: names for a male puppy
: anniemae May 14, 2005, 08:12:06 PM
Hi !
We have our little berner boy coming home in 3 weeks. I have never named a male before. I know we have to get to know him a little and pick out a name that fits him best , but I would like to get a list of names lined up to start with..my problem is I am having such a hard time making a list of names that I actually like. One name I am thinking of is Blaze..after that, only question marks...so I am asking all of you with big male dogs to help me out..what are some of your dogs names?? All suggestions are welcome! Thanks for your help!

Ann Marie,

I love picking out names....and I usually have names picked out for pets before picking out the pet!  3 of my cats were named before we even started looking for them, and we had our berner names picked out ahead of time too (Jack for a boy...and Daisy for a girl...we got a Jack!)  It's a great name, isn't it Tina!?  If we get another Berner...okay, WHEN we get another Berner, we still like Daisy for a girl and Remi for a boy.

I love Tina's suggestion.  That is a great way to get the entire family involved...and if you aren't married or don't have kids...friends and extended family would be a great polling source.  My guess is that whatever name you choose...you'll have a handful of nicknames that you use most of the time anyway.  We usually call Jack by the nicknames Jimmy or Puppy.  He comes to all 3 names!

Have fun picking out a name!

when i was about 5 years old...i decided one day i wanted 3 HUGE dogs, and i wanted to name them walter, luther, and angus.  well.....when i brought home my puppy, i thought he looked more like an angus than anything else....so now i just wait for walkter and luther to join the family!

i think you should name him bubba.  i don't know why, but i really want a huge dog named bubba also!

GOOD LUCK......POST TONSSSS OF PIX!

Hi everyone!
Thanks for sharing your names and photo's..you all have beautiful dogs!  I do like the name Bubba..kind of fits a berner..but my friend had a berner named that, he just passed in march, so I wouldn't use it. Her other berner is named Bernie..so thats out also~ I did go on the net and searched names, both dog and human..I was looking for a name to fit a big handsome boy that is not commonly used..very hard. I have two female maltese..that to me was so easy..(Isabella and Tia) I do have two children and a hubby..but the names they pick made me cringe..lol!! I will let you know what we do come up with.

Thanks!
Ann Marie :)

Hi there.  I had a great dane/greyhound mix (at least, that's what we thought he was) who we named bulldozer ('cuz that's what he did ... bulldozed everything), dozer for short.

Hope that helps.

Picking a name is fun however it can be also hard to pick just one that suit your puppy! Blaze sound's gorgeous name.
How about - Monty - Singen - Wilson - Oscar - Murren - Hugo - Ringo - Hansi - Turi - Maxi - Moik - Dudley - That's all I could think - Good luck for having a new puppy! Keep us posted and show us the photo!

Hi Ann Marie!  Congratulation s on your new boy!  That's such a fun and exciting time.  We just brougt home a new addition to our family as well. We got another Newf, a black male 2 weeks ago.  We currently have a female Newf so we experienced the same as you with what to name a male dog.  I like some of the ideas others have listed, such as getting your family involved.  We didnt do that, my husband and I (no kids) brainstormed a few. We named our male Newf Rocco.  It fits him perfectly!  Other male names we liked were: Zeus, Ceasar, Storm, Thunder, Guiness, Max, Boulder, or Tank. Good luck and let us know what you decide to name him.   :)   Gina

OH! I like Guinness!! Since Bernese Mountain Dogs were originally bred to hunt bear (that's right, isn't it?) - how about Grizzly or Kodiak? Or you can name him after some "big" men? Who are your heroes? I like Cosby, Roosevelt (kinda long??), King (MLK), Disney, Abe (Lincoln), etc.
Be sure to let us know what you decide!

Have you tried looking up baby names on the internet?  It seems to be a good place to begin brainstorming.  What about relatives and/or loved ones you can name him/her after?  For example, my Betti is named after my grandmother Betty.  It gives her name a lot of meaning for me since there is a strong connection.  What about looking up the name "bear" in other languages?  Even inanimate objects, names of mountains...th ere are so many mountain ranges throughout the world...

I used to name my fish after the islands of Japan.

We had the name Bullwinkle picked out for out 1st dog...But, when we went to get Samson he just didn't look like a Bullwinkle...l ol..but I still like the name...Remembe r the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons anyone?...Rocky was a flying squirrel & Bullwinkle was a big goofy moose.

I guess it all depends on if you are looking at official registered names for his papers, or for the name you will be calling him?  When I sell my puppies, our kennel name is first on the registration, then this was my "A" litter, so the next name has to begin with an "A" after that the new owners complete the naming on the papers or they ask me to, I just did two males as "Kilde's Apache Dreamer" and "Kildes Aztec Wind Runner" ANother my be "Kilde's Amazing Grace" called gracie by her owners, but this one they are deciding.  I also go onto sites and look up names and meanings in other countries, there are some pretty neat names out there.  Shana

  Hi everyone!
Thanks so much for sharing your names.. they are all great! What GORGEOUS dogs all of you have ..I loved reading about how you came about names for your dogs, and LOVED the pictures! Our first breeder fell through, we had a serious  communication problems. It’s beyond me why some breeders can not keep their promise, or simply do not communicate with their puppy people….well it turned out we hit it lucky!! We found the best breeder, honest, answered all my questions and has 30 years experience breeding berners and highly respected in the berner community …drum roll….she had a male available, absolutely gorgeous and  we are picking him up this weekend!!!! *loud scream* lol!! We are all very excited to say the least.  I will post his picture when we get him home.. He was born March 9th and is already a very big boy…
I will  post  pictures after his homecoming. (and his name) Stay tuned. … Thanks to all of you..

I like Jack, Tucker  (Just think ...when your mad at him you can call him Tucker the FU$#er!!!)  My Cocker's name is Duke.  I also like Maxwell (Of course) and Viggo.  (The actor from Lord of the Rings.)  A large male breed dog should either have a powerful name or the complete opposite.  Cupcake!!  Ha Ha! My husband and I only have pets but if I ever had a son, I think I'd name him Jack.  It's such a power name!!  Good luck on your choice and you'll have to let us know what you've chosen!!

I love names that mean something....o ur first Newfie was Otis...."Sittin' on the dock of the bay" by Otis Redding.  Our second Newf was named for my husband's company (he didn't know we were pregnant with a puppy so I thought it was a good way to soften the blow!! ;D) Cowboy came to us named and trained...Ches ter is  named for the town near our mountain cabin.  I liked Quincy as well which is another town.  I LOVED Hootie (for Hootie Johnson, head of Augusta National because all my boys and husband play golf and would LOVE to play there!) but everybody thought it sounded too much like "Hooters".

my favorite harry potter character is sirius black, and he occasionally takes the form of a very large black dog.  if i ever get a big black dog, i will go with either sirius or his codename padfoot.  Might be better for a newfie... but there are lots of good potter names..... hagrid maybe or Grawp who lived in the mountains.....  ok i am a little to obsessed for a 22 year old college grad.... but everyone needs their fun.
