Great Pyrenees Discussions / Sadie's 1st Birthday!!!
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:11:34 am »
Hi guys, I haven't been on much lately, but I wanted to let everyone know that my baby is one year old today.  :)
AND, my dear husband and I have found out we are expecting our first child in November. No wonder I've been so stinking tired lately...LOL
So anyway, my mother is scared out of her mind that Sadie is going to maul our new baby over because she's such a beast!! I need some ammo to hit her back with, so all of you Pyr owners, tell me how great they are with kids  :P

I love how Kiah has one of her paws tucked under as she lays down. Sadie does that all the time too, I thought she was weird but maybe it's a Pyr thing. :-)

I bawled like a newborn baby during a few scenes. I thought it was a fabulous movie, I'll definitely own it when it comes out on DVD. Highly recommended :-)

We got our crate off EBAY. It was new and very well priced, I think it's one of the biggest crates out there. We got it for under $100 with shipping.  Worth a try! Good luck :-)

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Questions!!
« on: March 06, 2006, 01:39:07 pm »
Ok, Sadie will be 1 year on the 31st...I've noticed that she doesn't want to eat as much as she used to lately. She only wants to eat about once a day now whereas when she was younger she'd eat twice a day. Is this normal? We just switched her over from puppy food to dog food a few weeks ago. I don't want to panic if it's normal for her appetite to change from age and not something else.
Also, her ears seem to have been bothering her the last week. She's constantly shaking her head, and they smell pretty bad!!  I've got the ear cleaner stuff from Petsmart, but the vet told me when she was younger that she'd be prone to yeast infections because most floppy earred dogs are...so is it most likely a yeast infection? I cleaned her ears out with the cleaner, which she absolutely detests, and for a day or so it got better but now it's back. Oh yeah, and her eyes are leaking this yellowish guck. Maybe the ears and eyes are related? Short of an intestinal bug, this is the only thing that's been wrong with her since we got her. I need advice :-)

So I thought I'd give Sadie something to make her a little more comfortable while she had to spend a few hours in her cage........

I had no idea she'd commit murder.   :o

When reading the Large Breed Puppy Chow bag, it says that large breeds are considered "puppies" until they are about 2. I assumed that meant they should be fed the puppy food until they are 2. Does anyone disagree with that, I'm reading here that it's ok to switch before then.

I will try the chicken broth and rice. I know I'm just nervous that she's going to die or something!! It's the first time she's gotten sick! Her weight loss bothers me, but I know she'll gain it back once she starts eating normally again.  Thanks for your advice guys, I will definitely call if tomorrow she's still vomitting and not drinking.

The kennel is very strict about vaccinations and showing proof! No blood in anything that I've noticed. She isn't drinking as much as she normally would. I wondered if the stress of being boarded two weekends in a row might have something to do with it.  My husband keep saying "She'll eat when she's hungry!", but as the mom I'm concerned for my baby and her health.  How long is too long for her to not be eating real meals or drinking normally? Is it possible that now she has turned in to a picky eater? Do dogs do that? LOL

I know I should be calling my vet right now, but you guys are just as good as they are in my opinion. Here's the story:  Sadie was boarded over Christmas weekend, came home Monday after x-mas and began vomitting/diahrrea.  48 hours later we took her to the vet, she had lost 5 lbs but she was acting pretty normal. He listened to her bowels and said she had an intestinal virus or something like that.  He prescribed Metro-something pills, told us to fast her for 24 hours, then strictly rice/chicken/ground turkey for a week. Ok, that's all done, but she has barely eaten for a week which means she has barely pooped too, and this morning after she did eat her normal food again, she vomitted. I assume it's time for another vet visit? I can't have her not eating/drinking and when she does, vomitting!! Any other ideas? Do you think she just needs another round of meds?
