What a fun day!  Iwish there were enough newfies in Kentucky to make a play date..... heck, just having enough people who liked any kind of dog would be nice.   How long does it take to get the sand out of the newfs?

We finally got Webster home.  He is so cute.  Still a bit shy and sleeps like a baby, but he is a bit more boisterous each time he wakes up.  He made the 4 hour drive home like a champ and Riley (3 y/o golden) is quite keen on him already.  I had hoped for a gentle first meeting and it was perfect.  He is asleep now in his crate, will take pictures this evening.  Thankfully, I have the next 2 1/2 weeks off from work.  My goal is to get him potty trained by then.  Wish me luck!

In defense of the ProPlan though, I raised my first newf on it and he lived just shy of 14 years with nary a problem.  I have a 3 year old goldie on it now, with no probs. I think perhaps good skin, hips an coat must be a mix of environment, food and genetics. Perhaps what works for one doesn't necessarily work for all?

I have always used ProPlan dog food.  I just got a 20 pound bag of the  ProPlan large breed puppy food, and now I have this niggling in the back of my brain that says maybe I am not supposed to use large breed puppy food for Newfies.  Has anyone ever heard of this, or am I just being paranoid or just remembering wrong.  (the latter happens a lot!) What do the rest of you Newfie folks feed your Newfs?

Again, thanks for the ideas.  I hope to have everything ready by the w/e.  One would think the Pres of the US was coming! I have cleaned house top to bottom, cooked meals in advance, straightened up the gardens and done the yard work.  I even planned my (minor) surgery so I could be off for 2-3 weeks with this new arrival.  I have had a newfie in the past, I can't wait to have another!

Thanks everyone.  I really think it will go well.  I just want to make it as easy for Riley as I can.  Just 3 MORE DAYS til I get Webster!!!

Newfoundland Discussions / how do you introduce a new puppy?

We have Riley, a  3 y/o neutered golden retriever.  Wonderful, gorgeous and smart, but a wee bit spoiled.  I am getting Webster, an 8 wk old newf puppy this w/e.  Any suggestions on the introduction?  Riley has been around puppies and is pretty good with them as long as they leave his lips and feet alone. I am so hoping this will be a GOOD experience for all of us.  Thanks for your input.

Golden Retriever Discussions / bring home a new puppy
« on: September 20, 2005, 08:36:33 am »
We have a 3 1/2 year old goldie.  Wonderful dog, gorgeous, smart and well mannered and more than a wee bit spoiled.  This w/e we will be bringing home an 8 week old newfie puppy.  I'm not sure what to expect.  Riley has been around other puppies and is very good with them as long as they leave his feet and his lips alone, (and they go home at the end of the day).  Do goldies take to new additions pretty well/easily?

My goldie is just hairy.  He gets raked, slickered and brushed every single day and still, if he just walks by you a cloud of air fills the air! He eats a good premium dog food, looks gorgeous with all the grooming, but he always has this poof of hair falling around him.  He does this every day of the year with a few exceptions, like when there is snow on the ground or it is belowing freezing outside.
