Oh! They're precious!!!  Such cute kissable faces!
I totally missed out on Millie's puppy months - she was already 85 lbs when we got her.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all of your advice!

In response to Anky - I use the NILIF techniques, too.  I'm pretty sure one dog has helped the other with that concept, so that's worked out well.
I'm in a similar situation with seperating them, though.  Stella FREAKS OUT if either of us leaves the house and has started teaching Millie that if someone leaves that she should freak out, too.  This is very frusterating as when someone goes out to just throw the trash, Stella is jumping on the couch scratching at the window, whining and crying.  This mostly happens when my boyfriend walks out the door - if i'm still inside, it makes no difference, she still gets stressed out.
What do you do when Hobo gets like that?  I've tried giving them treats and things when my BF leaves so they associate it with something good, but i'm afraid of treating them when they're in that state because it might reward the stressed behavior.
maybe i should start another thread about this...

Both of my dogs (one big-paw, one not quite so big) are pathetically trained.  The smaller dog (Stella) is amazingly smart and knows many more commands than Millie, but i find it so hard to train at home with the both of them.  I've read books where they tell you to shut one dog in a room while you train your new dog but one dog will whine and cry if she is missing out on the action.  Doesn't matter if she gets to go next or already got her training bits.

How do you guys do it?  They compete for the treat and i think it is distracting to them when i try to have a training session with the both of them.  Any ideas?

By the way:  It looks like "Stay" is finally sticking for us (its been a real battle) and i'm really excited about it.   :D

I was lucky enough to find a petsitter on Craigslist who lives right down the road from my house.  She takes the dogs at her house and keeps them with her family and her dog which is great for their socialization and their comfort.  Luckily, both dogs LOVE it there!
We had some problems in the past with kenneling the dogs at a vet's office.  We had to go away for a wedding one weekend (which turns into about 4 days for the kennel since we can't pick up on Sundays because they're closed... >:(
Stella, our mix, is not so good with strangers and would bark at anyone who came near her.  At one kennel we tried, she came back to us with a cut over her eye because she lunged at the cage door.
At the vet's the last weekend they stayed there, we got Millie (the Saint) back with a urinary tract infection.  At a vet's office!

Here are some pictures of Millie.  She is 11 months old (almost 1 year!) and is a perfect angel.  Except, you know, when she's not...  :)

Thanks, everyone!!
This is my first SB, so i'm still not entirely used to her behavior (even though i've had her since February!) Our Stella-dog (we think she's Basenji/Rhodesian Ridgeback/Pit Bull) is very quick and obviously smart, if not manipulative.
Millie the Saint, however?  I've never met a goofier, happier pup.  She's a real doll, but 'will work for food' is probably her motto.
The only command that she does with no problems is 'sit', but that's probably because she was going to do it herself, anyway.  ;)

And shangrilarcadi a:  I'll take the slow dog, too. Hands-down.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Newbie here and question!

Hi!  I've been looking for a Saint message board!!  This is great!

My little girl, Millie, will be a whole year old sometime this month - she is a rescue, so i don't have very much information on her background.  We found her at a shelter at 7 months old (how could you give up that face!!)

I would love to know if you saint owners have had the same troubles we have had in her training.  Do you find that your Saint is slow to follow commands?  Stubborn maybe?  I don't want to think that she's ... not bright... but she is definitely not as quick to learn as our other dog (some kind of terrier-mix). Depending on her mood (and how tired she is) Most of the time she'll just stare at me when i ask her to "come".  And then usually you see the wheels turning, and then maybe eventually she'll get up...  Kind of funny to see, but not good enough!!
