Here are a few pictures of Charlie - our loveably oversized Golden.  Yes, that's a couch in the background.... .....and, yes, he does occupy all of it  ,-)

Here's a few pictures of our dogs that have gone to the bridge.

"3-bits" - the Airedale/mix and "Packer" the Rottie.  3-bits was our first.  She'd been abused and was very shy at first.  She was 8 when we got her.  Packer was also about 8 and had been mistreated, but less so.  Both were GREAT dogs and we miss them every day.

The second picture gives you an idea of Chalie's size - that is a couch behind him.  He completely fills a 2 cushion couch/loveseat.

Hi Doug, real nice to have you here. your baby is such a handsome man, it is sad sad when you find a dog and then you realize that there is noone looking for them.

We are in the same situation here, a week ago we found a black mix breed, in the middle of an intersection, late late at night, she was about to get run over, she was real timid and didnt want us to touch her, but after a long times coaxing, we managed to get her into the car. she is only a young dog like 6 or maybe 7 months old. We have had flyers up, ads in all the papers here, called the shelters, the vets and done everything we can think of, but still no luck, I still hope that somone will call and say it is their lost dog and how happy they are to find her, but hope is starting to fade a little.

Some people just shouldnt get dogs. Good on you for rescuing this beautiful boy. Please post more pics

Marit

Thanks, Marit!  Good luck finding that pup's owners - the folks that found Charlie sure tried their best for several weeks.  They would have kept him, but they already had 3 (another GR, a black lab, and a basset).  What I don't get is the attitude of the guy whose name was on the tags.  Personally I don't think he "sold" Charlie at all, I think he dumped him.

I'll add a few pics.  The lovely cat w/antlers is "Ricky" our 7+ yo orange tabby.  We found him at a local laundromat, most likely dumped, definitely malnourished.

We live about a block from a fire house and when the whistle goes off and the sirens blare, Packer (our Rottie) used to sing.  If he was outside he'd get the whole neighborhood going!!

Thanks everyone!

Charlie is a big baby and a real affection hound (is that an AKC breed yet?).  It is really hard for me to believe that someone threw him away like a used diaper, but I guess it happens.

Charlie is a big bundle o'love and likes nothing better than just hanging our or playing a game of fetch the Kong.

Heather - the idea of the dog ramp is a good one.  I've got a nice, long, 2X8 that I use to load my dirt bike into my truck.  I'm sure Charlie is graceful enough to walk that plank  ,-)

If he can't move and needs to go to the vet when I'm not around, we have friendly neighbors who'll lend a hand.

Thanks,

Thanks to everyone!

Re: size - I grew up with a female rough coat Saint.  She was small-ish at about 125.bs.

Charlie is our 3rd rescue/pound dog.  We adopted an 8yo Airedale mix (passed after 3 yrs), and 8 yo male Rottie (passed after 2 years) and now Charlie  ,-)

After Packer (the Rottie) died my wife said that she had only 2 requests if we got another dog: first it had to get along with her 14 yo DLH cat (Charlie does) and second she had to be able to get the dog in the car by herself if the dog was sick and couldn't get in w/o assistance.  Well......errr r.......one out of two ain't bad?

Now she's gotten used to Charlie's.....errrr... ..massiveness she's open to the idea of a big dog  ,-)

Hi all -

I just joined BPO as my wife and I are thinking of finding a rescued Saint as a companion for us and a buddy for our GR - then I saw the GR board!!

We adopted Charlie several months ago.  He's about 7 yo, male, neutered, found running along a rural highway.  All attempts to contact his POs failed, so we took him in.

He definitely fits on the BPO theme - Charlie is 29" at the base of the neck and 118lbs.

> Haircuts are not good!! They do protect from the sun and heat too!!

We trimmed Charlie's feathers just a bit, but left all the length and density of his natural coat for that very reason.

> Be sure to provide your future Saint with shade and lots of water.

Yup.  He/She will have a large dish (Charlie's holds a gallon).  In the summer I usually add a few ice cubes to the water in the AM and refill at lunch.

> If you make another dog house with AC, I am sure that he will use it if it gets too hot.

You'd think - but Charlie seems to prefer sitting in the rain and getting soaked instead of going inside his house.  I guess Goldens are strange - our other dogs had no trouble figuring out what the dog house was for  ,-)

> He also loves to swim, so we let him get a good swim in at least once a day in the summer months.

Great idea!  GRs are supposed to love water and we live right near a lake, so if we adopt a Saint they can go swimming together.

> In the daytime he prefers to hang out in the house away from the heat.

I'd like to, but as noted I'd be just a tad concerned about the welfate of our ancient DLH cat.  For the time being, our pooches have to hang out in the back yard while we're gone.

> And for thinking about rescuing a Saint---DO IT!!!! It will be the most rewarding experience ever.
> We rescued our boy one year ago, and I will never be without one of these amazing dogs ever
> again in my life!!

If we get one my wife and I would only consider adoption/rescue.  All our dogs have been adoptions/rescues: the 8 yo leggy Airedale/mix, the 8+ yo greying Rottie, and now Charlie - a 120lb 7yo GR.

Thanks again,
doug

Hi there

>AC in the dog house?Love to be your pooch.

Well technically it's a swamp cooler, but it's pretty close.  Home Depot had "portable" swamp coolers (small units, the size of a window mount A/C) on sale so I bought one and built a platform so it blows into the dog house.  I did insulate the 2X2 walls and panel the inside.

> Ive also seen at petsmart cool beds that stay cool for your dog.I think they run about $80.Good
> luck with your saint.

I'll check out the cool beds if/when we adopt.

Thanks,
doug

Hello all

I just joined BPO at the suggestion of some friends over at MSN.

My wife and I are thinking of adopting a Saint rescue, but I'm a little concerned about the weather here.  We live in Idaho near Boise and it gets pretty warm in the summer months.  I'd like to hear from some of you who have Saints (rough or smooth coats) in hot weather - what special accomodations do you make?  Haircuts?  Any info would be appreciated.

Our dogs are outside while we're at work and inside at all other times.  Charlie, our GR, has A/C in his dog house - insulated, paneled, shingled, etc. (but he still prefers to stay in the yard, by the house, in the shade, etc).  I could easily build another house w/A/C, but I'd be more worried about a Saint not using it than I am about Charlie not using it.

Charlie is outside while we're away because he may get a little too rambunctios (sp?) with our 14 yo DLH (who is an indoor only kitty).

Any suggestions you could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks,
doug
