: EBAY WANTS TO AUCTION OFF ANIMALS
: Svnt4God December 19, 2005, 12:36:36 AM
Has anyone heard about this?   Does anyone know if this is actually true?
Then I also heard that eBay is reconsidering. ..   any info anyone?

EBAY WANTS TO AUCTION OFF ANIMALS AND THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT OK BY SAYING THEY WILL HAVE A SHELTER/RESCUSE SECTION.    STOP THIS INSANITY BEFORE IT GETS STARTED.  SEND THIS TO EVERY ANIMAL LOVER YOU KNOW.

EBay is taking feedback on wether or not they should allow animals to be auctioned off. please start a letter writing campaign , post feedback or whatever you can to tell them how you feel. auctioning off live animals is wrong and just another venue for the puppy millers....

I just received an email from another group that I am on saying that they will NOT be doing this because of all the responses they received.

That idea is just SICK.  I really hope it isn't true, but if they are still considering let me know.

I just sent off an email to Lori Pretzer, Pet Supplies Category Manager, of eBay asking her to please confirm with me whether or not eBay is re-considering SELLING animals on eBay.

I will keep you all posted when (or if) I get a reply.

For anyone else that would also like to send her a private email, her email address is:  pretz@ebay.com

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your additional feedback. While we had hoped to be able to find common ground on the issue of facilitating local shelter adoptions on eBay.com, it appears that sentiment among our members is strongly going the other way. In short, the dominant point of view we’ve heard is that you do not want pet listings – whether for adoption from shelters or from commercial breeders – on eBay.com. Consequently, we will not pursue the idea further.

We have initiated a preliminary discussion with Betsy Saul, President of Petfinder.com – a site that many of you suggested – to talk about possible ways we might work together. We will let you know what we find out.

Sincerely,

Lori

Subject: Selling Animals on eBay ???

This concept is very disturbing to me.

Dogs, Cats & other animals are slaughtered each and every day in our local shelters and "humane" societies.   There are more pets than there are people that want them.

Selling pets on eBay will only promote the BYB (Backyard Breeders) to produce and SELL (for profit) more unwanted animals that alot of them will be slaughtered too.

Lets promote getting these animals out of the slaughter houses and out of the rescue organizations and into a warm, friendly home like yours and mine.

I have heard quite a bit of feedback on numerous message boards that I am a member of stating that eBay is re-considering the idea of SELLING animals on eBay.

Can you please verify this fact with me?  I would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Barbara Laird

While I think that the idea of live animal sales on ebay is just weird and wrong, they ARE in a position to do something to help homless animals, and should be commended for their desire to do so. They already have a huge network of regular ebayers, and the structure in place to put it all together. I saw in that e-mail a suggestion of working with Petfinder? That's a great idea.

As long as ebay isn't PROFITING...I mean, its OK to recoup some of their cost or whatever, then I think its great. I don't see any reason why something as large as ebay shouldn't get involved in animal rescue to a moral and responsible extent.

And honestly, I wasn't opposed to the idea of non-profit 501(c)3 shelters being able to post on ebay. It basically just sounds to me like a "Petfinder" section of ebay. None of us have problems with petfinders, obviously! (hhehehehe!) The groups can still do their own screening, charge the same adoption fees, but potentially have a waaaaaaaaaaaaa y bigger audience for their homeless pets. I thought it was a great idea. As long as it was limited to rescues with non-profit status.

certainly if it were just a way to list animals that need rescue, it would be bad.  I think the problem is that it wouldnt have just been a listing.  I don't know what the real plan was, but if it involved auctioning in any way.... or even without auctioning, not having screening.... that is just asking for BAD PEOPLE.......

Really glad to hear they are rethinking it.

It was on the news this morning that ebay was overwhelmed with demands that they NOT post live animals...unde r any condition.  SO!!!  That's that!  It's not going to happen!  Good job, guys!!!
