: not your average shelter dog...
: Kermit May 07, 2006, 01:37:20 AM
So this dog was in the shelter down the road for a week. Wouldn't you assume that someone who lost a dog like this would be looking like crazy to find him??? Certainly check the local animal shelter??? ???
Anyways, he's here now, and Will has named him Connor. He is a sweet sweet boy, and seems to be in great health aside from cherry eyes. The shelter told us he is a year old... but... I think he is a baby!!!
Here is where I need help from you Dane folks. This boy weighs about 90 lbs, he's 29 inches give or take, and is really really clumsy... I mean SUPER clumsy... how old does he look? We were thinking around 7 months? Any guesses? Also we need some advice about exercising this kid. He has loads of energy but should we take him on walks? Short ones maybe? I am doing research but I thought if anyone could offer some tips that would be great. We have never had a Dane this young in the house before, and I have read alot, but you know, I listen better when it's actually info that I need!!! :D
So here's CONNOR!!!! :D

Oh my goodness - Connor is GORGEOUS!  I can't believe no one was looking for him, that's sad  :'(

Regardless, I'm glad he's ended up in your hands ;D

Sorry, I don't have any advice for you (or a guess on age) I just wanted to say he's beautiful!  Good luck ;)

I'm definitely no dane expert, but I'd have to say he's definitely less than a year old! I think your guess at 6 or 7 mos. is pretty accurate.

He is so pretty, I am so jealous..

I've found looking at big paws on petfinder, Ontario doesn't have as many in shelters as a lot of the states do.. I wonder if they aren't popular enough for people to get them without research, and them dump them when they get big, or sick, or or..
Or what..

Even though he is incredibly gorgeous, I don't think Connor is a very well bred dane, and being so fined boned it's hard to tell his age.

I think 6-7 months is too young, but one year is definitely too old.

I am concerned that he is so clumsy, wobblers can present itself that way.  I would have him checked out.

Thank you for taking this baby in, I'm sure you will be as lucky as he is!

Funny that you should say that about the bad breeding... he was found in an area of town that is extremely sketchy and known for the kind of breeders who sell their dogs for outrageous prices along the side of the road. >:( This area has a HUGE problem with irresponsible/backyard breeding. It's awful. Interestingly every dog for sale on the side of the road comes from "champion bloodlines". (Yeah right.)

I will have him checked out for wobblers when he goes for his cherry eye surgery. Thanks for the tip. :)

As far as him being lost/stolen/etc, I am suspicious of whoever had him before because his eye condition should have been taken care of by now if he were in the hands of a responsible owner (in my opinion). We have been trying to figure out his story since the moment we met him. I am looking forward to a long discussion with my veterinarian about the eyes and why someone might not have had the surgery done yet.

;D We like him quite a bit so far even though he is a heathen!!!! :D ;)

I put a detailed reply in the cherry eye thread for you, that addresses things including why someone might not have repaired it yet.  :)

Oh, he is gorgeous!  I can't believe someone would let him go and not look for him!

I agree that around 6-8 months sounds about right.

First, he's very handsome!
Second, I admire your courage to adopt a dane with and obvious issue.  I'm a little gun-shy after all the expense I went through getting Einstein in shape.

Congratulation s.

I'm going to have to see your vet records, ma'am!!!  :D :D :D

Connor says a big thank you to everyone who thinks he's good looking! He is settling in just fine over here, he is such a good boy in his crate, loves to run in the back yard, loves to eat, and he even helped me do some gardening yesterday. What a pal! ;D
