as far as treating with epsom salts is concerned, could you draw up a shallow bath in the tub and have him just stand in there, if you sat right next to him and patted him a lot? My only other idea is that my guy Sammy tends to be a lot more laid-back at night, when he's really tired or maybe half-asleep. What if you made sure Boston got a good long energetic day in, and then tried to work on the foot in the evening when he's all tired out?

good to know, thanks! I should definitely be starting up grad school full-time this summer, it's just a question of location! And at that point, I'm definitely going to need to figure out some help for Sammy. He's so spoiled right now, having me around all the time! I wish I could just bring him with me everywhere, to class, etc.!

Oh, that's so sad! Maybe I can understand that rule under certain circumstances, but it's such a bummer given all his hard work! It is good he got to show, though. Might be a while before he catches up in size to a wolfhound!

I know nothing about showing, but I don't understand why he couldn't enter with his own dog??

yes, his fur seems to be staying curly. His dad was kind of curly too, so I'm assuming it'll stay that way. It's especially curly right after he's had a bath- a bath makes him look like he gained about 15 pounds!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / so many Berners!

Yesterday I was in Boston (Charlestown, actually) for an interview, and while walking to the building from where I parked, I saw TWO berners! So exciting for me! I got a chance to talk to the first and his owner. It was funny, he was about two years old, and 108 pounds, so probably a little bigger than I'm guessing Sammy will eventually get. But, he had puppy fur! The owner said she figured he would stay that way- he was all fluffy and soft. Sammy, on the other hand, has shiny, curly fur at seven months. Pretty different looking!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Kongs,What to stuff them with?

Sammy loves apple slices. I've never put them in the kong, but can't see why it wouldn't work!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: 7 month old eats too fast
« on: February 01, 2008, 09:10:48 am »
Ha! I knew it when I saw your other post! Sammy is seven months old, and pretty routinely makes himself throw up from eating too fast. He gets so excited his whole body kind of jumps around, the muscles getting all tense, and he scarfs his food down in seconds and then licks the bowl and then goes and licks the bowl of my parents' dog. My vet said to just do what you're already doing- feed him his meal gradually in small amounts, and give him more when he's finished a tiny bit and had a short break. Honestly, if I put something else in the bowl to slow him down, I'd be afraid he'd eat it, or break his teeth on it or something. He is truly a crazy man when it comes to food. I've also tried soaking the food, which doesn't slow him down a whole lot, so i guess that's not super helpful. I think i read somewhere that soaking the food makes them less likely to bloat, but I'm not sure about that at all.

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Need help with food :(

As for a single-protein source food, I've got Sammy on the Canidae Lamb and Rice. I'm going to switch him over to the Canidae all life stages with multiple protein sources after this bag, but the lamb and rice sounds like it might work well for you. Sammy loves it. A lot. I wonder if your berner is the same as him, scarfing down food like there might never be food again?? I'm hoping he'll grow out of the food craziness.

While I was in France, Sammy was eating Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult Lamb Meal & Rice Formula, which was by far the best-looking food option I could locate for him. I can't speak for Nutro as a whole, but the large breed lamb and rice doesn't have corn gluten, or mysterious protein sources as far as I can tell. It worked really well for him- he loved it, and  had no GI problems on it or anything. Now I've got him on Canidae because I heard so many good things, and he's reacting really well to that one too, but I personally had good luck with Nutro, and don't think it was bad for Sammy. If you're nervous though, there are certainly a ton of foods that folks on this board like a lot!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: New Dog
« on: January 31, 2008, 08:57:03 pm »
well this may not be super helpful, but I recently came with my bernese puppy Sammy to spend some time visiting my parents and their nine-year-old golden, Maize. At first, Maize was NOT a fan of Sam- she'd always been an only dog, and you know, she's the boss of her house, and older, and set in her ways, and frankly has never been crazy about other dogs. But from that inauspicious start, they're now great friends, and Maize is the bigger instigator of the two of their little wrestling matches. So I don't know if you can predict easily how well two dogs will get along from a first interaction. I tend to think you'll be just fine, but I don't really know anything about a pyr personality.

Oh, I'm sorry you both have to go through this. But it is at least good that by summer, it will be in the past!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: sudden severe lameness- UPDATE
« on: January 31, 2008, 08:39:23 pm »
So, good news from today's x-rays! The vet thinks that Sammy has pano. I'm thrilled! All of his  joints looked great on the films, and definitely no broken bones. The only thing there was evidence of was some ossification (I think I'm using the right term) in his right ulna- basically a spot on the bone in the xray. So that's pano, and he's got deramaxx (deracoxib) to take for five days, and we're hopeful that the limp will clear right up. Thank you all so much for you advice- just to be sure I did have him checked for Lyme, and it's good to know that's not the issue. Also looks like his shoulders and elbows are well-formed, with no evidence at all of OCD or dysplasia. Yay! The main tragedy to come out of all this is that he had not been allowed to eat all day, which is making him one UNHAPPY pup!
