Treatment & Preventative Meds / TPO Recovery?
« on: July 24, 2006, 03:08:14 pm »
 :'(
My puppy, just over 1 year old, is going in for TPO surgery tomorrow to fix hte hip dysplasia.  Because we got this diagnosed so late, we have to do woth sides at once.  I am wondering if anyone has gone through the recovery and aftercare with their dog and can share their experiences.  I am terrified of the process.  I want to make sure I take good care of my dog so he heals well, but I am still not sure what all is invovled!
Can any one help me by sharing their experiences??
Thanks!

I have attached a couple of pictures, one of him just sitting and looking cute and one at puppy class graduation (when he didn't want to sit and just wanted to play with his classmates :)).
Sampson is a great dog.  I wonder at times if he will stop chewing on stuff, but I am amazed every day by what he is learning.  So much fun!

I tried to post the pictures but they are too big.  He is cute, and I will work on getting pictures up!

Hi. I just wanted to update everyone.  After doing the research about the GG my husband and I decided to not adopt through them.  Since then I have read a lot more that has convinced me I did the right thing.  (We decided to not even go up to see the dogs.  I am such a sucker for a dog in need!)  In part because I realized I did not research the rescue sufficiently, I decided to research danes more.  I had done some, but I don't think enough.  As much as I wanted a dane we decided they weren't the right match for us at this point in time.
My husband and I ended up getting a yellow lab (smaller than I wanted, but still a substantial dog).  My baby, Sampson, is doing well.  He is learning to be a good boy and my husband and I are learning a lot about being dog parents.
I wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered advice, information and encouragement.  Your comments were very helpful, and when it comes to GG, your information prevented what could possibly have been a disastrous situation.
Thank you.  I hope I can come back to the forum one day and talk my BIG dog! ;)

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Recommendations?
« on: July 29, 2005, 05:43:49 am »
Hi all.  Well... I was all excited about going to get a great dane tomorrow.  I was warned on another discussion about the rescue I was going to.  I did reasearch online and the stories are horrible.  I don't know how much of it is true, but my husband and I don't want to risk it.
So, now my husband and I are looking to rescue a great dane in southern california.  Does anyone have any recommendation s?  (BTW, we were giong to adopt from Gentle Giants in Norco.)
So.  Any ideas?
I saw on petfinder.com that there is a rescue, Indian Dane Rescue in San Marcos.  Does anyone know anything about that?
Thanks for your help.

I have just done some research (guess i should have before :-X).  Gentle Giants have a horrible reputation and it appears there is legal action happening to try to shut them down.  It is all online, so I am planning to the Norco Animal Shelter and maybe the City Council office to try to find out what is happening for sure.
Thanks for the heads up.  I will post on this thread what I find out tomorrow.
Wish me luck.

Hmm.   ???
I know about the food requirement.  They make that clear on their website.  The price seems reasonable based on what I have seen.  In addition it seems to be healthy, with no by-products.
I am a little concerned about the lack up help for people who have adopted from them.  One of the reasons I wanted to adopt from them was their offer of support for the life of the dog.
Well... we have an appointment for tomorrow.  We'll see how it goes.
Thank you for the heads up and additional information.

;D The time to get my dog is approaching!  I am spending the day trying to get my place ready.  I am adopting through Gentle Giants Rescue.  I have heard good things about them.  They really seem to love all the dogs they have and want to make sure their dogs go to good homes, which makes me hopefull that all will go well.
Does anyone have any advice regarding types of crates? I know that generally there a two types, the wire crates and friberglass crates.  I know there are pros and cons to each.  I just don't know which would be best.  I am thikning the crate will mostly be used for sleeping at night and as a place for the dog to go when he/she wants some peace and quiet.  I don't know yet whether the dog will go in the crate when we have to leave the dog home.  Any advice on that would be appreciated as well.
YAY! I am excited.  I little scared too, but mostly excited!

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement.  I don't think we will be getting a puppy.  We are going to a rescue so I am not sure what they will have available.  There are a lot of opportunities to socialize here in San Diego, so that won't be a problem.
If I get a dog that is over the puppy stage do you still think it is a good idea to crate train?
I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Hi.  I am very excited!  On Friday my husband I and I are getting a great dane.  We have limited experience with dogs.  We had an adorable 10lb ball of fluff.  My husband was scared of dogs, so we started small.  My little guy had to be put down after we had him for 1 year.  My husband is now feeling brave enough for a big dog (which I have always wanted).  So.  We are getting this great dane.  We are ready to love him lots, but aside from that is there any advice you could share with me?  I don't even know what advice to ask for specifically.   ::)
Thank you!
