: nickerbokker January 24, 2006, 04:09:29 PM
yep...so...thi s may make me look really stupid, but here it goes.

about 6 months ago, i started giving cody that solid gold seaweed stuff....all was great until one morning he threw up golfball sized green balls.  took it to the vet, they thought he ate a plant (which for those of you who DO NOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE DOGS ALL DAY) know if you are there with them, they absolutely did not eat a freaking plant.  i think it was the solid gold stuff.... around this time, cody had been putting on weight.  then, within a month he gained 15 pounds, and now looks like a whale.  did all the blood work, started starving him, more exercise...all that good stuff, and nothing.  not losing any weight at all.  the other thing is his crap is getting smaller and smaller, almost to puppy size.  WHAT IS GOING ON?  who knows?  the vets are not concerned....f resno or st louis....and since the blood work is ok they wont do anything else.

who has an idea?  tell me its something simple.  or nothing at all.

Are you still feeding the solid gold seaweed stuff???  If so, maybe he should have a break and see if it helps.  Cowboy's poops are tiny!  But he eats only meat and veg (a pound each meal) and no kibble so I think he uses most of it up!

Weird.  Maybe trying changing to food if it bothers you.....or not! ;D   If the vets aren't concerned and if he seems active and full of his usual Cody-ness, he's probably fine.....

OH NO!!  Poor Cody, and his weight issue!!  Kinda sounds like that seaweed stuff isn't good for his system.  Are you still feeding it to him?  If you are I think it kinda sounds like he might have a blockage somewhere, but I'm a huge overeactor so don't freak out by the blockage thing.  Maybe take him in for x-rays just to be safe.  Poor guy hopefully he'll loose the weight and get over the digestive issues.  Keep us updated on what you find out!

You could always send some of Cody's extra weight to Koby, he needs it badly!!  We've been calling him heroine chic lately cause he's so skinny!

It seems like he is digesting as much of the food as possible, storing some, and barfing up the rest.  I think you should change food and take all the green plants out of his cage.

well.....the day he puked up the green balls, he was off the seaweed.  and then i got him back onto his old food....so no more solid gold anything.  but without the seaweed or food, he is still fat with small poopers.

i guess i could do the x-rays thing...cuz i am outta ideas.

Awww Nicki, don't look to far into my craziness!  Like I said I'm an overeactor and I don't have a clue what I'm talking about.  If he's still pooping that's a good sign.  If he hasn't pooped at all and is puking his food up then I'd say YES get him into xrays.  The seaweed stuff sounds EVIL and scary. lol  If you're feeding him a rich/high calorie food he may just be gaining weight because of that.  Maybe the food your feeding is so good that all the nutrients are going to his system and less waist is coming out, like what greek4 had said.

Our guys haven't had any problems with the seaweed stuff that we have seen, but who knows - maybe they have huge green balls of gook sitting in their stomachs!

Just wondering??? Why do they even make sea weed dog food?? What are the benifits supposed to be??
Sorry Nicker nothing against you choice in food, I would likely try something new like this too. It just mkes you wonder why they would make a food with sea weed?

I'd be thinking about a good dose of cod liver oil about now, and possibly adding more liquid to his diet ( put him on skimmed milk for a couple of days) if he isn't ailing anything I wouldn't worry too much.

coon it's this supplement crap.  you dissolve it in hot water, then mix the food with it.  the food itself is good, but cody got nasty loud gas so i took him off it.  i dunno.

Yeah, it is like a powder-type supplement, but it isn't really powder-y.  It is more flaky.  I guess it is supposedly good for their immune systems and other stuff.  The only real outward difference we have seen is that their coats are super soft....  But, like I said, they could be all plugged up with kelp on the inside!

You want a softer shiney coat? That's easy.  Feed him 2 tablespoons of yogart on his food once a day.  it's good for his digestion too!  Lady and Grace get it every night and they are so soft and shiney.   They poop like mad.  Really big too!   If you're worried it might make him fat...get the low fat yogart.

Hi,

One of the other boards I read has a bunch of Raw feeders on it. Many of them sware by this stuff  ??? Seaweed sounds pleasant compared to this.

Raw sounds great but boy I'd have a hard time serving up that stuff  :P

1 TBS of peanut oil 1x's day helps with a dry coat too :)

EWWW Thats just nasty. I could likely buy a whole cow for the price of it too. I keep thinking that I should raw feed Judge but Im not sure if I could stomach it. I have trouble eating meat if Im the one to cook it.

I feed my guys the can Solid Gold Green Tripe with their dry food, they can not get enough of it.  I add about 1/4 call to each meal.

I feed my pups raw and supplement it several times a week with Tripett canned green tripe. The smell is a little unusual (as in nasty) but they love it and it's supposed to be good for them.

One of my dobes, Sasha, has such a sensitive stomach that if I fed her raw she would puke all night!  She cant even handle a raw beef bone without puking for hours after it's gone.  Very sensitive, she is. (did I just sound like Yoda???)

What about Wangus?  Is he eating the same food as Cody?  Does he have the same issues?

Maybe take Cody off his food altogether and start over.....maybe fast him for a day and then do the sensitive tummy diet for a week or so (boiled chicken and white rice) and see if makes any difference.

It IS a mystery!!

no kidding huh?

this all happened a while ago, like several months.  but he has remained fat since.  and i did take him off the seaweed stuff, AND the food cuz of his gas, and now he is on the nutro natural that his belly has always done great on.  so basically everything has changed except for his weight.  AND, he is getting WAY more exercise.  him and angus run in the yard several times a day, they go on long walks a couple times a week...and for the most part...cody stays in the yard all day and runs by himself (he can be offleash and angus can't).

so yup, i am stumped.
: Re: really small poopers
: nickerbokker January 25, 2006, 11:38:37 AM
AND, if i starve him, he throws up.

he is on a very strict food schedule, and if i'm late by even 30 minutes, he is up chucking everywhere.

Has the vet done an xray?  Have you cut the amount of food he's getting?

This is all very confusing.  It sounds like he's completely healthy and you are doing everything right....but why would he get fatter and fatter and have smaller and smaller tootsie rolls???
: Re: really small poopers
: nickerbokker January 25, 2006, 01:29:44 PM
I KNOW.

the one thing we have not done is Xrays.  i guess that is next on the list because i dont know what else to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the vets dont necessarily want to do them, because they do not think anything is wrong...they just think he is beefing up in the older age (4).

I DONT KNOW.  thanks to EVERYONE who replied

Have you thopught of getting him on some sort of GI supplement? You know how they have them for humans to "clean out" the system. They might have some for dogs. I sounds like he is constipated. And he needs something to get things moving. That could explain the weight gain, his full and bloated. Just a thought.

Okay...re. the thyroid test....that's a great idea!  I know, with humans, that the thyroid values vary widely and also fluctuate.  So you can be tested and it falls in the 'normal' range, but you still have symptoms.  What then?  You try actually taking thyroid to see if your symptoms are mitigated.  In that case, you need thyroid.  From what I understand, Synthroid is one of the cheapest drugs around....do you think Cody could just try it for a couple of weeks???   I have NO idea of this theory would hold true in the dog world...maybe your vet will just laugh his rear end right off....(interesting look...buttles s vet!!! ::))  In that case, here are apologies up front!!! ;D
