I have concerns for both sides- not knowing the breeders I can't form an opinion but certainly do detect the roller coaster ride on your side  In the past few weeks you have changed your mind several times- first it was Gilligan then it was another puppy in the litter then it was 2 puppies in the litter and then it was back to Gilligan again NOW it 2 pitbulls???

You do need to have a good relationship with whoever you get a dog from- that is indeed important And you need to make a decision that is comfortable for you.  Perhaps you should step back a little and focus on what you really want out of pet ownership.  There are tons of dogs out there needing homes I'm sure that there is one for you too.

Depends on the breed  Most of your giant breeds are not considered to be fully grown until 4 or more years  Although they get most of their height in the first year-year and 1/2 a lot of their bulk is not put on til much later

Littermates may have a tendency to bond more with each other and not their human owner.  Generally it is not recommended HOWEVER can be done.  Especially if the owner is able and willing to give each pup a lot of individual attention.  With you being home 24/7 you are in a situation where you could pull this off.

Your main problems are what to do with the dogs when you return home since you already know there is a problem  AND do you really want to go through a double puppyhood?  One pup is plenty of mess and trouble  Two is double that and not for the faint of heart.  Pups are cute but can be very destructive as a team and with you being in an apartment you don't have the invaluable fenced yard where they can burn off some energy.

Its not fair to the dog- a home where he will get more attention and interaction with his family is better for the dog.  Your commitment needs to be for him to have a happy life and if that is not with you then so be it.  Four dogs and a young child is a lot to juggle and it sounds like he is not getting his needs met.  With careful screening you may be able to find a home for him that will give a lifetime commitment.

Big dogs often have very little hair under their underarms due to constant motion. Another cause of dry listless hair is spending too much time indoors during the winter, heated air is very drying.

You have to be careful with low thyroid- it is not uncommon for there to be literally no symptoms other than a poor hair coat.  I have had 2 Petits that i had to demand a thyroid test be done cause the vet couldn't see any symptoms to indicate a problem.  Both were severely hypothyroid  One dog just had a dry coat and dry skin the other had significant hair loss and was itching like crazy but no other signs.  a third owned by a friend only had a personality change- her hair coat was fabulous (the dog not the friend :>)  If I have any doubt I have it drawn- it only costs $40 and if nothing else it eliminates that as a source of the problem.

Not a good idea unless you plan on getting one or both neutered immediately.  The comment about your Newfie getting a big head if he is neutered makes no sense -although some breeders do recommend altering at a later age to prevent orthopedic problems- the size and shape of his head comes from the parents, plain and simple.  I'm not sure what you mean by 'they will travel' but you really should have a fenced yard to contain your dogs if that is what you are referring to.  Usually but not always male-female combos will work but it all depends on the individual personalities.  You should reconsider on this and be sure other plans are in place before getting two unaltered pets.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: How Much do you Feed?
« on: January 11, 2009, 12:43:33 am »
I agree with DaneInsane  Some dogs don't do well on certain foods even though the food is known to be high quality.  and at 6 cups he should be at least maintaining.  But different dogs do have different needs  I do have some Pyrs here (a breed that has a notorious low metabolism) that are getting the equivalent of 6 or more cups a day and some that are doing well at 3 cups a day.  For weight gain I usually add just carbohydrates and fat to their food to up the calorie count- just like in people! I do that with supplementing (doggy stew) but you can do it by changing dog food as well if you are not inclined to add toppings.

As an aside have you had his thyroid checked?  A major culprit in hair and skin problems
