!
All Cowboy's labs have been forwarded to UC Davis and they are frantically trying to sort the whole thing out so yet again, Cowboy is my own personal laboratory animal. He's going to be monitored for quite a while!
Thanks for your love, hugs, crossed paws and all. I think that all this positive good stuff is what's pulling him through! He may get to come home on Thursday if he's a good boy and doesn't start vomiting again!!! ;D ;D So get the vodka on ice and book your tickets!!! Party in SO CAL on Friday!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
-
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOH, MARI! Sounds great! I'll tell all my profs that I need to postpone finals until the following week, I'm sure that when I tell them that Cowboy has been having bloody diarrhea, they'll understand! HA!
Seriously, that is such good news. I hope that they can figure out what it is! What a weird, scary thing! I don't know if it makes a dang bit of difference to anything, but Purdue University here in Indiana has one of the best vet schools in the country. They do TONS of research. It might be something you'd want to know about...a second opinion? Share research? I don't know. But I'm just throwing that out there!
Can't wait to see pics of Cowboy coming home! WOOH!
-
Oh, Mari, I am so so happy that he is improving! I hope that big boy makes it home on Thursday so that he can oversee the Friday party, LOL. Heck, I may even join you for a drink!
(More seriously, I always feel so emotionally involved whenever anything happens to any BPO members dog or family or whatever - but for some reason, this one really hit me hard. There is just something about Cowboy... I am SO glad he is feeling better.)
-
Horray! The baby boy is almost home. :) I'm so happy for you and Chester!
It is very unnerving to think that he got a new something which has yet to be named or fully identified. I really hope that they narrow it down though.
-
Yeah..he is on his way to recovery. Way to go Cowboy!!!!
-
yey for Cowboy, I hope this is the turn and he gets to come home on thursday. It is really really scary though, to hear about new that you dont know if and how your dog will get.
Still sending get well wishes and hugs and all our fingers and paws are crossed for a fast recovery.

Here's the morning report. He's doing better...sort of! NO VOMITING!! NO DIARRHEA!!!! YEA!!!!! but now his bladder is enlarged and they don't know why. I think it's because he only likes to pee at home and he's holding it. Anyway, he's going to get that checked out today when his doc comes in. I STILL THINK IT'S ALL GOOD NEWS!!! He's such a good boy!!! He also got a couple of tablespoons of ID and didn't like it very well (he's never had canned food and ID is particularly bland!) so I'm going to boil up a couple of chicken breasts for him this morning and run it down to him. I want him home!! He's got a party to get to!!! Friends to celebrate and thank for cheering him on!!!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
OH that sounds wonderful!! NO vomiting or diarrhea is a good thing!! Hopefully he can come home soon!! ;D
Andi

Now that I have a bit more time, the scoop is this: The entire ER clinic thought Cowboy was a goner. They've never seen anything like this. So here's the deal:
If your dog vomits for more than a couple of times.....take him in to be checked out.
That's all that saved Cowboy. Because he's epileptic, I was more worried about him going into seizures than about why he was vomiting. That, in retrospect was dumb....but it saved his life. He lost so much blood....that's why they didn't want me to come down on Monday. It was just too awful. Ebola anyone? They thought it was that bad. The carafate has sealed up his whole GI tract and now he can eat, take his seizure meds and recover. We'll be weeks, if not months on boiled chicken and rice...but I don't care. I've got him for a while more!
Be careful with this disease.....as far as we know it's only in California at this point but we all know how fast all this 'poopy pants' thing can spread. Here's the odd bit. According to all his labs, and they've done tests for EVERYTHING! he's completely healthy!!!! There's NOTHING wrong with him.
I call a big time, on line, party on THURSDAY!!!! HE'S COMING HOME!!!
-
I'm so glad he's going home!! I hope they can figure out what this is and give it a name.
I had a similar scare with Keiko a few years ago, although with her, the vomiting and diarrhea only lasted a day and a half.......... ...........by the time she got to the vet the next day (on the advice of the vet to wait overnight and try pepto), she had pretty much stopped. She was on antibiotics for a bit, but otherwise fine.
Do they know how or where Cowboy may have picked this up? I live in So Cal, so this concerns me a bit........... ...especially with both of mine having vet issues about every other month.
-
YEAH!! I am soo glad Cowboy is okay! I hope you get lots of big sloppy "feeling better" kisses! :D

NO idea. We've gone over everything. The only dog he really is around a lot is Chester. I cook all his foods so we know it's not food borne. I don't take him to dog parks because he is SO gentle that other dogs could hurt him. All garden supplies are locked away....and everything is dormant so nothing there. As I said before, I guess one of the indicators of this is that there doesn't seem to be any cause...and it comes on fast. I don't know where in So. Cal the clusters are, but as they find out more, I'll post it. Hopefully UC Davis will be able to figure it out!!
