: Found my soul mate
: smsmith January 22, 2006, 01:21:32 PM
Hello All.  I am the proud roommate of Einstein -- a half Pyrenees half Irish Wolfhound.  The sweetest, most beautiful dog I've ever seen.  I adopted him yesterday in the middle of a thunderstorm here in Houston, Texas.  It was meant to be.  I look forward to lots of good advice and feedback from the contributors to this website.  I've been lurking around for a few weeks because I was preparing myself to make a commitment -- I've been amused, touched and motivated by your posts.

About Einstein:  He 4 years old (or 2, depending on who you ask).  He's all white, with the dew claws, but his coat is wiry.  He weighs 100 lbs., loves to sleep, be scratched and brushed.  Enjoys walks, but isn't impatient about going outside.

Our first night together (last night) he slept on the floor at the foot of my bed (he refuses to get on the furniture).  Besides snoring, he didn't make a sound.  This morning we went for a short walk and he was sniffing the ground, but didn't seem the least bit perturbed by other dogs -- even the dogs that were barking to him.

Okay, I could go on and on, but I'll be posting more in the future and you'll get to hear all about him!

You're not the first to point out the resemblance with the SRO.  I took a look at the photos and except for his dew claws, he looks exactly like the SRO.  COOOOLLLLL  he's even specialler than I thought!

I went home for lunch and found him sound asleep (he sleeps like a log).  I brought him a gigantic rawhide bone and he was happy.  Barked when I left, but he hadn't disturbed anything in the house and seemed like he was enjoying himself.

I'm so lucky.

I'll borrow a digital camera and post more photos tomorrow.  At lunch time I went home to check on him -- I woke him up!  I brought him a gigantic rawhide bone and he was very happy.  Barked goodbye as I drove off.

Thank you everyone for your raves -- I'm pretty crazy about him.  I wasn't this bad when my grandson was born.

Einstein had his first trip to PetSmart last night.  My daughter works there and she was so excited to have him there!  He really got the attention.  I was so amazed at how calm he was.  After he got past the automatic doors, he was great.  Very tolerant of the people petting him and other furkids sniffing him.

When we got home, since we had a new collar and leash, we walked down the street a ways.  When we turned back, he knew exactly which driveway and went directly to the door -- turns out he was hungry!  He ate two bowls of his new food.  He does seem a little on the thin side, so I didn't mind.  We're going to the vet tomorrow afternoon and I'll get his/her advice on quantity.

Still hasn't barked except to let me know he's still out in the yard or to say goodbye.

I haven't measured him, but I'm six foot tall and when he walks up to me I don't have to bend down to scratch behind his ears.  Tomorrow at the vets we'll find out more.

By the way, I'm convinced now he is a South Russian Ovcharka (even though I can't pronouce it).  Thank you to everyone who noticed that.

I was looking at a website on that breed they are also called Russian Sheepdog, I can't pronounce Ovcharka either.  :) They are such beautiful dogs. And it was very interesting to read about the history of them as well. Anyway your pup came to mind and I really think that what you have is South Russian Ovcharka as well.

Wow!  He certainly is a head turner!  He may get a little more energetic once he settles in, gets up to weight and gets comfortable.  It does take a lot of energy to recover and get used to a new home, esp if he spent some time at the pound or had a foster home in between.  Thanks for all those pics!  He is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement.   Last night for the first time I heard him growl.  I believe he was growling at a perceived danger outside, but I looked at him sternly and said "don't you be growling at me" -- then he curled up on the floor.  He'd just been out in the yard and had been barking .  .  .  I think he thought he was warning me of something.

Also I'm teaching him to sit -- every time we go outside or before I feed him, I make him sit.  As well behaved as he is, I'm surprised he didn't already know this.  When we go for walks, he's very good about staying right beside me.  He is mildly curious about other dogs.  He doesn't cower or puff up either when a dog is barking at him -- he just looks at them as if to say, don't worry little fella, I'm not going to hurt you.

A little schnauzer took a great interest in him and was jumping all around (behind a fence).  Einstein just stood there very patiently and let the little guy sniff him.  He truly is a gently giant.

One more thing -- he was very obliging and let me brush him -- most of him.  He's going to have a bath this weekend and I'm hoping he is agreeable about it.   Does anyone have any advice about what to do to help his coat grow in thicker?  When he was turned into the shelter he had patches of missing fur on his sides and his elbows.  I don't think the elbows will be growing back in, but his sides seems to be filling in pretty well.  He's also a little thin on his snout.

Thanks for your feedback and I'm so happy to have this forum.

There's a great product for helping with a healthy coat.  It's called Inflight Coat Formula (www.inflightco atformula.com).  It keeps the coat in longer (suppresses shedding) and allows the new coat to fill in.  A lot of breeders use it for their dogs who are being shown.

Oh, wow! What a stunner he is - he's definitely my kind of dog. I've wanted an SRO myself for ages, and he certainly looks like one. Unfortunately, there aren't any here in the UK so I guess I'll just have to find a Wolfhound and a Pyrenean and take it from there ;)

Or maybe just clip my Kom...?

I have been using the Inflight for about a week on Dixie.  I only plan to use it to get ready for the March set of shows.

What do you think of it?  I've got a bucket in the freezer and haven't used it yet.  Chester's coat got so thick and heavy for the winter (in So. Calif???) so he didn't need it...and I haven't worked up the courage to show him.  The breeder recommended it for him....

So far so good.  I just add it to her good and she likes it.  I do think it is adding a little extra undercoat and a very nice shine to her coat.  The breeder that told me about the Inflight breeds Newfs.

Oh, do a show. You will so get hooked on it.  I have 18 days of show I want to go to this year.
