Saint Bernard General Discussions / Thor is gone
« on: January 13, 2007, 04:31:17 pm »
Well I had to find my WONDERFUL st. bernard Thor a new home due to my having back surgery and no one in my family being willing to help me take care of him, or let him in their house.  On the plus side he went to a lady and her husband that already had two saints and a german shepard that live full time in their house.  It still doesn't help, I miss his big understanding eyes, slobbery kisses, and the way he made me smile anytime i felt down.  His new mom said that I can come visit him, take him for a walk etc but I won't; it would just be too hard.  Anyway thanks for listening and goodbye Thor

Hi everybody I REALLY need your help and ideas.  For the past two weeks my back has been really acting up and finally landed me a stay in the hospital for a few days.  Now I'm staying with family and facing the fact that back surgery is in my very near (within a month) future.
Here's the problem I have a wonderful St. Bernard child named Thor who is just over a year and is used to living in the house, or laying out in the yard, now that it's cold lol.  My family won't let me have Thor at their house, not even out in the yard.  For the past two weeks he's been staying at the humane society because they also board dogs but I think that's horribly unfair to him.  I've asked all of my friends that have dogs and they aren't big fans of his drool and shedding.  He is honestly very dry for a saint, mostly he drools after getting a drink lol.  I don't know what to do!  I don't want to give him away permanently but right now I can't take care of him since I'm supposed to be laying in bed or standing up, no sitting, bending, lifting etc.  I would welcome ANY ideas.
He is good with small dogs and cats, shy around big dogs till he gets to know them better.  He knows how to sit and "drop" which is his cue to lay down.  His bad habits are: counter surfing, getting into the garbage but only if he's left alone, and having a lot of "puppy" energy lol.  Overall he's a very good boy but does need to be crated when no one's home. He's UTD on all of his shots and is neutered.
I just hate not having him here with me but I don't want to kennel him for the next month either.  If anyone would take him, I am more than willing to pay for his food and send his crate with him.  Please let me know of ANY ideas.

Games & Jokes / Pet Rules (very funny!)
« on: July 17, 2006, 10:38:07 pm »
To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door -- nose height.

Dear Dogs and Cats:

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep.  It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, THEN go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit and Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it furniture).
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal -- to me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less.
2. Don't ask for money all the time.
3. Are easier to train.
4. Usually come when called.
5. Never drive your car.
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends.
7. Don't smoke or drink alcoholic beverages.
8. Don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions.
9. Don't wear your clothes.
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and ....
1 1. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / BAD NEWS!
« on: June 14, 2006, 10:47:50 pm »
I took Thor in to get nuetered last week, and while he was there the vet did a thorough exam and called me to report that when she was examining his hips she got a pain response on one side, and had crepitus on the other.  I told her to go ahead and take x-rays so that we can know what we're dealing with.
When I went to pick him up she was in emergency surgery but we talked on the phone and yes my worst nightmare is real.  Thor has HD.  He's only 9.5 months old!  I asked what our options are and she told me about two different surgeries, niether of which I can afford, and then said that we could treat it with pain meds/anti inflammitories .  I asked about liver and kidney functions on those meds and she said that blood work would have to be drawn every six months to check their funtion levels.
I asked about diet and she said that she would research it for me.  I asked if there's anything I shouldn't let him do, like climb, jump, run etc and she said that as long as he doesn't appear to be in pain to let him be a puppy but don't force any exercise etc on him.  She also said that swimming would be excellent for him.
I feel like a HORRIBLE mommy!  Thor never appears to be in any pain, and loves to jump up on the bed, and run like a crazy beast.  The vet said that since he doesn't appear to be in any pain to keep him very lean and make sure he gets taken for a walk or two each day, and just monitor him for signs of pain.
This was just SO shocking!  I never expected anything like this!  WOW.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Crates?
« on: June 08, 2006, 11:12:03 pm »
Does anyone know if they make a crate large enough for a saint?  Thor is DESTROYING my house.  He has started pulling up the linoelum in the kitchen, shredded the couch cushion, and when I try to confine him to a room he scratches the door.  I really hate having to leave him tied out all the time when I'm not home but I can't have my house destroyed.  Any ideas?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Guard dog lol
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:33:49 am »
Thor has a new habit: He HAS to sleep outside at night when I'm home and spends the first two hours doing "rounds." He walks around the property watching the horses, looking at the neighbor's yard, watching the highway etc.  If he sees something that's different he stares at it until he determines that it isn't trying to hurt his mommy or his yard.  After this he just sleeps on the deck.  I don't make him sleep outside and usually around two or so, whenever I get up to go to the bathroom, I let him in.  I just think it's funny.
Since I work as an emt for our county ambulance service I work a lot with the local police department.  There's an officer who used to work an an emt and when he gets bored he likes to pull other emt's over.  One night I was in my pj's going home from the store when he pulled Thor and I over. Since I drive a super nice car lol i couldn't open the drivers side door from the inside and couldn't roll down the drivers window.  I rolled down the passenger side window and told him to go to that side and he said "no, I'll just open your door." Well Thor REALLY didn't like that, proceded to jump into the front, onto my lap, growl, bark, and show his teeth. I had to tell the officer to step back and let me out to which he replied he was just bored, and wanted to see my dog but never mind. lol (he owns two chiuhahua's). It made my day to know that he would protect me!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Thor's vet visit
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:14:22 am »
Well we went to the vet the other day and my eight month old furkid had a good visit!  He wouldn't get on the scale until I scooted it away from the wall, and then had to manually put all of him on it lol.  He weighed 113.5lbs.  From there we went to the exam room where he proceded to sleep until the vet came in lol.  I told the vet that he's been digging at his ears and has a funny crusty bump on his head; I had looked and couldn't find any evidence of mites.  Well after lab work and much squirming on Thor's part the vet concluded that he had seasonal allergies hence the crusty bump, and an ear infection.  It took a vet assistant, myself, and the vet to convince him to sit still while he got drops put in his ears lol.  He made the funniest noise afterward!  It was this deep throaty noise.  I asked the vet "what was that?"  He said it was a "WOW! That feels great but kind of hurts." At home he sits great for his ear drops and antiboitics lol.  I guess he just doesn't care for that particular vet.

Food Discussion & Information / help????
« on: January 22, 2006, 01:30:37 am »
K, I've read everything on these boards about feeding raw and barf and I did it for awhile with my last saint and loved it but found it to be cost prohibitive.  I really want to go back to it for Thor but I need some ideas on different "recipes/variety" for him.  Does anyone feed their furkids venison?  Is it safe to do this?  I have a ton of deer hunters in my area and am wondering can dogs be fed the leftover stuff that they leave on the deer that we don't eat?  Also can cooked oatmeal be used to make breakfast patties?  Thor is only five months old (in a few days) and wieghs 68lbs.  I've read that puppies should be fed more than once a day so please help me out with the math.  How do i know that he's getting the right protien etc?  I told a coworker who's a vet student about feeding him the raw and barf diets and she about died saying that the bones splinter even if they're raw and how kibble is much much better.  I thought she was nuts.  Anywho please help me figure out the math and a "menu" for Thor.

Thanks

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I love this board!
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:56:22 pm »
I just wanted to let everyone on here know that this board has got to be the nicest one on the net.  I have been having problems with one of my horses and have been talking to people on a breed specific board and man have they gotten nasty about it.  Telling me that I should have him gelded (neutered) now if not before and that that would solve a lot of his anti social behavior.  Or that I shouldn't expect this and that etc.  GGGGRRRRRR I hate it! Thank god for nice people out there such as yourselves.

Big Dogs with Jobs / anyone do tracking?
« on: January 06, 2006, 07:45:12 am »
Does anyone on here do tracking with their big kids?  I would love to get Thor started in it, as he doesn't know it yet but he's going to be a search and rescue dog.  That and I would love for him to find something more than my house cat, shoes, or stray piece of horse poop that escaped from the pasture lol.   If you do can you please give us a starting point/advice.
Thanks

Saint Bernard General Discussions / help/ideas?
« on: January 05, 2006, 03:02:03 am »
Hey everyone Thor and I are well, just need a little advice.  Thor was not socialized by his "breeder" (I use that term very loosely) and I got him when he was 12 weeks old.  Well he has some aggression issues.  He gets growly and snappy when introduced to new dogs.  Only certain new dogs though i.e. the jumpy, excited, let's play variety.  He's now 16 weeks old and goes to day care twice a week when my schedule allows and he's doing well there.  He also goes to my coworker's house when I have to work and loves to rough house and play with her doberman puppyn and her toy rat terrier.  Some dogs he's great off the bat with, and others he's not.  Usually after about five minutes he's ok and gets along great and then prceeds to play.  Any ideas other than going to day care, and on Sunday we'll start obediance school.  I just want him to be a happy out going puppy that I can take to the dog park etc and not have to worry about him getting aggressive with other dogs; with people he's fine.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Need a name
« on: January 02, 2006, 03:49:50 am »
Hey everyone, I'm so glad to have finally found a board just for saints!  I currently have a four month old boy "Thor" who is my spoiled rotten child lol.  He is absolutely beautiful and so very well behaved.  Other than Thor I have a Bichon Frise "Ellie" two horses, one rabbit, three hermit crabs and a cat.  Anywho, I am getting ready to register Thor and need a good registered name.  I don't care for his parents' names so I don't want to include them.  I do plan on trying to show him.  At this point it will depend on a couple of things:  the rest of his right lip turns black, and that his right eye doesn't droop/show the red part.  Sometimes it will droop and other times it won't.  His other eye doesn't droop at all so I'm hoping it wont as well; neither one of his parents' eyes drooped.
If you have any suggestions for a long show name please let me know.  As soon as I can I will get pictures up of him.  Thanks !
