hmm... I am not seeing pictures but I did view your website. :)
I have been dabbling in Great Dane genetics recently, and I was wondering about your male and female... are they both black-bred black? Or do they have any blue, harle, or fawn in their pedigrees? Or mantle? Dane genetics are very fascinating to me. Although I never plan to breed I am still very interested in what goes into choosing a breeding pair. I don't know any breeders in my area but if I did I would pick their brains. ;) ;D

They are very cute!  Thats a lot of puppies!  How many total were there?  I tried to count them in the pictures in on your website but I didn't know if any might be counted twice.

well, they are 3 and a half weeks old now....
I am thinking about letting them go between 7 & 8 weeks, I guess I need to work on my math lol

will depend on the pup and how they are doing tho.
they are on solid foods now..
mom is weaning them now.  This is earlier than any of my other danes ever did.

my vet said to let em go at 6 weeks! too early!!!

So are the parents both black-bred blacks? :)
Beautiful babies!

mom has harl 3 lines back
dad has harl/merle two lines back.

They are both black w/ small amounts of white markings on their chests...

Every single one of the pups has some white on their chest and a little on some toes.

was hoping for at least one solid black . lol  Oh well.. they couldnt be cuter :)

I have the opportunity to use a BEAUTIFUL blue male when Sara's sister comes in heat.

I need to do some research.  whatcha think?

I think that unless your black carries blue, which she wouldn't if she's a harle-bred black, you won't get any blues. Blues can only happen if both parents are carrying the blue gene. (Carriers of the blue gene can be black in color.)
The breeding you are thinking about might be considered combining the wrong color families together since your female isn't a black-bred black. Blues are usually bred to black-bred blacks or other blues. Your female could be bred to a harle successfully or a mantle, I think, and it would be staying in the right color family. You wouldn't breed her to a fawn or brindle for sure. If you bred her to a harle since she is a harle-bred black, you might get some really nice harlequins! Oooh!! :-*
But if you did breed her to the blue... you'd probably end up with some funky mismarks. Or just some black dogs. ::) I am totally new at this so if somebody catches an error in what I am saying please tell me!

It's really fascinating stuff!!! :D

I also have the opportunity to breed w/ a Beautiful harl...  I think thats the way I'm gonna go.  I LOVE harls...  But ooooh is that blue stud purdy!

I found a really great resource online about Dane color...
http://home.surewest.net/daneaffr/colinher.html

Hopefully that link will work. It sounds like a breeding between a blue and a harle-bred black is kinda... against the rules of Dane-breeding ethics. :-\ I think it's a no-no. :-[

"Harlequin-bred blacks should not be bred into other dane lines because they carry recessive white, even when they don't show it, and will produce offspring who are disqualified from both breeding and showing."

That is a quote I found from another website I have been reading...
http://www.dogstuff.info/ez_coat_color_genetics_great_dane_yousha.html

Happy studying! :D I am really getting into this stuff!! :D

ok you got me thinking.. I looked it up and this is what I found...
on this site.. http://www.dogstuff.info/ez_coat_color_genetics_great_dane_yousha.html

I'm gonna pull out my pedigrees and look closer and further back.  now you got me reading! I agree.. VERY interesting stuff!

Black x Blue: No harls, merles are possible. Generally only blacks and blues will be produced. You only get blues if the black is carrying for blue: which means somewhere in his pedigree he should have blue ancestors. All the blacks from this breeding will be carrying the recessive blue, even though they look just like black-bred blacks. Blacks carrying for blue can cause problems if bred to fawns/brindles as they introduce the blue gene which can cause blue masks/stripes and pups who look correct, but carry for mismarkings and will produce blue marked pups.

That is a cool website, isn't it?  :D Sometimes it is a little hard to understand, but I learned a lot on there! See, I have a fawnequin Dane, so I guess that is originally what sparked my curiosity on the subject. Since she is a mismark. Unfortunately since she was a rescue I don't know her history/pedigree. But I guess somoeone crossed a fawn with a harlequin or a harlequin-bred black! Those black Danes are tricky!!! :D

Besides those websites you listed, which have great info.........I'm more of a visual person.  I like this chart which explains which type of breedings are allowed and what kind of colors can be in the lines.

I have never had a Dane, although I lived with 2 for awhile.  I never knew it was so complicated breeding them!  This thread is SO interesting!
