General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Wobbler's Syndrome
« on: June 13, 2006, 12:26:23 am »
I haven't posted in forever! I love the changes to the site. I need help...My Marley has Wobbler's syndrome. She just turned one on May 18th. We have been doing so well. Gandalf even love's her now too! She was only 60lbs when we adopted her in January, and now she is up to 100! I was ever so careful to not give her too much nutrition etc. Anyway, this is the first time my vets have seen Wobbler's here in Po-Dunk Alaska. So I am looking for all the help I can get...

I hope this photo works! This is a photo of "Marley" the 7 month old Great Dane we just adopted from the shelter 10 days ago. She was severely under weight, but we were able to put 10 lbs on her in 10 days! Gandalf our 3 yr old Pyr was not too sure of her, but he is warming up slowly! As long as Marley doesn't get too close to Momma when Gandalf thinks he should be getting my attention, we are all o.k.
I've only had to remind him a few times that I am the only alpha in the house!

Who'd have guessed? I too just rescued a Dane from a divorce situation, and "Marley" too is too skinny. She is 7 months old and only 66#  :o  I have a 3 yr old Great Pyr, and was looking for the right playmate for "Gandalf". She adores her big brother, and although she is not house broken yet, she is the sweetest thing on 4 legs. We went on our first walk today and they were a hit! It is so cold here, that I had to put a sweatshirt and a doggy coat on Marley. She knew she looked adoreable though. I have been feeding Gandalf Wolf King now because he had had trouble keeping on weight, so I feed Marley the Wolf King too. It is natural and higher in the Omegas etc. I work at our local vet clinic and our Dr.s did give her a round of worming meds. Didn't see any signs of parasites, but wanted to cover that base for the weight thing. I too would be glad to hear about anything anyone may have to offer about Danes. I have had Pyrs, Shepards and Huskies in the past so I have a little experience with the BIG guys, but I want to learn more breed specific stuff about Danes too. Thanks.
Hugs from Alaska!
PS I am still trying to figure the photo thing out, I can't get them less than 400KB. When I get it I'll send them!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Gandalf's Sister
« on: July 27, 2005, 09:10:04 pm »
I haven't been able to post for awhile since the move, but I just wanted to share the most amazing thing. I was working at the Vet clinic here in Valdez (which I LOVE by the way ;D) and one of our patients is a 2 year old female Pyr. I was chatting with the owner, and low and behold Gandalf and "Deva" are from the same litter! The haven't been able to play together yet, but when they do, I will be sure to have the camera ready for photos to post!

I want to know just how serious can one be about a man thaat says "NO" to a puppy? Ditch the guy and have a whole herd of puppies! You could start fostering just puppies! Then you would be too busy, and too happy to worry about anything you might miss from a guy! :o
Anyway, welcome Dyson. He is absolutely perfect. Best wishes to the new parents.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Great Pyrs & water..
« on: July 27, 2005, 08:56:10 pm »
Gandalf hated water too at first. When he had his knee surgery, he did water therapy. They have a treadmill in a special tank of water! Now he LOVES water. In fact the other day I was walking him around town on my lunch break, and the fire department was flushing the hydrants, he actually drug me over to them so he sould play in the Pyr size hose! He thinks my spraying him is the funnest game around! I also met here in Valdez the owner of Gandalf's sister! How exciting is that! Anyway, she told me "Deva" LOVES water too. The live with a stream in their back yard and Deva swims every day! Give it time. Or find a place enarby that does physical therapy for dogs. It is terrific low impact exercise for giants, They start out with a little or no water and add it for the dog to get comfortable. How is he when you bathe him? Maybe you could try giving him his next bath in the kiddy pool? Good luck. PS i haven't checked the site for awhile, have you gotten your puppy?

Actually the winters here inValdez aren't so bad, if you like snow. It doesn't get as cold here but it does DUMP snow. More fun for Gandalf. He loves to tunnel through it! But we will welcome visitors anytime! I have been here a week now and your right I am in desperate need of Mom and Gandalf time :'(

I started this the other night, and it disappeared, so if it is a repeat forgive me! I just wanted to give you an update...I started working at the Vet clinic in Valdez where we are planning to buy 4 acres for Gandalf and "friends" to run! I am staying in a camper until our house sells, and Gandalf is not with me and its killing me! :'( I am such a GOOD DOG MOM and such a BAD kid mom! I really miss him more than I do the girls :-\  I guess they are having a ball without me!  >:( Well this is the first step to owning that Pyr ranch. When we have a house built, you can all come and visit with your "kids" of course! Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Summer heat - Cut back his fur?
« on: July 05, 2005, 10:37:49 pm »
We shaved Gandalf last summer (his first) and he liked it so much, he actually leaned into the groomerand she wound up cutting it shorter than she planned! She left his tail and legs long and he looked quite humorous :D He thought he was "all that". I had him done by a different groomer this year, and was horribly dissapointed. I probably won't do it again. He looked like a billy goat when she was done with him! So my advice is get a groomer who has done Pyrs before. They usually cost more, but they are worth it!

Gandalf even eats the bark off of the wood in the wood box next to the fireplace! I guess its better than him chewing the trim on the house, which he did while he was teething! >:(

Doberman Pictures / Re: dobie headbutts-DO THEY ALL DO THIS???
« on: July 04, 2005, 07:02:09 am »
Gandalf is quite the head butter! His favorite is to do it while we are sleeping, early in the morning, when he can't hold it any longer. He will actually head butt the bed! When you live in Alaska it can be quite unnerving to have a Pyr shake your bed, initially we would think it was an earthquake! Now, if we really did have an earthquake I'd probably try to let it out to go... :o

While Gandlaf was growing, I had a series of bruises going up the back of my legs where he would head butt me.Of course he grew so fast it seemed like one long line of bruises!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Terrible twos Anyone?

I noticed a change in my Gandalf but he turned two right around the same time Max died, and I just chalked it up to getting used to being "the one" now. Hmmm....

Any chance I can get an invitation to that Pyr discussion group too???

Yes, you know the old joke, "What do you call a Pyr off leash?... Gone!" So in answer to the question does he wander... sometimes, however, he is such a momma's boy that he never goes too far.

The 1st photo was taken along the Denali Highway. It was the old route used to get from Anchorage, and Valdez to Fairbanks. The area is rugged and very beautiful We try to travel it every year. The area is full of caribou, moose, bears, porcupine- I even saw one as big as Gandalf! The bluberries are so plentiful in mid to late August, that you can't walk or sit without getting full of blue spots!

In answer to the question how old is Gandalf. He was 2 in March. He is quite the goofy teen now. :D We are in the middle of remodling the house, getting ready to sell, so we can buy that Pyr ranch! You are all welcome to visit us anytime, but you MUST bring your Big Paws too! ;D
