If you are on a tight budget don't get a dane. Because of their sheer size costs for meds and routine vet care is much higher than say a lab. Plus even though I have very healthy danes they seem to need alot more vet visits than my labs ever did. They have thin coats and can get cut and hurt fairly easily. I would get pet insurance. It has saved me thousands of dollars. VPI has been excellent for us and Cooper has required extensive surgery and emergency care and they cut the final bill down to one third of its original ( and staggering) size. They are lovely dogs but I would say they are alot more expensive to care for than most breeds.
