: Do strangers label your dog as a breed that he/she isn't?
: my3dogs December 06, 2005, 01:06:39 PM
I've had strangers ask if Daisy is a.....
- lab
- lab/Dane
- lab/Weimaraner
- pitbull

And some people insist that she is the dog from Turner and Hooch.  Close...but not the right type of mastiff.

I explain that she is a Neapolitan Mastiff but that is often met with a blank stare so sometimes I don't bother.

How about you?
Do strangers label your dog as a breed that he/she isn't?

YES!  I always get choc lab for Farley ::)  Then when you say Vizsla they look like I am making the name up..lol I can relate to the blank stare.

Puck--not really. But I hate the "oh is that a Rockweiler "  ::)  lol

umm a lot of people think Maggie is a Rottweiler or Pit Bull. Marty my miniature dachshund is usually mistaken at Maggie's puppy. :P
: Re: Do strangers label your dog as a breed that he/she isn't?
: GR8DAME December 06, 2005, 01:19:51 PM
Absolutely.
When I had my red dobie people would ask if he was a chocolate lab and when I told them doberman they would jump back like he was going to eat them.
Merlin has been accused of being a mismarked overgrown dalmation and a holstien cow.
Strider is understandible, being a mixed breed, but he has been diagnosed as a wiemeriener and a greyhound.
It doesn't bother me when someone guesses wrong, but it really makes me mad when I tell them what they are and the people proceed to argue and tell me why I am wrong.

Weirdly, no.  I sometimes don't even think Ranger looks all that Saint Bernard mix-y, but everyone who comments on him always says "Oh, is he part Saint Bernard"?  Go figure...

Tenchi gets called dalmation, weimeraner and greyhound.. but has been mistaken for a goat on numerous occasions.   ::)

Mojo gets called a "Lassie Dog"  all the time.. or st bernard?  Must be the coloring? ? ?

Faust is a police dog of course.

And Zeo gets called dalmation or poodle cross???

Kida is pomeranian, papillon or chihuaha.  :P  The pap part i don't mind....  lol

I used to get asked if Darmok was a Rott/Pit cross. She is mistakenly called a "Rottwilder" by some of the local yokels because she is a big, wide butt! But the people around here that KNOW what she is say, "hey, nice Doverman!" ??? ;D

Cowboy is a dalmation???  a Holstein??  a Ford Explorer??? a mix...dalmatio n and ???

Yesterday, I took Chester for a long ramble near the beach and he was called a Lab-Newf mix but he was really too small to have much Newf in him  ::).  Boy, was he shocked when I told the guy he was 8 1/2 months old!!, a different sort of Irish Setter (yep!  Right on that one...very different ::))

I always just laugh because really, you don't see these guys very often and it's fun to hear what people think!  My favorite of all time was when I was walking our very vicious Akita who was  snow white and a woman proceeded to tell me how I should train my samoyed....and wanted to love on him.  Teddy was NOT a guy to let strangers touch him and he wanted to eat her on the spot.  Samoyeds are like that I guess ::)!

Often...
My girls have been called Red Weims many times (? no such thing), Lab mixes, Rhodesian , and Pits. Even had the AC ask if they were Pits or mixes of I guess anything with a red nose is a Pitbull nowadays.

Then when you tell them what they are they still have no clue so I say they are a hunting breed and leave it at that.

It doesn't happen so much anymore, as people in the area know me and my dogs.  But when we first moved here I had a kid state that Keiko was a coyote.  Whaaaa??!!  I get asked alot if she is part wolf.  I actualy have no idea what her other 1/2 is, but it's probably mostly shepherd, so I tell them probably not any wolf (I have actually met two supposed wolf crosses....... ..one wolf/husky/shep and one shep/wolf that look almost identical to her, but slightly bigger)  Most people can guess the husky right way........... ..they eye gives it away.  One person asked if she was part aussie.

When we got Gunther, and he was smaller, we got the usual pit, greyhound comments.   After he passed 8 months old, no one has been wrong since with guessing what he is.  I swear everyone I meet has either at one point had a great dane or bred great danes.  I never realized how popular they were.

i had a harli dane ( she died recently..sigh) and actually got into a fight with a guy who was a dalmation breeder and that my dog was a dalmation!I could not make him belive me she was a dane! i think he must be breeding the worlds uglist dals- heres a link to a pic of her -http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/4995105/
with the dane i have now -she gets called a hound mix all the time!the funnist thing i had said to me though was , i paint my dogs nails ( to desentitize them to nailtrimming ect) and had painted my danes nails bright orange- someone actually asked if danes nails came that color!!

Oh gosh, yes - happens to me all the time...

Lots of people think Kate is some sort of German Shepard cross (which I can understand with her coloring).  But then again - a lot of people look at me like I smoke crack when I tell them she's a Leonberger...

A WHAT?!

A Leonberger!

I get "Oooh, love, that's a big dog... I know he's part german shepherd, but what's he cross with?" My answer is, of course, he's cross with people thinking he's part german shepherd! He's been called a malamute, newfoundland, st bernard, 'burmese' mountain dog and "he's a pyrenean isn't he - he must be as my friend has a white one just like him".

I would be surprised if anybody actually knew what he was first off outside being at a dog show. I'm used to it after many years with shar-pei. I've heard it all from people with the shar-pei. The three gems being what a nice Neapolitan puppy I have, that she's going to be a big dog when she grows up (Tinker was 8 yers old at the time) and "are they male and female, like a lion and lioness" when I was out with Tinker and her daughter Phoebe who was a bearcoat and did look strikingly like a small lion.

A lot of people have asked if Drake was a Portuguese Water Dog, which was somewhat understandable when he was a puppy, but now?  Uhhh, no.   We've also gotten Bernese or "Burmese" as so many people call them, Great Pyr, and St. Bernard.  All of those are close, so I can't blame them for trying.

We have so much fun with these two! Luke is always mistaken for a "golden" when he is really a samoyed/pit/shepherd mix. Daisy is mistaken for a cattle dog or basenji.  When I tell them they're brother and sister, they just say "huh?"
At this point I don't even know....but Luke keeps growing. He's bigger than mom and dad at six months!!  :D

I get the Lab comment sometimes and sometimes people just look at them funny and say "gee, they look sooo much like danes but they're the wrong color"!  heehee.  Then I get the "holy cow! What is that!!?"...  Fortunately, I've never gotten the pit comments, probably because they are so popular around here and everyone and thier mother has one.

Oh yeah...I always get asked if Ranger is a Saint Bernard or "What kind of Rotti mix is he?" or "He's a Saint Bernard/Rotti mix, right?"  I don't get too mad, b/c Swissys are pretty rare around these parts, and in general, and there are hints of Saint and Rotti way back in the line way, way back in the day...so, I guess they are sorta right.... :D

Rocco gets called a 'huge black lab', occasionally someone will guess Rott (he is a Rott/Newf) mix but they usually follow up with why doesn't have markings and he still has a tail.  Rocco has only been identified as part Newf by a Newf owner who we used to walk in the park with.

Maia, when a puppy, was called a pitbull, a kid called her a striped lab, and now people know she is mastiff but most assume bull mastiff because she is smaller and stocker than most OEM, I guess.

When Tyra was a puppy people called her a greyhound.  Until last week I had not heard it for months, then this guy at the farmers market came up to us and said "that is the biggest greyhound I have ever seen".  Yes she is skinny but I don't think she looks anything like a greyhound.

Tucker our dane/lab mix gets called a pit all the time.  I even had a guy in PetSmart try to tell me that only pits are brindle colored.  My guess is that Tucker does have some pit in him but we don't talk about that because of the negative stance closed-minded people have taken.

When my red Dober-girl Tia was about 6 months old, she was out with me in her Service Dog In Training vest, and a little girl asked her mommy what kind of dog that was.  Mommy was irritated, aggitated, just a real b**ch and she told her daughter, "It's a greyhound. No come on!" Then grabbed the little girl by the arm and pulled her away.  I wish I'd had my Retriever with me that day, I would have sent her to grab mom by the arm and see how she likes it!   Bright Blessings to All  )O(

Oh yes! I've been asked if Indy is:

Most people want to pet him, and if he gets excited and starts talking, some people jump back as if they think he's angry. Other people hold out their hands, and when he goes to sniff it, they yank it back. Well, then, why did they hold it out? Stay away from him if you're so scared![/color]

YES!!  I get the "breed guessing" all the time!  My small mojo is a Maltese and yet he's been called a poodle, bichon, terrier, and a few others I can't think of at the moment.  He's a very poorly bred Maltese has kinky hairs so I can understand the confusion. lol

Koby on the other hand has been called a pony far to many times....ummm doesn't a "pony" have a mane?  DUH!  So he's been called a greyhound, mastiff, and the best one.....a doberman! ::)  I do want to add he has NEVER been called a wiemeraner, which is suprising to me.

I get it all the time.  Earnest is a Lab/Dane cross, I know for sure, I saw both his parents.  People tell me he can't be Lab because he's not black, and he can't be Dane because he's "speckled" (he's a merle).  So part of him at least has to be Aussie or Sheltie, because those are the only merles anyone can think of, despite the fact that he has NO FUR- not even a Lab coat, he has the slick Dane coat with an almost naked belly.  (And he's 150lbs!).  I don't mind so much when they ask if he's part Catahoula, at least his coloring and shape could suggest it- I just hate when they want to "correct" me when I tell them what he is.  Sometimes if I can sense the person asking already has an attitude I tell them he's a Lochbuie Lurcher imported from England and he cost me $5,000.  Boy, are they impressed- one lady said "Oh, yes, a friend of mine has one, yours is a fine example of the breed!!! LOL!
Phyfe is even worse, because I don't really know for sure, but as far as I know he's St. Bernard and OEM, that's what his orignal owners told the humane society he was, the people I got him from said Golden and Dane (NOT).  Some people (I guess ones who have never seen one) think he's Leonburger, they come up with all kinds of guesses.  My "pretend" breed for him is Cane Garouf- although he's big, he's not THAT big, but he does look surprisingly like an engraving from the middle ages...

Yep, my Dobe got labeled as a Great Dane too!  Just the other day someone asked me why I cropped my Great Dane's tail.  I tried to explain that Raven is a Doberman.  "Oh, is he a Doberman / Weimeriner mix?  Is that why he's grey?"  No- he's a blue Doberman.  "Wow! That must be rare!" No- it's just a genetic dilution, even black parents can have a blue baby.  But I thought it was quite a compliment to have him mistaken for a Great Dane!  You guys have come up with such clever "breeds", I'm considering calling Raven a Silver Bolshevik Hound!

Actually, more often than not, I have people say, "Wow, That Newf is kind of on the small side, isn't he?" hehehe! That makes me happy cuz I sometimes think that people think I'm dilusional when I tell them that Cabeza is part Newf. I honestly don't know, we got him at a year. But, he's so Newfish, I'm pretty sure that there's some in there.

I have honestly had people ask if he were a bear cub, too. In all seriousness. He does look like a bear, but, come on!

Alot of people say that he must be some sort of lab mix, which I guess could be true, but, its doubtful. He's got a purple tongue, a double coat, a little bit of jowls...I guess he does have webbed feet like a lab, but so do Newfs...

I also had someone ask if he were a Flat Coat once. That was pretty close. He does look like a stocky flat coat. Very stocky.

Now when Galahad is older and I guess his ears are more in proportion to his head lol, not so much. But when he was a wee little one, I was asked if he was a bloodhound, and at the 4 th of July Parade a woman said "ohhh I have never before seen a bloodhound - St. Bernard mix" I told her she still hadnt. That time my feelers were a little hurt  ;D ;)

With hera people usually just ask, she is some kind of mastiff isnt she?

I dont have much problems with Zeus, but at times I have people ask me what he is. One time some one told me he was mixed with Bloodhound cause of his jawls  ??? Now with Grey, its a different story. When he was a little puppy he is a pit bull. As he got a little bigger he was a dalmation. Then a little bit bigger he was a Greyhound. Now he is a Dane mix cause Danes dont come in that color. Or sometimes he is a really big Greyhound cause he is so thin. But there are those times where he gets called a Great Dane  :)

Yes, we heard it often when he was a puppy and all fluffy.  Bryce is a Newfoundland, but a woman with a group of tourists walking through the park (tours) stopped to let everyone know that I had a Chow.

When I politely corrected her she then told me my breeder was wrong and had accidently sold me a chow.  She knows what chows are because...of course ::) she used to show them and had champions.

Now most folks know what he is but I do get the occasional That is the most beautiful black pyrenese, was he specially bred? :-X

There are'nt many pyrs where I live so not many people know what Busa is.  I usually hear the whispers "Look at that St. Bernard" or "Look theres a Newfoundland" (sp?)
I just smile. Any time I tell people what he is they never know what I am talking about.
