Samoyed Discussions & Pictures / Re: I feel like such a fraud!!!!!

Samoyeds have a better personality anyhow.  In fact, they have the best personality of any dog I've ever met.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Gas pains or Bloat?????????
« on: June 19, 2005, 01:36:11 pm »
It is my understanding that it can happen with in just a few hours and some times less. So getting them to the vet A.S.A.P is a must.

Actually, it's often less than a few hours.

What bloat is, is when the stomache, or intestines, or some part of the digestive tract loses it's blood supply.  When this happens, the organs are cut off from their oxygen supply, and quickly die.  If you ever suspect bloat, rush your dog to the vet.

A common cause of it, is feeding your dog too much water at once.  The weight of the water can cause the stomach to twist and cut off the blood supply.  this happens mostly with deep chested breeds.  I'm careful not to over-feed my dog water, even if they are obviously thirsty.  I re-hydrate them at 30 minute intervals after long hikes.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Cure for Jumping...
« on: June 07, 2005, 11:49:28 pm »
I know what always works.

When the jump, just grab their paws and hold them up.  Keep holding them up by their paws and they'll soon regret jumping up when they realize you aren't going to let go.  Next, the dog will start gnawing at your hands and trying to pull away - don't let go.  When you think they've learned this little lesson, you can put them down.

When it's not fun, they won't do it.

You're ready for it?   :D Have you ever had a long haired dog before?

Bring your dog to the local PetCo and start trying out different COMBS - brushes won't do anything.  You might want a rake.  You want teeth on the comb or rake that are WIDELY spaced, 1/4 inch apart is ideal - this will pull out the undercoat.

I bring my dogs inside to comb them out because it produces so much hair.  Just do it in a room that's easy to vaccuum.  If your dog has never been groomed before, be patient.  I'd recommend you start right now.  When your dog is sick of grooming (which will be quickly if she's never been groomed before) quit, and then start up later again.

It takes me about 1-2 hours to completely comb out my dogs, and I'm good at it.  I have Samoyeds though and I'm pretty obsessive about their appearance.

I never understodd the reasoning that if you allowed an alpha dog on your bed it would create problems.

You sleep alone, therefore you are the alpha dog, right?

Well, if the dog sleeps alone, is he the alpha dog?

And if you sleep together is the dog sleeping with you and therefore becoming the alpha dog or are you sleeping with the dog, and therefore YOU are the alpha?  If just doesn't make sense to me.

I've slept with my dogs for a long time and never had a problem.  I've had alpha dogs in rescue a few times.  Rescues don't sleep in my bed (I do not allow rescues to get too comfortable in my home because I don't know what sort of person is going to adopt them)

I've once been threatened by an alpha female Siberian, and I simply backhanded her across her face for showing teeth, and that pretty much established our heirachy after that.  She never challenged me again or showed aggression with me.  I know that a lot of people say you shouldn't physically hurt a dog, but in my opinion, this is short sighted.  It's not something  you should do lightly but it's a tool.  If a dog bites me while in rescue, I'm supposed to euthanize them and I'd rather beat a dog up than kill one.

With regard to physical punishment, it's extremely important to distinguish between a dog showing aggression because of fear, and another showing aggression because of dominance.  If a dog is showing aggression because of fear and you hurt them for it, it will only establish in their mind that they were right to be afraid and should have been aggressive because you were aggressive.  Never hurt a dog that is showing aggression because of fear.  Either don't interact with them or if you do get bitten, just grin and bear it and don't show pain or fear.

Samoyeds are pretty neat aren't they?  I'd say they are the best dog in the world - they are especially good with children, and very affectionate.  Also, they are destructive if not given enough attention, require constant grooming, are pushy, and shed a lot.  They're the perfect animal  ;D

This is my Samoyed - she's SUPPOSEDLY a purebred, but she's way off breed standard.  I do do rescue and I adopted her through there.

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Re: What is going on with PETA?
« on: March 30, 2005, 12:04:23 am »
Dogs and cats CANNOT live on carrots and cabbage!

Actually....

Dogs are ominivores.  Cats *can* live on a vegetarian diet as long as it's supplimented with taurine.  Dogs can go on a vegetarian diet provided you know what you are doing.

I'm a vegetarian, and I have dogs, but frankly, I'd feed you to them if it came right down to it  :D and I do feed them meat based dog food - Iams actually.

PETA is a sham organization.  They run no shelters, they fund no alternative research, they do absolutely nothing but collect money from people that believe they are a good organization.

What should be done is that somebody should sponser a bill that would place greater accountability on owners.  If one of my dogs injured or killed somebody, I think I should be guilty of manslaughter.  I trust my dogs entirely and I would be willing to be held account to anything they did.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Dog friendly places
« on: March 20, 2005, 04:36:33 pm »
Here are some pics of one of the most dog friendly places in Ca. In Carmel, dogs are welcome anywhere (stores, restaurants, etc). The first pic is at Bear's favorite eatery where he gets giant hamburbers and the second is of a water fountain where dogs can drink. It's called the Fountain of Woof!

Where is that place pictured in Carmel?  I'm in Sunnyvale.  Stoddards was dog friendly, but then they went bankrupt  :'( and the Tied House is just downright hostile toward dogs, and besides, their beer is awful.

I would love another Aussie!  I dont have one anymore!

Join a dog rescue.  I did dog rescue for Aussies for a bit.

Just go to google, and enter the following as your search

"YOUR_STATES_NA ME australian shepherd rescue"

For me it's "California australian shepherd rescue"

I found the two very best dogs in the world doing dog rescue, but I got them from Samoyed Rescue.  Here's the organization I work with:
