Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: Trainer?
« on: October 18, 2007, 08:38:21 am »
I'm not sure what a good rate for obedience training would be.  I am involved with an organization that teaches all sorts of obedience for obedience titles.  Novice, Rally, and utility training and even tracking are some of the courses they teach.  Now for a 6 week puppy basic course it was $110.  Then the next pre-novice course was 6 weeks for $95 and the classes ran about that much for each class following.  They were an hour long and basically the handlers were taught how to instruct the dogs to perform and exercise and that included a heal position and heal forward on a loose lead, sit, stay, come, down, short and long finishes but keep in mind this was all for obedience competitions and it's a bit more formal.  Though I do not compete as Gracie just does not have the energy level I think is necessary (I think it bores her)for a good competition I personally think that obedience is ideal and helps to reinforce the bond but consistency is the key.  I don't think to put a time frame on the activity to learn is appropriate.  You or the dog may not quite understand right off the bat and that is where repetition will be the key.  So if it takes 5 minutes, 2 hours or one year that will be up to you and the dog understanding each other and walking on a leash correctly in your opinion.  Oh and if it were me who was considering his service I might get a reference from this person and watch how he interacts with your pet before you commit to anything. Good luck with the training and keep us posted on how it goes.

Food Discussion & Information / Yet another dog food question...
« on: October 17, 2007, 01:34:48 pm »
I just thought I would get your input on a food that a co-worker is considering.  His yellow lab, Tex, is currently on Science Diet and of course I challenged him to look at and compare the ingredients using the information Holly has so graciously given us from her food dissertation.  Thanks again Holly.  Well he has read it and has decided to switch to Blue Dog food and also supplement with Dinovite

http://www.dinovite.com/

Donovite is also something I'm curious about as well.  Would it be necessary to supplement the food if they are already getting enough supplements from their food?

Okay here are the ingredients of the Blue Dog Food and also has anyone heard of or used this brand?

My thoughts are will that guy.  It sure sounds like he's got some fight left in him and how adorable would he be with a cart?  Though I too hope he never needs one but in the off chance he does then I sure hope he gets a very nice styling one...  If you do get a chance to see him then give him a big hug and tons of slobbery kisses from my crew..  Get better Rocco!!!   :-* :-* :-*

Oh what a brat.  I often wonder if they have a way of knowing that we have something planned and the house needs to be a little bit sparkle'er than usual which suddenly throws them into total primal mode and therefor have an overwhelming desire to funk up the place.....  Seriously.  What is that?  Take our house for example.  On Thursday nights we invite guest over to watch bad B movies because we think they are funny.  For about 2 weeks now it is as though someone suddenly has a case of the toot shoots or very bad gas right around the time the guests are arriving.  It's mutiny I say.  They are totally trying to control our parties.  Sorry for the laundry day hone..  And as for you Ranger..  I'm on to you guys.  I see what's going on.....  You take it easy on your mom.  Especially with all those girls coming over to visit.  Trust me when I say it's in your best interest to be a well mannered gentleman. Oh think about all the kisses and hugs you'll get for being so stinking sweet.  Oh and handsome of course.  Be good...

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: 4 months old today!
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:05:01 am »
I weighed him today and he's 34 pounds (at least. He wouldn't sit still for more than 3 seconds.) Does that sound right to all you pyr owners (or former pyr owners) out there? Just want to make sure he is staying on track ;)

I did the whole stand on the scale, then stand on the scale with the dog (as him standing on the scale himself just does not work).....and My boyfriend and I were 42 pounds heavier with him.

So, if that little trick really works, he weighs 42 pounds! That sounds much better than 34 (but once again like i said, I couldnt get him to keep all four feet on that scale!)

He sure is a handsome dude.  That is fur sure..  I love the shots you got of him.  My boyfriend and I did the same thing with our Gracie when she was a puppy and we couldn't get her to sit still on the scale.  We did that up until she hit the 60 pound mark and by then our backs were not having it.  Fortunately the vet's office was always always willing to let us use their scale to monitor her weight.

The teething part is also trying.  I just think it looks funny when the grown up teeth come in because they are so white and pretty but also way too big for their mouths. hahaha.  It's cute.  Good luck with that one.

Happy 4 month birthday sweetheart.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

..oh wait I'm suppose to give my opinion for just one?  Crud, I'm sorry but I'm going to be pretty worthless to you there. I'm just going to have to say that your choice will be the perfect one no matter which pup you get the pleasure of keeping.  I do not envy you on that decision.   ;)  Those are some cute stinking puppy dogs.  All of them.

Hi there.  I really do wish I knew.  A vet is for sure going to help guide you and your guy to the problem.  Good luck and we hope your lab feels better fast.  Get well buddy.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Puppy shedding, itching, dandruff
« on: October 16, 2007, 07:17:50 am »
Hi Sadie.  I'm Misty and I'm sorry to hear your pup is itchy.  I personally think this could actually be a number of things.  Allergies included.  Our vet has suggested we give our dogs Benadryl if we believe they are having an over histamine problem and that seems to work very well.  Also, I would consider the possibility of him blowing out his summer coat and getting ready for the winter.  Gracie had an issue where she had a lot of dandruff and appeared to be very itchy.  We talked to the vet about that and due to the weather change at the time he thought maybe that was the problem.  There was also a bit more ear wax than usual and her eye's also had more discharge that usual.  He gave her meds for the eye's to prevent infection and we made up a home remedy ear cleaning solution to help clear out some of the over produced ear wax.  In addition to that we bathed her with a mild oatmeal puppy shampoo for sensitive skin (BPO recommended) and she stopped with all of the itching..  Perhaps he is adjusting to the food or reacting to it. If he's bitting his feet that would be more of an indicator of food allergies but again, I'm not expert so keep researching and talk to your vet.  I think it could be one of or a number of things.  But my advise to you is to keep a close eye on him.  If he begins to scratch and creates a hot spot then I would take him in to the vet.  One more thing.  If he has not had his flea treatment perhaps that could be the problem.  We live in TX and the fleas this year are out of control.  It's very important that we make sure they get the treatments regularly otherwise they will totally take over.  The pups itch like crazy when that happens.  I hope you get to the bottom of this and it all subsides quickly.  I apologize too that this wasn't very much help but I'm sure you will have a lot more advice on what to watch or look for with your guy.  He is very cute but the way.  I hope to see many more pictures of that guy.  Good luck to you both.

Hello and welcome.  I'm Misty and my pup's are listed in my signature.  The only experience I've had with a scent hound is with a beagle I once had.  As I never had experience with the breed and with a scent hound I didn't trust myself to ever let her off a leash.  You will receive a lot of great advice here and I'm sorry I can't be of much help with this particular subject.  I just wanted to introduce myself and welcome you and your girls to the board.  I've always loved blood hounds and I look forward to seeing more pictures and reading stories about your girls.  Again, welcome.

Oh boy.  What an adventure that guy has been on.  You're an angel because if you think about the fact that if he had not received any sort of medical attention just who knows what condition he may be in?  I'm sending tons of get better vibes to him and my thoughts are with all of you pulling for him and especially him.  Get better Rocco.  You have plenty more adventures go on out on the property you live on.  Just next time you do make sure you leave a bread trail to remember how to get back home....  Feel better fast.  :-*
