Anything Non-Dog Related / just a rant
« on: November 30, 2006, 11:48:09 pm »
ok, so my day has been crazy.  hubby won the scratch off lottery for $102!   last night, diesel ate the $100 bill...  after he stole it off the 5'tall entertainment center.  it's beyond recovery.  then, we took out a loan a WHILE back, which i just found out the bank sent to collections when, REGARDLESS of the fact that there is and has always been more than 3X the amount we owed in the account.  we now have $59 in collections!  mind you, this was supposed to be paid off MONTHS ago, also mind you, the money in the account is in the triple #s and they could have just taken it at any time, but SOMEBODY "forgot" to do that, as we requested months ago.  yeah, "happy holidays from your bank" my a**.  to top it off, my uncle from germany is coming in next week.  he specifically got his flight into ATL so he could come see our house, for the first time in 4 years.  mom decides she's going to stay the night before and leave straight from ATL airport to bring my uncle to MS.  no stop at my house, regardless of the fact he did this strictly for that purpose!  when they come back, my mom is starting a big deal b/c i only have 1 extra room (mind you it's not extra, it's my youngest son's bedroom) and she doesn't want to share it with my uncle... or sleep on the couch... instead she wants me to clear out the finished 2 car garage so she can sleep in it, it has a BUNCH of boxes from our move still in it.  it doesn't have heat, i told her that, but she just can't listen.  why does she have to be so complicated??  oh, did i mention my son painted his room brown (with poop) this morning, or that last night at 1am i had to wake both kids up to bring hubby gas because he "didn't feel like stopping for gas?"  <sigh>

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / when is your dog TOO "healthy"?
« on: November 30, 2006, 06:28:38 am »
my hubby keeps telling me that sheeba is too fat, and that axle is well on his way.  i think they're just fine, but i was wondering what everyone's ideas were on how to tell if your dog is a porker.  thanks!

Akita Discussions / axle's funny story
« on: November 29, 2006, 05:52:04 am »
i just had to share what axle did!  when i was cleaning, i went to put some cleaner (in a bottle like lighter fluid is in) on my kitchen floors while axle was supervising, and when i squeezed the bottle and it went on the floor, axle turned and looked at his pee pee to see if he had an accident, and then looked at me with a disgusted expression and left the kitchen.  if only i could have read his mind, because i'm sure he thought i was going potty in the kitchen!

Yesterday my wife and I came home and found our 7 month old mastiff dead. Our other dog was lying beside her, licking her face. We knew something wasn't right when we open the door to the back yard and called for them and they didn't come running. I went to get them and in the dark shadows I saw my baby lying in a very unnatural position with her buddy right next to her. I tried to think of a story to tell my wife so I wouldn't have to break her heart, but I couldn't come up with one. I told her Roxy was dead. Then I began the process of determining what happened. How could this have happened? She was a healthy happy baby girl, full of life, such a giver of joy.
I tried my best to remain calm and search for a reason that this happened. I had to get my neighbor to help me. It appears that she was strangled by her collar. It had been pulled so tight, with such great resistance that it ripped in half. Both of our dogs wear the "petsafe" invisible fence collars. On these collars is a small black box with two small prongs that protrude about 1/2 inch. The prongs are not sharp but rounded. When we removed Roxy's collar, the prongs were punctured into her neck. There was a good amount of blood. Our other dog had blood all over her neck and face but no wounds. I believe what happened was that Hurley's box became tangled in Roxy's collar and as the two of them pulled and struggled to free themselves, Roxy's collar tighten’d up so tight that it forced the prongs into her neck. I think Hurley continued to pull away and probably dragged Roxy around a little while, creating so much tension that the collar ripped in half on the buckle. It is so brutal to imagine this occurring but I cannot see another way this happened. I am a trained investigator and like to think that I am fairly decent at putting things together. With the way the collar was and the marks it has on it, I feel certain this is what happened.
I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of this happening. I have heard of the collars malfunctioning and burning the dog but Roxy definitely was not burned by the prongs. The Vet looked at her and did not find any evidence of teeth puncture wounds so I know Hurley didn't fight her and do it on purpose.
My wife and I do not want comments on what we "could have" or "should have" done, we are emotionally drained. Believe me, we can't stop thinking about the "what ifs". The hardest thing I have ever had to do is see the pain in my wife’s eyes when I told her the news so please keep the bashing to you.
We would however, like to hear if this has happened before. We would also like to caution others who may have two or more dogs wearing those little boxes. It is possible for them to become tangled together.
Thanks for listening.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / great dane meet up question
« on: November 26, 2006, 10:56:12 pm »
i found a group here in atlanta that does great dane play dates i think once or twice a month.  last month the coordinator told me she had 15 GD's show.  i'm worried though that diesel is still such a puppy that he might aggravate the dogs that have been going for a while, that or just completely run and hide.  does anyone have any tips on how to get him ready to go to the one after the one on dec 2nd? when we go should i keep him on a leash until i figure out how he's going to react to other dogs??

i found this canned dog food that is 95% beef OR chicken, with no by-products, no corn and no white rice.  i'm not sure about the protein and other levels though.  any opinions on this as a supplement instead of the satin balls would be great!

I HAVE 2 FULL BLOODED ST. BERNARDS. ONE IS MALE (TANK) AND ONE IS FEMALE(NALAH) THEY ARE BOTH ALMOST 2 YEARS OLD (NOT RELATED). NALAH IS FIXED AND CURRENT ON SHOTS AND TANK IS CURRENT ON ALL SHOTS BUT IS NOT FIXED. TANK IS VERY DOCILE AND SWEET. NALAH IS A LITTLE MORE PLAYFUL BUT ALSO VERY SWEET. MY NEIGHBOR IS A JERK AND I HAVE TO GET RID OF MY DOGS. I ALSO HAVE A SHEPARD/BOXER MIX (POLLY) WHO IS CURRENT ON SHOTS AND ASLO FIXED. NALAH WEIGHTS APPROX 140-150LBS AND TANK IS APPROX 160-170LBS. POLLY IS APPROX 70LBS. I LOVE MY DOGS VERY MUCH AND THEY NEED A GOOD FOREVER HOME. THEY ARE ALL HOUSE BROKEN AND IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE SAINTS ARE PRIMARILY INDOOR DOGS (ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER). I WOULD LIKE THE SAINTS TO GO TO THE SAME HOME AS THEY HAVE BEEN TOGETHER SINCE THEY WERE 8 WEEKS OLD(BUT I WILL SEPARATE THEM IF I MUST) THE ADOPTION FEE FOR THE SAINTS ARE $100.00 EACH (OR $100.00 IF YOU TAKE BOTH) AND $25.00 FOR THE SHEPARD/BOXER MIX. PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU ARE INTERESTED

Great Dane Discussions / "tea cup" dane?
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:32:59 am »
what does everyone think?  do you think she's full blooded or maybe mixed with something smaller?  or maybe since she was only born in april of '06 maybe the shelter workers don't know much about danes?

Heather is a beautiful Merle, tea cup Dane with natural ears. She was born on 4-26-06. She is smart and confident. She is totally puppy and gets into her share of mischief. She is crate trained. She is going to be a very small Great Dane. So if you love the breed but are wanting a small dane, she is the girl that will steal your heart. She will only be 40-50 lbs as an adult. Please visit our website for more information on how we settle for nothing less then perfect matches for YOU and our dogs! www.allaboutth em.moonfruit.c om We will help you find your heart dog!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / does your dog...
« on: November 22, 2006, 01:58:41 pm »
i was wondering if anyone elses dogs do this.  when we put ours out, sometimes we leave them out for 10 or so minutes to get a quick breather from all the running around.  they now start fights, sound like the worlds coming to an end, but by the time i get to the door all 4 are sitting there looking in the window...  they do this often, kinda like a trick on me to get inside.
