Yeah they are very cute. I made the mistake of showing the pics so my SIL the one that may be getting the baby girl Saint. I think she has puppy fever too. LOL She likes female 3. She says well if I don't get approved for the Saint pup maybe..... I told her to wait and see if these people come clean about the breeding first. Why put money in dishonest peoples pockets right.

Plus who knows the breeder may decide her home is right for the real Saint pup she wants.

I absolutely agree about not giving money to dishonest people.  Not only is it dishonest, but misrepresentin g something and claiming it is one thing when it isn't is also a crime...fraud!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Backwards Sneezing

Thanks everybody!  I was actually kind of scared to read your responses, for fear that it would be bad news.  I'm glad to hear that I probably don't need to be rushing her to the vet.  She seems really active and healthy so for now i'll just keep an eye on it.

As far as her sleepy wheezing it could just be heavy breathing.  I don't hear it any other time even after she has been running or playing.  Thanks again for all of your reassurences.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Backwards Sneezing
« on: October 16, 2005, 02:15:42 am »
Lately Finley has been doing this backwards sneezing thing, it sounds like she is sucking in air and can't catch her breath.  It is only every once in a while.  She also sometimes sounds like she is hacking up a hair ball, also not a constant thing.  Also when she sleeps she has this deep wheezing sounding breath, it almost sounds like a person w/ asthma or something.  Her health seems really good, and the weird coughing stuff doesn't seem to bother her at all.  I'm only asking b/c I know there is that flu going around and i'm wondering if these may be symptoms.  Do I need to be worried?  Could it be something else?  Do Saints have any inherent breathing problems I should watch for?  Hopefully someone will have some insight into this.  Thanks! ;D

P.S.  Here are more pictures of my little girl!

Here is our new little girl, Finley.  She is about 8 or 9 weeks old in this photo, so she is much bigger now.  She is such a great addition to our family.  Seamus was a little skeptical at first, but now I think he likes her.

Just wanted to share!

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Pee Monster
« on: September 30, 2005, 06:57:52 am »
We recently got a new puppy, another St. named Finley.  She seems really smart, but we have had a little trouble house breaking her.  She has gotten down the concept that she shouldn't poop inside, but peeing is a whole other story.  We call her the pee monster b/c she is peeing constantly, half of the time in and half of the time out.  I talked w/ our trainer at petsmart and she suggested limiting her water intake.  She said some dogs just drink a lot, sometimes more than they need.

When we first got her I tried to have a strict water curfew, no water after around 8pm.  The problem was she was rough housing w/ Seamus even after 8pm and seemed soooo thirsty.  I inevitably ended up giving her water b/c she was being active.  I have sort of tried limiting the water on a small scale, I leave an empty bowl down and when she goes to it, typically I will give her some.  I don't know how much a puppy should drink and it just seems like it can't be good for her.  Is there such a thing as too much water?

What should I do?  The pee monster is driving me crazy!

My St.'s legs look a lot like yours, if not worse.  He is REALLY bow legged.  It had me worried too, but he doesn't seem to be in pain and he is really active.  My vet hasn't sensed any problems yet, but we haven't gotten him x-rayed.  I'll try and see if I can get a picture of them so you can see that you aren't alone.  Let me know if you find anything else out, and if I should get Seamus checked.  Thanks!

I'm not sure how crafty you are, but my fiance recently went to a craft store and bought styrafome and wood and made our own.  We only use it for pictures, but in photos it looks as good as the real thing.  I know I couldn't do it, but if you are crafty you could give it a try.  It probably cost him around $10-$15.  Just a suggestion.

We tried it w/ Seamus and he wouldn't go near it.  We ended up having to throw it out.  Unfortunately, we paid for it! >:(

Food Discussion & Information / Walking while eating
« on: September 03, 2005, 02:54:43 pm »
Whenever Seamus eats he puts a huge bite in his mouth and then wanders around.  He spills food out of his mouth ALL over the house.  It is so annoying and we can't make him sit still.  Does anyone else's dog do this?  If so, any suggestions to make him stop?

I found mine at petsmart, I think it was around 30-40.  If you haven't gotten one yet, I recommend getting the one that is metal and is basically a wire frame.  We got a plastic one b/c we thought it would be sturdier, but food and water gets underneath the bowls and gets smelly and messy.  The plastic one requires a lot of cleaning.  Good luck finding one!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Rawhides
« on: September 03, 2005, 02:49:24 pm »
Does anyone have any suggestions for good, safe chewies?  I've tried Nylabones but Seamus doesn't really like them.  Our vet said rawhides are okay as long as they are big enough for him not to ingest a lot at one time.  We buy those HUGE rawhides from petsmart.  We haven't had any problems yet, but if he shouldn't have them i'll stop.  He needs something to chew on when he is board though, and only edible stuff seems to work.  Any ideas?

Thanks everybody for the responses!  I think we have decided to switch.  B/c of Seamus' constant itching the vet recommended a hypoallergenic food.  We haven't had him allergy tested so we don't even know if it is a food allergy, but that seems most likely.   The vet gave us a prescription for MRX RC Canine LID Potato and Venison.  Has anyone heard of it?  I don't think it is made for large breeds so i'm a little concerned about it, although his itching is REALLY bothering him.
He is currently on Nutro large breed puppy, but he hates it.  We have to mix in wet food in order for him to eat at all.  I think switching his food is going to be kind of an ordeal, as he has a really weak stomach and gets the runs easily.  B/c of that we don't want to have to keep switching his food.  AHH!  What to do?
Let me know if there are any suggestions or if anyone has heard of that food I mentioned.  Thanks!

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Need some BPO opinions...

I've actually heard that dogs NEED to have a place like a crate to go to.  Dogs are naturally den animals and I've heard that when a dog is left to his own devices in a big space they can sometimes get overwhelmed and get anxiety.  Perhaps thats why he isn't sleeping?
Maybe it is even a really good thing that you are crating him at night.  I'm sure it makes him feel safe and secure.  Don't feel bad about crating him.  He doesn't need a ton of space while sleeping, so it doesn't matter if he is in a crate or not.  You sound like a very concerned and loving pet owner.  Don't feel guilty!
