: Another Pyr in need.
: DixieSugarBear December 15, 2005, 11:17:14 PM
cricket36580 and I are working on helping out this big boy who needs a home.  He was put in the drop box at the Summersdale, Al. shelter.  He is around 7-8 years with some broken teeth and skin issues.  I have e-mail Fl. pry rescue.  I hope to be able to go see him on Saturday or if not then the first of next week.  If anyone in the area knows of someone that may be able to offer him a forever home let me know.

I know his face looks like "please love me".  It looks as if he has had a very hard life.

Lisa
ohmigosh! Why would someone give up a beautiful dog like that!

and @ 7-8???  Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!! I hate that .. gave his whole life to someone , and they don't even have the decency to drop him off with some information about him.

All they know is that he was put in the box overnight, has a few broken teeth and a skin rash.  No tags or anything,  the poor boy does not even have a name.

I know, for some reason I keep thinking of him as "Saint Nick" and call him Nicky.

ok - I responded to the other post before I saw this one.  I'll put the word out to everyone I know.  Hopefully we can find the poor guy a home.  I just don't understand how someone can canhave a pup for 7+ years and then dump him in the overnight drop.  GRRRRRR.....

You guys are great, so much is being done for this boy.  "cricket" is at the shelter playing with him.  She thinks he is just great and doing just what a pyr does.  We have tons of e-mail out looking for him a great home.  We also have approval for him to be taken in by the Great Pyrenees Club of Americia Rescue.

Just got home from a morning of running errands and, of course, going to the shelter.  You guys don't know how close I came to just whisking him out of there today.  He was WONDERFUL in the yard and has been socialized with other dogs.  Man, I really wanted to but I had a cab full of goat and chicken feed...and I have a sick chicken so I knew I would have to spend time with Phyllis(the chicken).  Anyway, he's not in immediate danger but they would like to get him out of there as fast as possible.  So, Dixie and I are going to work on the immediate future and then try to arrange transport to Tampa if I can't find a home for him here.  Shhh...don't tell anyone but I may have found a home today....I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Now for the downside.  He's going to need "special" care for his skin.  he's pretty close to having a staph infection but I really think the irritation is food related.  Of course, he desperately needs grooming which might take care of some of the problems.  He's older, as ya'll know, and is missing some teeth.  And, that's all.  :)

ok, I am so doing the happy dance.  I will be on the phone as soon as they open back up on Monday.  Now this boy having a home for Christmas is the best gift in the world. I really was not feeling the Christmas spirit as much as I do most years, that is until now.  So my Christmas wish is that as many Big Paws as possible have a home on Christmas Day with a loving family.

Cricket, hope the chicken get to feeling better.  It made my day knowing he had someone to love on him a little.

Update:  He's getting out of jail today!!!!  Rescue is sending over the paperwork and I'm picking him up this afternoon.  I was going to be smart and not say anything until after the deed was done but...well, I've spent 2 sleepless nights over this animal and my gut is saying that he needs out NOW!  Ok, so maybe I'm being a little romantic and doing the rescue on a white charger with my armour all shiney...I can't help it.  The phone lines have been going nuts over this guy and I just can't stand it anymore.  Please keep your fingers crossed for us.  Bella is SO alpha with other dogs - comes from being "littermates" to a pit.  I am just hoping against hope that they can all get along - at least for a week.  He does have a foster home in Clearwater but the lady is going to be gone this week and is not available until next week after x-mas.  She's a groomer and vet tech so is going to be able to properly take care of him.  Keep your fingers crossed!!!

cricket36580, is this guys Christmas wish come true.  Sorry for the long phone calls, we just can't hang up when it is dog talk.  I just got the copy of his paperwork from the shelter and I will call you as soon as they recieve the forms from GP rescue.  This guys life is going to be so good when he is loved.

Thanks for your offer Tom, the three of us will have to keep in close touch over the next week till this guy has his forever home.

Guys you may want to kill me over this but I ask the shelter to let me know if they get in any Danes, Pyrs, Newf, Saints or other big paws.  It is a small shelter and the big guys do not have long when more room is needed.  It looks like we may just be starting a Southeast BPO rescue.  Goodhope we need you on board, when is the big move?  Please let me know if you would like to be on the contact list when a short term foster placement is need or just some help with e-mails, calls, and transport.

Overnight drop off?
Is that a fenced area to drop off animals?
Like returning a video to the rental place?

At this point, it is planned for early February, although the date has been moved back several times.  Originially, we would have already been moved.  ::)

Mother said she would like being on a contact list after we move, but we couldn't foster for a little bit.  It will take about a month to unpack and get our animals settled in.

It's a kennel type box to put them in.  Make me want to hurt someone, they could have at least put a note with him, with a name on it.

Not to steer off topic here, it is absolutely wonderful this old guy is going to have a good christmas.  But older male dogs tend to wander off, and I understand Pyrs have a habit of wandering in general, but maybe this old guy wandered off somewhere and some person picked him up and dropped him because it was so cold.  I thought about this afterwards... maybe my excuse for humanity or the lack of it, because I just can't comprehend the owner dropping off a dog they had for 7-8 years in a drop box.. just can't go there.  It still doesn't explain why the owner didn't show up to claim him though.

Good Luck Nick!

YET ANOTHER UPDATE!!!!

HE'S IN MY BACKYARD!!!!!!  Can you believe it????  I left him "alone" (with the kids loving all over him) for a few minutes to come in and give you guys an update.  He stinks to high heaven and WILL be getting a bath tonight.  Other than that, he's a big ole love-ball.  I've really got to come up with a better name than T-Rex!  I'm thinking Teddy or Nick or Thunder...  LOL  Have introduced him to the current residents and he couldn't care less.  Bella did her "I'm queen" routine and settled on down.  Foster was like "look mom...a new playmate".  This has been through the fence with me holding the 2 of them...because I had sense or something.   ;)Will post some pics later....

Yes, he does.  He knows his commands - or at least the ones we've asked of him.

I swear this is my last post for the night...on this subject at least.  Wow - what a whirlwind of an afternoon!  Dh went and got baby shampoo and he's had his bath.  DIdn't want to do it but he was a trooper.  It was obvious that the warm water on his bottom felt really good.  If ya'll have a groomer and one of these hairy beasts, please do me a favor - Go kiss them!!!  I have washed and brushed until I'm afraid that I'm going to hurt him.  He still stinks but it's a little less and thus is bearable.  Baths may be a nightly thing around here for a while...  :D He's now officially a big puff ball with only a little discoloration left (from his constant licking).  I may have to shave his bottom and belly cause I think he's peeing on himself.  As tired as he is and after standing in the slippery tub, it's obvious to me he's got a few bone/joint issues.  It's either a patella, vertabrea, or his hips.  He's going to the chiropractor as soon as possible...  Well, then it was time for everyone to out and potty...you should have seen the look he gave me.  Like "PLEASE don't make me stay out...I saw that couch and I haven't gotten to try it out yet".  I swear!  And then when it was time to come in, he RAN to the door!  With a big grin on his face.  It breaks my heart.
BTW...dh, who likes to growl like a bear, and who wasn't the most enthused about this venture, almost missed pool because he wanted to see the final result of grooming.  And the whole time hollering about stupid people dumping dogs that are old and how could they? and they should be the ones in doggy prison...and how that was just wrong! and doesn't he look SOOOO much better already? Well, you get the picture.   ;D I'm almost in tears writing this.
Anyway, he's settled into the softest place he can get onto which is the dog bed...Foster's bed btw.  It'll be interesting come bedtime!

He's been great with the kids.  He took off down the road going from the pen to the yard so he's not allowed without a leash.  He's never seen a chicken and I thought he was going to swallow a tongue when the roo went after one of the hens.  He thinks the goats are wonderful possible toys.  And he's exhausted!  He'll probably sleep for days!

Guys, I really appreciate ya'll putting up with me on this.  Times are really tough right now and while this isn't something that I probably should do...it was something I had to do.  And this is the first time that I've had the chance to "give back" so I'm VERY excited.  Again, thank you for your forebearance.

I just came in here to give the daily digest...lol  Yes, thank you, we had a very good night.  Did the standard 3am thing and again at 6 but everyone settled right on in.  Baloo decided that since daddy was at pool, he could have the other 3/4 of the bed and I didn't have the heart to tell him no.  However, when daddy came in, he got right down and settled on HIS side of the bed!  Little traitor!  lol  They all played together this am...kind of looked like an Oreo in a blender!  ;D  No kidding!  Then we had our first fight...Bella discovered that Baloo had buried her bones and wasn't happy about it...then Baloo discovered Bella was uncovering them.  Well, no one got hurt as they weren't in it for blood and Bella decided the outside bones can be his but he has to leave the other ones alone.  ::) Baloo got groomed again this morning...and again I say Please kiss your groomer!  I now have several extra "dogs" in the trash cans... :o

Not much to report today.  Yesterday was very stressful for me as I was attempting to do too many things in too short of a time frame.  Dh had the dogs and said that Baloo just hung out all day.  I'm hoping he's just resting after the ordeal at the pound.  He's not depressed or upset or anything...jus t sleeping A LOT.  This morning  he really didn't want to go out and I had to make him so he could potty.

Y'all know this dog is supposed to be going to his real foster home next week...weeeell llll....we'll see about that.  Dh is on the computer with one hand on Baloo's head and the other on the mouse.  Baloo has decided that dh hung the moon and the stars.  Can you believe that???  I'm chuckling to myself but am trying to be..well...pru dent if nothing else.Of course I lost it a long time ago for this dog... ;D

The only issue that we're having is the sleeping arrangements.  Baloo has taken over Foster's spot at night and has Fos pretty upset.  I had to rearrange everything last night so Fos could be right next to me and settle down.  Some time during the night they played musical beds and Baloo ended up next to dh and Fos next to me.  Bella, of course, isn't about to move out of her corner... ;)  She is, after all, the queen!

Sounds like another good night for the fur-babies.  I am so happy that Bella and Baloo are making nice.  I love the morning reports.  I hope you gave him a hug from me last night, ok so I know you gave him a ton of hugs but tell him one if from Aunt Lisa.  Did he like the chicken jerky?

I know I was like the song "where are you Christmas" until this got started.  Now I am back to my total Christmas spirit self.  That is after a good  happy cry when cricket posted the first photos of him in her home.  Just look at those eyes they are filled with joy and hope, unlike the photo from the shelter. My hubby said there is just no life in his eyes at the shelter and life and hope in the other photo.  Just goes to show what a little TLC can do.

Hey guys...Night 3...  Well, let's see.  He hasn't been "worrying" his tail since I've brought him home.  In fact, he hasn 't licked at all.  he's due for another bath tomorrow and I think the rest of the "ick" will come out.  His skin is a pretty pink instead of the imflammed, angry red that it was, so I think this condition was stress induced.
We had another "diva" issue tonight.  Bella was very offended that Baloo walked into the bedroom in front of her!  Holy cow!  You would've thought Baloo just took her bestest toy!  Anyway, Baloo stood up to her and put her in her place and it was over very quickly.  Both dh and I were very shocked but thankful they are feeling comfortable enough to establish territory.
He hasn't eaten much.  Just lying around and sleeping.  Yesterday his nose was dry and very warm...today it's wet and cold and he's perkier.  His Aunt Lisa sent them some jerky and I (btw, thanks alot...I'll send you the hospital bills...lol)  got mobbed for them.  They now have a new favorite treat that they ALL like.  I'm going to have to keep them in the attic, I think, because that's the only place they can't reach.  Baloo will shake for treats too!
He doesn't, or hasn't, drooled except for when he first came. I need to remember to put drool rags everywhere but so far I haven't really needed them.
He's decided that dh hung the moon.   Dh has to take him out and Baloo will follow him around everywhere.  It's just the most adorable thing I've seen in ages....Transl ation...I'm holding my breath on this dog going ANYWHERE.   ;D
Well, I know this was a little disjointed and rambling.  I'm exhausted and I've had a couple so I'm going to go away for the time being.  Thanks, guys, for the ego strokes.  I promise I'm not an angel...I'm not even nice most of the time.  It was just something I had to do...However, it feels good to come here and have all ya'll saying that I am.  ;D

Well, let's see...how can I put this?  You can pry Baloo out of dh's cold, dead fingers...   ;D  He's pretty much healed up from the hematoma and now whenever he wants sympathy, he'll walk around with his head cocked to the side.   ::)  He's such a little lier!  I have to get him back into the chiropractor sometime in the next couple of days.  I've been icing him and giving him gloucosimine so a lot of the edema has dissipated.

He now has a new hobby....steal ing everyone else's beds!  And if you walk by him, he'll growl.  Not being aggressive, just talking to you.  Everytime he does it, I have to stop and "bother" him so I know he's not a threat.  It's settling down some too.  He and Bella have made peace for the most part.  Oh, he has also decided he is the "keeper of the doors"....and lays across them so you have to kill yourself to get into a room...and growls at Bella and Fos when they try to go through.  Im correcting him and he's not liking the idea at all.  He'll sulk for a couple of hours and then do it again.  I just have to laugh at him.  He's so funny.  It's wonderful watching him unfold his personality.

Ooooohhhhhh!  That's great!  Glad to hear that DH has gotten the right priorities ;)

As for the doors, that is SUCH a Pyr trait!  They want to be sure they don't miss anything coming or going.  I miss my big dust mop across the door.
