Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Why use a crate?
« on: January 11, 2006, 11:06:50 am »
Forgive me for asking, but what are the reasons for crating a dog. I have never used a crate, so am generally interested. With all my dogs I have left them free to roam although they are restricted to the rear of the house. I always make sure anything chewable that shouldn't be chewed is removed and accepted that it was my fault if it got chewed. They were left with plenty of toys to play with.

In addition I have always accepted that accidents happen and usually find that it takes about 4 weeks at the outside before they are house trained - both my dogs go to the back door and woof if they need to go out. I have always however allowed for the expense of getting the local carpet cleaner in to do the carpets every couple of weeks while they are house training. If I catch a dog chewing something it shouldn't it gets a firm NO and given something it can chew, if it continues, it gets a No and put outside and ignored for 20 minutes (Newfies do not like being ignored).

To me both my current dogs are quite happy without a crate. At present Bell sleeps outside in her kennel - she asks to go out to bed about 10.00p.m. and I won't see her again till morning. Hovis on the other hand sleeps inside on the floor (I suspect when I go to bed this changes to the couch although I havn't caught her yet) Hovis is a bit of a wimp though,  her coat is thinner than Bells so she may well enjoy the central heating. I expect in summer both will sleep outside.

This brings me back to the original question, why use a crate? what are the advantages? does it benefit the dog?

Your dogs are incredible!!! Are they show dogs???

I have shown Bell and Hovis two or three times but first and foremost they are family members. Bell also carts. Hovis who is not full grown carries a backpack, to get her used to the idea of carting. I'm hoping to do water work with them this year.

I am more concerned with having fun with the two of them than showing, carting or swimming so I tend to mix what we do depending on what I feel like doing. The dogs do however swim every day and this keeps grooming to a minimum so I only really brush them for a show.

The too Infinity pic was sheer luck, I was holding the camera with one hand and throwing a stick with the other (not easy with an SLR). The full size version looks a whole lot better, I've just hung an 8 x 10 version on the wall.

If it helps at all, when Bell was a puppy she attacked the floor mop whilst I was cleaning the floor (being a man I hate to admit doing this). She disappeared with the wipe and ate it!! She's still here over 18 months later though it might explain some of her zany behaviour.  :)

Thanks for all your lovely comments and praise. This is Bell and Hovis's usual morning walk and I usually have at least one "wish I'd brought the camera moment" on it. but I'm usually half awake and being nagged by the girls wanting to be off and out so don't usually take the camera.

I'm hoping for some snow this year, I've been trying for quite a while to get a decent yorkshire dales + newfies christmas card and I have this idea involving Bell a cart and christmas presents. hopefully one day. :)

Its a nice day, I'm up late, so rather than waste it I took the camera when I walked the dogs.

Here are the results......
