Hi there,
some of you have seen the post: http://www.bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,8737.0.html
which has now turned into me worrying myself sick about Day-z who went into the vets with a runny tummy and now is being diagnosed with kidney failure. I won't know how bad it is until tomorrow morning.
Am not sure what i believe in, but whenever anyone posts on here that their baby needs help i think about them the next day and try and send positive karma. So, please think of Day-z tonight. I am hoping that they willl be able to patch her up and send her home and i can do the best i can to manage her kidney disease - but please think kind things for her.
Thank you
Jill

Oh no, poor Day-z. I'm so sorry to hear this. We are sending our best wishes and prayers for you both.
-
Hope day-z is feeling better and is able to come home with you tommorrow. We're thinking about you and Day-Z
-
Jill, sweetie: You don't have to know what you believe in, or even believe in anything at all. You're believed IN--by us, at the very least.
And everyone should get to have a prayer said when they're in need, no matter whether they believe or not. Day-z's on my list, and so are you. :-*
-
Poor Day-z!!! We'll be sending plenty of PT for her and L&L for all of you.
-
Thankyou everybody. I believe in St Bernard - I really do.
Day-z is probably fast asleep and would probably have been home now if i had not insisted on every test they have ever invented. However, i think it is best to know and then we can try to manage it.
I think i may just be in need of sleep (I spent the last 2 nights on the sofa next to Day-z for emergency toilet trips that rarely happened.)
Thanks again
Jill

Sending positive thoughts and best wishes from me and my gang in Atlanta...to you and Day-Z!!! Feel better girl!
-
Ah well, big girl made it through the night and her temperature seems to be better. Her stool is firming up and they might try her on some food this afternoon. So, she is doing OK, but will stay in today and probably tomorrow too.
And to think that i thought that maybe buying pumpkin would get the big baby well. Guess it really does show that sometimes they do need to go to the vets.
I miss her very much, but will not go and visit her - as it will upset her too much, and me i am sure.
They said to call tomorrow, but i will probably call later today. They plan on running full urinolysis tomorrow to see what the deal is with her kidneys after IV.
What a week.....
Thanks for the support

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that Day-z isn't well. I hope she will be back home with you very soon, I can imagine how you are missing her.
Sending lots of love and positive thoughts from here in the UK.
-
Well all being well Day-z may live in the UK too one day (I am British, living in Miami), so thanks and good that she has doggy friends there.
Update on her, she is alert and watching the people at the vets office, her stool is firming.
Tests on kidneys happen tomorrow - but I am a lot happier today than i was yesterday. Thanks so much people for the good BPO karma.
Jill and Day-z xxxx

I'm so sorry to hear about Day-z being in kidney failure. Hope it's the early stages and easily manageable or even better, the reading normalize themselves.
Sending you positive person and big hairy Tibetan Mastiff vibes from England. :)
-
Flynn really is very handsome !
I think Day-z could fall in love, well rather with him than the Pekinese she likes at daycare.
Thanks
Jill
-
I'm sure Flynn would love Day-Z - he finds it very difficult to find girlfriends his own size. All his playmates are shar-pei who are only half his size.
-
Update - she is staying at the vets for one more night at least.
Oh welll...
I got in touch with her breeder and her Father was hospitalized for pancreatitis at a fairly young age and had elevated creatinine levels - and happily made a full recovery.
I have told the vet this and while he says they have tested her for that it gives them something else to consider.
This has been one of the longest weeks of my life, and i cannot wait for her to come home.
Thanks all
Jill x

I thought I had already left good wishes for Day-z but when I looked I couldn't find them so I will once again wish Day-z the very best in her recovery and that they find whatever is making her ill and treat her quickly and painlessly.
I'm very sorry your baby isn't home with you hopefully, she can come home and be pampered and loved.
I just love her face she is the cutest baby!!!
-
I hope that Day-z recovers soon, and is able to come home soon. Pancreatitis can be a hereditary disease, and vets especially have a harder time diagnosing the disease because the dogs can not talk. Sometimes the other enzymes that they test for will not be elevated, sometimes it takes a day or two for them to elevate enough for a test to show some significance. If you are worried about pancreatitis an ultrasound is an easier way for the vet to see if the pancreas is inflamed. Sorry- pancreatitis is my ultimate enemy- I will be going in for surgery in the next couple of weeks to have half of my pancreas removed because of this awful condition. But the good news is that in dogs pancreatitis is usually caused by a high fat diet and is easily managable with low fat foods.
-
Seems to me to be a big coincidence, Daddy had pancreatitis and upped creatinine and now she does.....
Well, atleast they know about the family history now - which i did not until this afternoon.
So, when I call in the morning I will check that they have investigated this as much as they can.
Hope all works out well with your surgery.
Jill

The more information the better you can fight this thing! Teddy and I hope Day-Z can come home soon!
-
My Newf girl, Lucille, had pancreatitis and she recovered...bu t not until she had been on steroids and was on a no fat diet. The vet who treated her said that it is very painful....and had her on a lot of pain medications.
Is that what's happening with Day-z? Why are they keeping her at the vet's? Lucille was really only there to get diagnosed. I just think that our baby's do so much better with their loved ones taking care of them, no matter how good and caring the vet is.
Just my opinion.... ;)
-
They are keeping her at the vets because her stool is still runny and because her creatinine level is still higher than they would like. So, they are keeping her on IV to help her kidneys out.
However, she has been there much longer than I would have liked - but atleast until tomorrow when we see how the blood and stool is.
The trouble is we don't have a baseline creatinine level for her, so maybe it is always elevated.
Anyhow, they can play it their way until tomorrow and then i want to know what time i am collecting her.

Hahaha!!! I completely understand! We speak the same language! So she's still on IV's...that explains it then!
I brought Cowboy home in December still having bloody diarrhea :P :P :P :P but I could tell he was getting depressed. And that DOES NOT aid in healing. It was a tough couple of days, but he bounced back and is grand now!
Be prepared for an army's worth of drugs, if your vet is anything like ours. I had to have them do an hour by hour drug schedule! The old brain just isn't as organized as it used to be!!! ::)
-
Good wishes and prayers go out to Day-z and to you. Hoping for a speedy recovery.
-
Fingers crossed she is well enough to come home with you tomorrow.
And if you come back to the UK with her we will have to get together ;)
-
I would love to meet up with you guys.
I am fairly fired up that unless they convince me she needs to be there then i am bringing her home tomorrow. We'll see how tomorrow goes.
Thanks for your thoughts, hope your baby boy is OK.
-
I hope she's ready to go home tomorrow! Take care.
-
Hurrah - Day-z is home.
Basically the stool is normal but soft, rather than liquid and pupper is home.
She has shaved patches on her front legs where the drip went in and she is now cleaning up. We have given her dinner (special food from vet) and she is now lying in her favourite spot.
We go back in 10 days for more tests on her kidneys.
As you can imagine, i am very, very relieved to have her home - and she seems much better than when she went in.
Thanks for all your support
Jill and Day-z
FYI - $740 more or less....
-
Yeah!!! "happy dance.....happ y dance!!!" YIPPEE! I'm so happy for you! GREAT News! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Did they get any labs back (opps, sorry, lab reports...not retreivers ::)) Any news on what caused it?
Actually that is a remarkably LOW price!! Incredibly low! Amazing! With all she had done and with all the lab tests I would have thought that you have have had to add a zero to the end of that number!!! Good work!
-
Nope all we know is that she has had gastroenteriti s (sp?) and the fact that i insisted upon all test means that we may have spotted kidney disease early on. So, in 10 days more test and ultrasound on kidneys if needed.
Price was not too bad, I agree.
I am so happy to have her home. Ordered her a new bed today as a welcome home.
Thanks
-
I am so pleased she is back home with you. Hopefully she will be as right as rain again soon, and if she does have any kidney problems they can control them with diet or medication :)
-
Glad she's home and I'm glad you were able to catch a problem early on and hopefully control it! Please do keep us posted on how she's doing.
-
Oh, I am so glad that your baby is home with you ;D

Oh I am so glad to hear Day-z is home. I hope she stays well and strong... keep that chin up Day-z!!!!

Hi there,
as an update....
Day-z loves the Purina En food that she has been prescribed and is lively but tired (if that makes any sense). She seems more like her self.
Runny stool though, so pumpkin shopping tomorrow - but she seems fine apart from that - and she is not going very often so think it will be ok.
Thanks for everyones kind thoughts.
