: Upgrades to the Boards
: Bear February 10, 2006, 12:38:40 AM
Just a heads up for those of you that are on tonight, we'll be rolling out our upgrades to the forum tonight. Everything should work correctly while we do this but if it doesnt, just wait a few minutes or let me know on this thread.

Hope it all goes smoothly!

Michael

Hmm...I've got to be honest, Michael...not sure if I like it or not. Its kind of confusing...
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Bear February 10, 2006, 01:27:53 AM
Scary?? elaborate!

Things are in different places (and at the moment missing in a few areas) but I'll keep working on it until things are instinctual.

Please post as much feedback as you can!

: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Nicole February 10, 2006, 01:36:44 AM
Ditto what Holly and Jenn said. I don't like the ads in the middle of the posts, either. And the fonts are too small..and its just um...too hard to read in general. But, the colors are nice, and Holly's right, it does look slick.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Nicole February 10, 2006, 01:38:01 AM
OH, and when you post, you have to pick the General Forum from the pulldown "Quick Jump" menu...don't like that...I'd like a link at the top like there used to be!!
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Bear February 10, 2006, 01:39:21 AM
are you kidding Holly? the chat link is "only" on the companion page? omg

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY! BIGGER FONTS AND A LINK BACK TO THE BOARDS!

: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Bear February 10, 2006, 02:00:29 AM
Keep it coming! :):)

are you kidding Holly? the chat link is "only" on the companion page? omg

Well, excuse me!  I thought you wanted feedback!   :P   ::)   ;)

Is there any indication any more about whether you've already read a post (the "new" thingie)?

It was easier to read when quotes showed up in a different color font.

I'm sorry, I don't like it, at all. Please don't be offended, it is very confusing though. The ads in the middle of everything are horrible, and just the way everything is displayed is all discombobulate d, lol, or however you spell it. Just doesn't look right!

I liked it the other way better...I am a creature of habit too.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards

I think I will have to use it a few days and then decide.  :)
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: chaos270 February 10, 2006, 01:14:37 PM
I'm way confused.  It's hard to figure out what goes with what. Definitely need something to seperate posts so you can tell who's posted what.  Some sort of line in between or a border on each post(don't know which is easier).  Otherwise it's cool to have the person's rank on their posts and maybe add their location?  Plus the intermingled advertisements are annoying.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: kristi February 10, 2006, 01:50:02 PM
I agree with Chaos...
A border between posts or a frame around it or something.
I don't like the ads in the middle of everything - they're annoying - weren't they at the top before - kind of out of the way?
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Blair February 10, 2006, 03:10:32 PM
Yeah Ive gotten use to it to....I guess I really dont care what it looks like, as long as I can still post and read messeges and chat with all of my BPO friends  ;D
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Scootergirl February 10, 2006, 03:12:42 PM
I love the new changes! It keeps getting better all the time. I can't wait to see what new stuff you're keeping under wraps.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: K9ldy00 February 10, 2006, 03:32:50 PM
Does it just seem like there are less posts showing under recent posts or is it because everything is smaller?
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Nicole February 10, 2006, 04:03:21 PM
Also, some of the pics are covering up People's name and Paw Print name and rank and stuff. (just pointing that out!) Its getting better, Michael...keep working on it!hhhehehe!
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: jabear February 10, 2006, 05:39:17 PM
It does look good and the change is nice though it does take a little getting used to. Hang in there everyone!  ;D
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards

Thanks for all you do.. but it's a bit hard to read to my eyes :o
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: AC February 10, 2006, 06:47:51 PM
Not liking the changes so far. But I'm sure after a couple of days it will seem that the boards have always been this way. For those who like to see the signatures of the posters seperate from the post (on a different colour bkg) just keep your mouse off that column.

OK I AM NEVER LEAVING BPO AGAIN!  I don't sign on for one friggin day and look what you did to it! :'(  OK For starters I want more posts on the index page.  I like the diff colors in the posts to differentiate.  I'll post more after I explore a bit.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Stacey February 10, 2006, 07:59:46 PM
I think I am getting used to it.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: shangrila February 10, 2006, 09:16:24 PM
I hate to say it because I know how hard you are working, but I don't like the new layout. I guess I will get used to it, but there are three things about it that are really bugging me:
1. the google ads in the middle of the thread are really bothering me. I don't mind them at the top of the page, the bottom of the page, or even the side of the page, but I think it is really uncool to put them in the middle of the posts. I think they are tacky there and more importantly I think that it REALLY takes away from what BPO is all about. Having big glaring ads in the middle of the material makes it seem like ads are what bpo is about. BPO is about community and I think that most people  (myself included, but I am also thinking of new potential members and such) will be off-put by the ads being in the middle of everything.
2. There need to be dividers. There should be a physical line between each post and maybe even between the board and the side panel. Right now everything is so jumbled together it is hard to read and see who said what. If there were lines like there used to be it would be a whole lot easier to understand.
3. I am frustrated that the main index shows so few posts. I read BPO through the main index. When I get home from work I go to the index to see everything that has been posted since last night. With so few posts showing up on the main page I will miss things because more posts than that happen in a day.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Kermit February 10, 2006, 10:14:51 PM
I COMPLETELY agree with shangrila that more messages on the index page is better. I do the same thing, I check in with that page to see what I missed during the day. See what the "hot topics" are, if you will.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: longshadowfarms February 10, 2006, 10:16:43 PM
I think I came in late or not in a day or so?  Looks like lots of hte issues here are already resolved.  I can read the Paw Print Profiles again so I'm happy about that.  Kept getting error messages for a long time.  The ads in the middle of the threads are annoying for sure.  I'm a newbie though so I was not used to much of anything before.

: mjjensen February 10, 2006, 10:41:07 PM
Has anyone noticed that if you click on the "Paw Print Profiles" on the right side of the page that some of the profiles are missing? My "Sam&Max is missing as well as Anky's "Sanity" and Doghealers "Samson".

: stryder February 10, 2006, 11:40:28 PM
Bear,
I think you are making some great adjustments. The posts are easy to read, you have reduced the extranious white space, and it's loading as fast or faster than ever.
Keep up the good work.
THoM
P.S. The ads are disconcerting in the middle.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: kristi February 10, 2006, 11:54:35 PM
I was out all day & just got back on tonight...
I agree with Thom - it is looking better, but I still don't like the ads in the middle.
Is it possible to move them?

: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Bear February 11, 2006, 01:25:45 AM
Thanks for all this help and tips everyone - we're working thru them all one at a time. As you should notice, we've widened the thread column for more content per amount of space. We've added back more topics to the front page - there are 50 but perhaps we can add more. Familiar link placement has been added back. Text size has been changed where appropriate. I suppose we'll add lines - for those of you with stronger monitor contrast it's not needed as you'll see that each post has a different background color but obviously that hasn't been enough. Adjustments to the Paw Prints have been made but there are much bigger ones to come, ones that unfortunately are at the mercy of available time. Regarding the ads; we need some time to at least test this placement. I understand the feeling about them however with the change, we no longer have room for a 468 wide pixel ad, the previous size. Additionally, as consolation, previously there were two ads, at this moment there is now only 1. As for putting them in the side bar, we will try it, but give us time to run this placement test first. Remember that Jaime, Mark and myself need some help in the costs of BPO.

Stryder, with all of the changes, we've reduced the amount of code being transmitted and loaded by almost 60 percent so it should load much faster. Additionally, it's much more compliant and should adapt to all browsers better, win/mac/lin, pda, phone etc.

Anyway, keep the feedback coming - like I said we're working on it. We hope you'll enjoy it more once we've got it all ironed out.

The board looks very nice, but it is very hard on my little eyes.

I agree.
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Lyn February 11, 2006, 04:21:36 PM
It's hard on my eyes too. I don't think it's the colors though.

The font size within the posts are ok. But the main forum I have to squint to read.

I think what's also making it difficult to read is that everything seems like squished together.

After reading for about an hour yesterday I started to get a headache and I just couldn't read anymore. Now it's messing with my addiction. LMAO
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: paharts February 11, 2006, 05:16:03 PM
I think if the text is a darker color, it will be much easier to read. The font style is great and I like that the background is not white [white seems to have more glare].
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Nina February 11, 2006, 05:19:18 PM
I also think that if the font color was darker it would be easier to read. And as Red said I like that their are more posts on the front page. Also I liked it when I could see when a post was new, is there anyway of getting that back? Thanks for all the hard work that you are doing.

Keep them coming everyone... we'll make this work. I think you're right about the text color, I think that should make a huge difference. We're still working in the "New" buttons... Still thinking about the numbers - there is some space that I'm having a difficult time with but I'm unsure about removing the numbers altogether.. it's provides a needed offset from the continuous greyness and makes us a bit different. I'll keep working on it though. Still trying to get back to the topic line to make it stand out a bit.

Anyway, I'll get to these in a few minutes.. have to finish Bear up - he's getting a full wash and groom session as well as some new dressing for his banged up dew claw.

What timezone does BPO run in? I don't know if this is related to the new changes but I am in Central timezone and the newest post date for me is 12Feb at 12:00 even though it is now 13Feb 10:00. Does anyone else have this issue?? I know that the last post wasn't almost 24 hours ago. LOL
: Re: Upgrades to the Boards
: Newf Lover February 12, 2006, 12:26:27 PM
The new format it going to take a little getting used to.  It's a little awkward right now, you got jump around the board a little more and the script is a little small, you have to search for things.  It will take some time to get used to, but change is good, I LIKE IT!!!

Bhender254, you gotta go to your BPO profile, click on Look and Layout Preferences and change your settings.  It gives you the BPO time and then you can add or subtract hours off of it to make it equal to your local time.  It's really easy.

Michael,

The changes to the site have grown on me, and in a hurry! Only a couple of days and I totally enjoy the peaceful feel of the site now and the colour scheme is outstanding.

My screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 does cause the text to be rather small though. Do you know the percentage of users that view at 800 x 600? Have you tried a layout with fixed width left and right columns and liquid center with a min-width for the center? I am just wondering because I am always messing with css.

Also I just viewed my unreadreplies and that page has the right column under the left column (makes for a vey long page) most likely due to the absence of a center column.

Time.. that's been screaming at us for long time now hasn't it. Regarding text size, we're building a solution so that everyone can set the text size to a personally comfortable size without affecting others. All of this of course is pending Holly's approval. :)

There is still a list of other little bugs we're getting to, time permitting.
