: Revolution VS. Frontline Plus
: hairprincessnyu January 25, 2006, 10:15:08 PM
Ok, so I used to be dead set on Revolution for my cats, but then my vet convinced me to switch to Frontline Plus. Now my mom is asking me which one to order for Cesco, and I am all confused. Does anyone know for sure which one protects against more and protects better for cats and dogs? The research is just confusing!!!

Advantix also protects against mosquitos which carry heartworm (and fleas and ticks)....but you can't use it if you have cats.

It's totally toxic to cats.  If there's any chance at all that a cat could lick the spot where the dog has the Advantix, you aren't supposed to use it.  I use it on Cowboy because it has the least chance of causing seizures....bu t my cats (all three!) would no more think of licking a dog, um, than  a cactus.....

I get warned EVERYTIME I get it from the vet.

WOW that is really good to know!!  :o

There's a warning on the box as well, but it is stated something like "not for use on cats".  What my vet said is that it will kill them.  She flips out everytime I get it, but I've promised her that Raider, Pawn and Jack want absolutely NOTHING to do with the Newfs....and I know it's the safest thing for the big guy.

Be careful if you're getting Frontline Plus...anythin g you can get without a vet prescription is generally a knock-off.  My mom works at a vet's and I think the formula is even incorrect sometimes.  I believe we use Revolution but i'm not sure...my mom gets free samples but I'll get back to you with a definite answer on which is better from my mom she knows the pros and cons of all of them, I can't remember off the top of my head.
but newflvr is right about the advantix of being highly toxic that I do remember.

: Kiahpyr January 26, 2006, 12:18:45 AM
I had the same question when I got Kiah. My vet told me that since I have cats Advantix is a major no no. Revolution does have the heartworm protection, so it has to soak through the skin to do it. In this case if your dog picks up fleas the flea has to bite the dog in order to get the toxins. With Frontline the flea just has to land on your dog to get the toxins and it doesn't soak through the skin. I have indoor cats and don't keep any flea protection on them, so I go with frontline. I was using Revolution and Kiah brought fleas into the house. I freaked out because there's no guarentee that they can't reproduce. I then switched to Frontline, so no matter what those nasty things can't reproduce on me.

Here's a comparison of some of the differences...
http://frontline.us.merial.com/products/sub3_compare.asp

If I were in an area with bad flea/tick infestation.. Oh wait, I'm in swampy south Alabama :) I'd use frontline and Heartgard, but in a colder area maybe with less fleas revolution would probably be the way to go it would be cheaper since you don't have to buy 2 things.  I like the frontline + because it kills the flea eggs, and lots of types of ticks.

Check out http://www.petshed.com for great prices on Frontline, Revolution, and heartgard.. we're ordering from them now and saving a lot over vet prices.

I was using Frontline and had a HORRIBLE infestation last spring.,  I could not get those buggers to die.  Seemed like the population got worse everytime I treated so I went to Advantage.  Between that and the chickens, I don't have them anymore and considering I live in the country, that's saying something.  I've not tried revolution though.

We use Frontline Plus and HeartGuard.   We only treat from roughly May to November....de pending on the weather.   We've never had a flea problem.  Now that I typed that we will be overrun this year.  :-\   We have had battles with tics.
Maine has a large deer population.   It's always something!

I like having to administer the 2 products rather than just one.  I apply the Frontline first. That's the "medicine".
Then they get the HeartGuard.

I have used Revolution on cats AND dogs since it came on the market.  The company provided it for free to animal shelters for a few years, and it was the best product I had ever tried- the rescue would have so many animals brought in who were so infested they were dehydrated and close to death, and the Revolution took care of every single flea in 24 hours or less.   We had no problems after that with fleas anywhere- on the critters or in the environment.   It is supposed to work on ear mites as well, but from experience, some of the critters had mites so bad, we felt the best solution was to clean the ears and treat the mites as well as using the revolution on them, so I can't verify whether it killed serious ear mite problems on its own or not, but I CAN say they never got reinfected with mites once we cleaned and treated them.  Maybe its prevention, maybe it is a cure- can't say for sure.

I checked out the website, and the prices for Frontline were unbelievable!  Very cheap.  Then I saw why:

Product Disclaimer
Frontline® Plus has been approved for sale in Australia by the APVMA. The U.S.A. equivalent of this product has been approved for sale by the EPA.

Both the Australian and U.S.A. products contain the same active ingredients, Fipronil & (S)-Methoprene.

However, the products sold by Pet Shed are sold in Australian packaging which has not been approved for sale in the U.S.A. As a consequence, the Australian packaging does not have EPA approval and the sale and purchase of products in the Australian packaging may be illegal in the U.S.A.

If they are basically the same product, does it really make a difference?  I'm curious, b/c it sounds like a great deal, but if its illegal, not so sure if I would want to purchase from them.

I do the same this with the heartgueasrd as a treat after the frontline.  It works well for shakes, and wee keep him on it all year long out here in CA, just in case.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, so, even though i have not had this problem i though i would mention that fleas are becomeing imune to some of the products in some areas.  Ask your vet if this is happening in your area, and they will probably know.  Some areas fleas are imune to one product, and in another area they are imune to a totally different product.

In regards to the second post about petshed.com, do you all think the products sold on that website are the same formula as in the US or do you think they are fake? The prices do seem really good, now I am wondering if it is the real thing or not!
: Re: Revolution VS. Frontline Plus
: chaos270 January 27, 2006, 12:17:48 PM
The Frontline Plus that's not the US kind tends to be less effecient and the Manufacturer won't stand behind it.  If you open the package and it has stripes across the foil that means it's the counterfiet and I'm sure there are disclaimers on the site selling it.  (Also the stuff at petstores like Petco is the counterfeit).  Frontline is better on the fleas and ticks than the Revolution though from my Mom's experience.  But anywhere that is either your vet's or requires a vet's prescription generally is the real stuff.

We haven't been using the petshed stuff long, but no problems here, and everyone seemed to love them from what all I've read.  Google "petshed review"  or something similar.   I have never heard of a dog getting sick from it or anything.

I just really dont believe this is any different than the same stuff I get from my vet, except I pay $15/syringe at the vets and $8somthing at petshed.  I tend to think that is probably rumors spread from vets not getting their cut, but maybe I'm paranoid like that :)   I think the worse case scenario is if it doesn't work as effectively, then you switch back to the stuff from the vet.

Here's an article on the Frontline site regarding it:

http://www.frontline.com/epa/
EPA site: http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:o1HAoDHai8UJ:www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/retailerfactsh.pdf+counterfeit+frontline&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=4

The counterfeiters have repackaged certain quantities of product destined for foreign markets in forged cartons

Just to clear things up, the stuff from petshed is the stuff with an orange stripe, listed as a counterfeit on the Frontline site.  I'm going to continue to use it, the epa statement on Frontline's site just says to me that they have bought it in bulk and repackaged it.   If it isn't working good when we are in the full glory of flea season this summer I'll see if the stuff from the vet is any better... we usually get our frontline in syringes dosed out from the vet anyways (who purchases it in bulk), so it would probably be no different.  But I HATE! fleas & ticks, so I hope it works just as well.
