>:( :o I just got back from the vet's office. A woman taking the dogs out to pee and checking the animals called to tell me my dog was stumbling loose in the back room.
She had tried to call the all the vets after checking Petra's tags and then checking Petra's card to see what procedure had been done on her. She found Petra's card out on the desk, but no notes were on it so she called me to ask me what she needed to do for Petra.
I asked her to wait there w/Petra and when I got there (the vet's office is 10 minutes away) there she was. Petra was awake, but not walking very well. She had excrement on her bottom and it looks like she had vomited on herself. I wiped her down as best I could and she let me.
OMGosh! Petra is alive!!! Could she have brain damage??? She's home with me right now and is sleeping. It looks like she's having a hard time breathing so I have my mom's oxygen machine on her nose and she's letting it be.
She drank some water when she got home and stumbled through the house to her cage. I put the oxygen on her and she's sleeping. She keeps looking up at me then putting her head down. OMGosh!!! She has made a moan sound once. Her heart is beating ok - not too fast and not too slow.
That vet's office is gonna hear it from me tomorrow. When that lady knew why Petra was there she wanted to try again to reach the vet and was spassing out but I said, "Absolutely NOT!" I told her to tell those vets they were incompetent! That woman was crying and I was crying and holding Petra.
What am I gonna do??? I'm afraid she's not gonna be alright and then I'm afraid period! What have they done to her??? I've never heard of this happening in real life.

She is drooling a lot right now and keeps drinking every time I put her water dish to her mouth. Her eyes are closing and rolling back in her head sometimes.
Could she be dying? Maybe she just wanted to come home to die.
I am so mad; so upset at those vets. If one of them had come in before I'd left, I'd have decked 'em.

I'm sorry this whole thing has happened to you two also you need to start asking alot of questions!!
An animal after being PTS is to be bagged and placed in the freezer ...unless the owner states the wanting of the body or the vet has a crematory on site.
Even IF she was not given the proper amount of euthanasia and was still alive when they said her heart had stopped.... how would she have gotten free of the rest?
I would take her ASAP to another vet and call a lawyer in the morning. Any way you look at this story it just does not add up!

I know that you want to hate those vets, and they did treat you in a very crappy manner...but I want you to know, as someone who worked in a Humane Society and had to euthanize animals, this has happened to me before. Its very rare, and its totally disturbing, but its happened. I don't know what to tell you to do now, because when it happened to me, I had to just give the animal a higher dose..Oh, I don't want to give you details...

I'll take her to another vet in a.m. and see what should be done - I don't want her to suffer, if she is. The ER vet is associated w/my vet, so not taking there!
This is tearing me up...what have I done?? Should have taken her to another vet as soon as that one didn't want to earlier!!!
Maybe they just gave her enough to make her sleep so they COULD give her to someone!!!! I will be taking someone to court for this if that is the case.

Well this is my thoughts of what went on! Find it hard to believe she would still be alive otherwise.
About vets not PTS dogs/cats who the owners have requested be..... Hate to say it but yes it does happen. When I worked as a vet tech they had hidden cages by the back door where they hid them to take out after dark. Not that I always disagreed with them doing so when it was litters of puppies or kittens.

Do you think she is suffering?? She's drinking, sleeping (she even snored a few times), and she's wagged her tail a few times when I'm talking to her. She is slobbering some when she drinks.

OMG!! I am speechless, I am soooo sorry you have to pile this on everything else you have gone through! If this was an intentional act I would find out how to report this vet and this inhumane and unethical act against you and Petra!

I just got off the phone with the vet at Purdue University. They have a 24 hour vet clinic. They are among the best in the country. Anyway, she told me that she feels very confident that they lied to you, and that Petra is coming out of a sedation. She feels that if they truly euthanized her, she would have been in the freezer. She said that if you were with her the entire time, and they listened to her heart and told you that it stopped, they were lying. She told me that you should call the police immediately. She said that there isn't anything they can do, but it is the first step to getting this reported and preventing it from having it happen to anyone else. She said that as soon as you can, get Petra to the vet. A vet that is NOT associated with the vet that did this. She said if there is one available, even if its far, it is worth it. Although, she feels pretty confident that they just sedated Petra and told you they euthanized her, so she's probably fine, just coming out of sedation. you are doing the right thing by giving her oxygen..probab ly not the water though.
She thinks that they probably wanted to keep Petra for breeding or for a pet or whatever, and is HIGHLY suspicious. If you want to, PM me your number and I'll call you and tell you more, or give you the number of the vet that I spoke to...

omg. i just don't know exactly how to respond to this post! jaime woke me up to tell me, and i didn't believe it until i saw it here....and now i am just in shock! I AM SO SORRY THEY HAVE PUT YOU THROUGH THIS! NO MATTER WHAT HAS ACTUALLY GONE ON, YOU HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH WAAYYYYY TOOOOO MUCH THIS WEEK, NOT TO MENTION POOR PETRA! IM SO SORRY!

I don't know what to say except I'm sorry for you having to deal with all this.
I agree that you should call the police so that they have some type of record of this and also have another unattached vet check her asap so that you have proof. If you have a camera or video camera, maybe also take some shots of Petra.
This is just a sick and horrendous thing for anyone to have to go through, and you especially after everything else. I'm so sorry.. Sending lots of hugs your way...

Sherry, I'm going to bed...but, I just want you to know that I feel awful for you. I know that this kind of thing happened to me before, but as I think about it, it was minutes after, not hours, and this all seems so fishy. It truly seems like this vet is a shady character.
All those things don't make this any less painful, however. Please don't feel guilty. The vet I talked to at Purdue told me to tell you that above all, you should feel as if you did the right thing. She said that she knows that it killed you, but that you did a very responsible thing by allowing Petra some peace and not making her issues someone else's problem. She was very impressed with your fortitude and your desire to not put Petra through some other kind of difficult or painful situation, and just give her peace. That being said, she feels as if you have been severely wronged, and Petra has been severely wronged. She wants you to do all the things that you can to get this guy reported, call the police, call the state vet licensing agency, write a letter to the newspaper...do n't let this jerk do this to another loving pet owner.
I hope that everything works out the way that it is meant to, Sherry. This is unbelieveable, and you've been through so much already. DO NOT FEEL GUILTY! You are a top-notch, impecable dog mom. You have an immense amount of love to give, and Petra knows it, no matter what.

Aaarrggh!! I cannot believe I am even reading this!! First the thread stating the vet already sent off her head for testing (which I can understand under certain circumstances) and then to find out she was never pts, therefore she was never sent in for testing.
This is inconceivable and totally illegal. This may sound a bit far fetched, but someone mentioned using her for research. When I was going to school, I worked breifly in the medical building. Filing some paperwork, I found out that certain humane societies are setting aside certain types of dogs for research/practice for medical students. Mostly practicing heart massage and using those electic paddles directly on the heart. Research was the first thing that came to my mind. I would hope to God that it's not the case.
Of course you did nothing wrong. You need to stop blaming yourself. I agree with everyone else. Please call the police. Report the vet to the licensing board. Please get Petra in to another vet to have her checked out. Besides the vet, his assistants are to blame as well. At least the ones that were directly involved with her and knew what she was there for. I am simply at a loss for words as to how this could happen, and I hope that everyone at fault will be severely reprimanded.

These vets need to be struck off. Everything about what they have put you and Petra through STINKS! If it hadn't been for the woman and their lack of notes, you'd have never found out about this and god only knows what they'd have put poor Petra through. And to be honest, the fact that there were no notes written up starts the alarm bells ringing. I bet you they'll try to cover it up too!
Please get her to an independent vet a.s.a.p. to verify if she has been given just sedation. Police, attorney - throw everything you can at them. Local newspapers, the lot. Also it might be worth having a look on Google to see if anybody else has gone through the same thing and what they have done or even for complaints about this same stupid vet.
I'm sure Petra is just fine and not suffering anything worse than feeling like she's had one beer too many.

OMG. Wow. This is such an incredible incident. I am so sorry this is happening. This IS NOT your fault at all.
I would be contacting a lawyer for sure. No one should have to be put through this, nor should any animal. Let the local authorities know etc. I would search around and see if what kind of experiences other people of had with those vets. Contact Better Business Bureau( that what it is in Canada- I don't know if it is the same in the US) to see if anyone has made complaints about the Vet business. Contact the papers, local tv etc once you find out what is really going on and what happened. ( You don't have to give your name)Expose them for what they really are. I bet there will be others come forward too.
I would take Petra to another vet and get blood work done to see what drugs she has been given etc. Then it would be documented for legal reason if need be( if you can lay charges or if it went to trial etc). That way you can verify that you had not given them consent to administer this drug to your dog.
Again, I am so sorry this happened. Please let us know how Petra does. Give her a big hug.

Holy Smokes! I don't know what to feel! Bad for her or good for her! I think that's a horrible thing to have happen ... I mean to see the dog you expected never to see again walking around ... knowing someine didn't follow your wishes. I would be stark raving mad at that vet's office.Â

I'm going to say this publicly even though I don't know for sure, I've got a sneaking suspicion...
I don't know the exact circumstances of Smohr and Petra. I've never met either one of them. However, after setting all of the dedicated, loving, passionate pet moms and dads of BPO into a frantic tail spin last night, Smohr simply disappeared. I PM'd her my number, and asked her to call me, as I had spoken with a very good vet regarding the situation. I also offered to call her at my expense, if she'd be interested in e-mailing or PMing me her number.
I recieved no response. Granted, she could be overcome with grief and anguish. If that is the case, I'm going to feel terrible for posting this. And of course, she truly doesn't owe us anything. However, I guess I feel that if all of this were true, and she BROUGHT it to us, dragged us through this, asked our opinions, shared her grief, etc., she could at least give a follow up or respond to my PM.
I'm just starting to feel a little suspicious, and you can all hate me for being the big cynic here. I wasn't...obviously. ..I called thet 24 hour emergency clinic at Purdue.
So, Smohr, if you're out there, please give some indication that I'm wrong. I'm concerned that I didn't hear back from you, although I admit if something happened to Cabeza I probably wouldn't be able to post updates constantly...

I can only assume that Sherry's not on here right now because she said she was going to take Petra to the vet ASAP in the morning, as the 24 hour vet is associated with the vet that she's been having the problems with. All I know is that if something happened to Nee, as much as I love you all, I wouldn't be able to give up to the minute updates, although most likely I'd call some of you and have you do it.

Yeah, c'mon,
her priorities right now aren't to make sure we are all up to date on what is happening. She has A LOT on her plate.
I can't believe what has happened to Petra. Poor poor girl. This is terrible. Smohr, I hope somehow some good comes of this, and I hope everyone eventually comes to a place of peace, and those inhumane vets are shut down.

Ok everyone....un til we hear from Smohr lets remain calm. :( I've pm'd her asking for her vet's info and am hoping to get it soon so that I can talk to the vet personally. The whole situation with Petra has tugged at our very core, so let's hope that we hear from her soon and are able to curb any suspicions. :-\

Sherry, when you check back with us, PLEASE go to HSUS.org and find your regional office. Call them IMMEDIATELY and let them know what happened. This situation needs to be investigated. They have put you and Petra through too much stress and who knows what effects a too-strong, but not fatal dose of anesthesia can do to Petra?
My thoughts will be with you all day.

I am totally floored...I read some of the posts about her going over the bridge....and the vet who wanted her....do you think possibly he had them give her enough to make it look like she had passed?????OMG it is horrific to even imagine, but people can do some incredibly wrong things! I hope she will be ok.

I never thought of that, but of course I wouldn't until you brought it up. I wanted her ashes. One of them would've gotten some out of their ash pit in a fireplace I suppose.
After I get my check back from this vet, I am planning an all out war on them. We don't have a BBB here in WV (state too small of population), but I did call the Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor's Office, the Chief of Police and the Governor's Office who referred me to a Consumer's Office. Gonna lie down now. Tired. Up all nite w/Petra and then to a vet.

I know that she is not my girl, but I feel that we all know her a little bit and feel like she is one of ours. And now this.... I am so sorry for you and your family. Thats a great idea for you guys to call someone about this. Im sure Sherry has been through enough and likely doesnt have the energy to do this for herself. This is so unbelievable . I have been on here more today than I have been for a long time. Keep us posted as to what you ladys find out.

They told me it was time for her booster shots and she had to be wormed!!! They are covering their behinds right now.
I told them I had posted to a website that I was going to have her put to sleep and several people had seen it and they said that was no proof of action.

Ok, if they want to play that game with you....how much do booster shots and worming cost then? Why did you have to pay $$$ amount, and why didn't they point out the overpayment at the time that you left? Why did they have to keep Petra "overnight" for a simple bout of of shots? Where is your signature autorizing them to sedate her for this "simple" procedure.
I dunno about the rest of y'all's Vets, but mine have a form that I have to sign before they will do any treatments to my crew.

Why would it matter what you had wrote on the check? Don't you get an itemized receipt (either printed or hand written) from your vet when you pay for services?
I usually do get an itemized bill that includes reminders and such.
But I have to admit that this past August when we had to let our cat go I did not leave my vet with a receipt. I signed a release before the procedure, I wrote a check to pay for the procedure, and after it was done my family and I left with tears in our eyes. I've used this vet for years and would never think that I would need a receipt for such a procedure.
Just my experience.

I have always gotten the print out before even going into the room with the animal...guess thats due to the fact I never "trust" any vet or other service provider for that matter to not turn around a month later and say I did not pay.

This whole situation is just simply crazy, I was telling my vet about it today as I had Shadow back in for shots, another check up and he said he has heard other vets at conventions etc talk about this type of thing. He said it is morally and ethically wrong. If you will lie about something as HUGE as euthanizing a loved companion what else will you do? I am truly so sorry for what you are going through.

I spoke to Nicki on the phone today, when she told me about this, I was glad I sat down, this is horrible, way way way illeagal and unethical.
I actually have heard of this before, a person who adopted a cat from MCR I worked as Case Manager for, had had a dog that happened to, that they had for a reason decided that they needed to put the dog to sleep. But didnt.
anyway this vet ended up, I am not quite sure for how long but I think for 6 months, loosing his license. I know I thought it sucked, becuause he should never have gotten it back at all.
He was also charged with attempting to steal the dog, and of course breaking a bunch of laws.
If I have understood this correct..... You sherry were in there with her, the vet said the heart had stopped and she was pts. Then call you to say the head was sent off. Sooooo there is not way in h.... that there can be a too small of a dose, first of all, a vet check and double check and check for a really long time that the heart has really stopped, no vet would ever give a dose that could be in the neighborhood or borderline to "just enough" they give enought to pts, a couple of dogs that size, just because they never ever want to be in a situation where the animal in fact is not pts.
Second, if the call and say the heas is sent off, did they by accident send another head???? Think not. This is all a scam, no way it can be a mistake, NO F...ING WAY.
It is not only unethical, it is highly illegal.
If they want to play the ugly game, I saw a post with good questions, like why in the world did she stay the night after a shot and worming, worming by the way is always done at home, they just give the meds for you to bring home. And why was she sedated so hard for shot???? AND all the vets I have ever been to would never sedate, do surgery or any other major without a release form that is how they cover their backs if anything should go wrong.
I know you have called the cops, you should make a formal complaint and have them come out or you go there and have it in writing, they need to investigate illegal actions. Second please call AVMA and the HSUS and file offical complaints, also AKC has legal support and people who can help you with going further with this, so will and can AVMA and HSUS.
You need to mop the floor with these vets. and I am sure a whole bunch of us will help you.

I agree with Marit completely.... .and if they did this to you they have most likely done this to others. And, just because one attorney won't take your case there are others that will. I wonder if there is a site for legal questions. All of us up in Minnesota are with you on this!!! Hugs just arent' enough for what you are going through.

I don't even know what to think about this. I am so sorry you have to go through this.
I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, and I'm new and don't know the whole story behind Petra. I'm probably what you would call a secular humanist—this isn't a religious or moral thing—but I can't help thinking there's a reason for it. I know that's probably silly.
Either way, I cannot believe the vet did that to you, and I would, by all means, report them to the BBB and vet licensing board/assoc. That is disturbing.
You and Petra are in my thoughts. You are very strong.
