Mixed Breed Discussion / Finally!! Shasta has arrived!!
« on: October 29, 2006, 03:57:57 pm »
My husband and Shasta arrived home on Saturday.
The HS guessed her age at about 1 year and if the Lab in her is mixed w/ a large or XL dog, then she should have about another year to finish growing.  She weighs approx. 45-50 lbs, 26" tall and very thin.  She was at the HS for about 6 weeks and of course didn't get the best nutrition for a growing girl.  She was spayed and we had her declaws removed from her rear legs while she was under.  Recovery for her has been practically non-existant.  Her only issue is food protection, which is expected with stray/homeless dogs.  I believe she was dumped cuz she does well on a leash (w/minor adjustment to the Halti) and has had zero accidents in the house (no crate...free reign over night and a couple hours this morning by themselves)...their loss, our gain!!  She's a sweetheart and loves hugs.  The picture above shows her next to Mika... their feet are about the same size.  Nobody wanted her because they felt she would get too big... also our gain.  Don't know what she's mixed with, but looking at her feet... could be Dane, Saint, Newf.  She's longer than she is tall, her hair is medium length, but has wavy, longer hair on her back.  She also has the rolly-polly loose skin on her shoulder area... you can see it shift from side to side when she trots around.  She also had those huge, dangly dewclaws on her rear legs.  We already love her and she's a part of the family pack now.

Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: "Turkey" needs your prayers
« on: October 22, 2006, 06:22:29 pm »
Just got caught up... I'm so sorry about the accident!! :'(
It was great to here that Turkey is doing as well as possible... sounds like you're prepared to take excellent care of her during the recovery.
Prayers and positive thoughts for Turkey, you and your family today and throughout her recovery!!

Just wanted to apologize in regards to the late post for the "Fun with Pictures"... but, we're getting a new addition to our family.  Here's the story...
We didn't plan it at all.  I've been on the look-out for a male OEM or Saint, but fate had something else planned for us on Fri/Sat.  We went to my mother-in-laws (3 hours away)to put in a new floor, chop wood, etc.  Well, Friday, the kids and I rounded up 7 feral kittens on her property and took them to the Humane Society... and of course, I had to take a look!  A young lab mix w/ gigantic feet caught my attention.  Sweet, sweet, sweet... but, I had to be brave and left...  Saturday, we caught two more feral kittens and while my husband and his mother took care of the kittens at the HS, the kids and I checked "Shasta" out again.  We spent some time with her and ended up buying her, then we found out she was on her last leg there.  She was "too big" for everyone else who was interested.  Not for us!!!  Unfortunately, we have no pics... I didn't have my phone or camera w/ me...Murphy's law.  She has to be spayed first, so my wonderful husband is driving another 3 hours on thursday to pic her up and then back another 3 hours.... then we will have pics.

Mika does this sometimes, too...usually when we're laying on the bed and she gets overwelmed with excitement and she needs to do somthing more than just lick your face off.  I've heard it called "flea bites", I'm guessing cuz it similar to them nibbling at fleas.

That's too sad!! :'(
I think his claim to "shoot them so they don't starve to death", was a very, very poor excuse! >:(
Actually, there is no excuse for his actions!!
Number one... No/Zero guns on school property.  Number two... just plain stupidity!! >:(  There are too many options for orphaned animals these days.
I'm glad he resigned and I hope he is charged to the fullest extent.
.... just my opinion!

Food Discussion & Information / Info on Bloat!
« on: October 08, 2006, 05:12:23 am »
Wondering if anyone has any views on "Bloat".  This is how we lost our beloved Appollos and want to keep it from happening again.  We have always feed our dogs w/elevated food dishes... we know all about the risk factors, narrow  & deep chests, etc., but now they say it is a contributer to bloat.  This is the first I've heard of this study.  Has anyone changed the way they feed their BD?

The link to the article below...very long, so I snipped a few sections...

Canine bloat serious threat to some breeds
Article Last Updated:10/01/2006 08:20:59 AM PDT

CANINE bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is the No. 1 cause of death for several large and giant dog breeds.

The breed with the highest average lifetime likelihood of a bloat episode is the great Dane, at 42.4 percent.

Other breeds at higher-than average risk include the bloodhound, Irish wolfhound, Irish setter, Akita, standard poodle, German shepherd, and boxer. Other deep-chested breeds and deep-chested mixed-breed dogs are also at higher risk.

In a study of more than 1,900 dogs representing 11 different breeds at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, several risk factors were identified.

One traditional preventative has been to raise the height of food and water bowls, but this was found to actually increase risk by 110 percent

We started using the Halti head harness for the girls about a month ago.  Sera was a puller and we took walks so seldom because of this.  Now, it is such a pleasure walking them, we walk once, if not twice, a day.  These are great!!!  ...after they get used to them.
