Great Dane Discussions / Browning of Black Fur
« on: December 03, 2006, 03:26:18 am »
Hi All,

Rocky's fur seems to be turning brownish.  You really notice it when he is outside.  Has anyone else noticed this in their black dane?  A friend of mine said she sort of remembered reading that it could be a deficiency of some sort.  Any ideas?

Great Dane Discussions / Help !!! Rocky is starting to bite
« on: October 26, 2006, 01:46:31 pm »
Hi all,

In the summer Rocky started to growl at anyone who tried to touch him while he was chewing a bone.

At that time I took the bone right away from him and advised the kids to stay away when he had a bone in his mouth.

Last week my son had a friend over, Rocky was lying on the floor chewing on a bone and the friend went to pat him (my back was turned) Rocky bit him, no blood but puncture marks.  He didn't growl at all.

My husband went over to take the bone away from him and he tried to bite my husband as well. No growling again  (my hubby has quick reflexes!!!)

This week, I started holding a bone in my hand and letting him chew while I petted him.  Trying to make him feel o.k. about it.  He was fine.  I let him chew by himself tonight and my six year old daughter went to pat him (I was standing right there) before I could get the words "stay away from him" out of my mouth he bit her in the hand drawing a little blood.

I am very worried.  What can I do to stop this behaviour?  I worry because he is 115 pounds and compared to my kids he is huge.  What really scares me is that I was right there when all the bites happened!!!

Help I need some advice.

Hi there,

I do walk him everyday.  I wonder if I am walking him long enough?  How long should I be walking him at this point?

Hi all,

We love our Rocky dearly, but sometimes..... ....I get a little worried about his behaviour.  He is 8 mos. and around 115 pounds.

Here are some of the things he does that are of concern:

1.  He has recently started to try and jump up on people as a greeting.  He is about 115 pounds and has knocked my six year old over a couple of times now.  I am not exactly sure how to handle this outside of scolding him.

2.  My son decided to have a staring contest with him and Rocky lunged at him.  He wasn't growling or anything I think it was more of a play thing.  I have also noticed that Rocky will sometimes try to engage me in a staring contest.

3.  When he wants to play....he wants to play and will keep bugging and not listen to any commands.

4.  If there is food on the table, counter etc.  he will keep trying to get at it until I pull him away.  He doesn't listen!!!

It is as if he does things only when he is ready. If I say "out" when he goes into an off limits room (my kids' rooms I am afraid he will choke on their little toys) He won't leave until I grab his collar. He seems to be challenging me alot. I feel as if he doesn't respect me!!!!!!

Any suggestions?  I am worried that this is the start of aggressive/dominant behaviour.

Hi All

I just had Rocky neutered. He is almost 8 mos and weighs 111.

I expected to see nothing there and instead I was surprised to see something resembling a tennis ball.  The vet said it will slowly shrink.....

IS THIS NORMAL!!!!!!

Great Dane Pictures / rocky pictures, fur, height and food questions
« on: August 24, 2006, 06:12:07 am »
I am hoping the pictures of Rocky at the cottage come out.

Can someone look at Rocky's fur on his back and tell me if the wavy look is normal for a Great Dane.

He is 7 mos. and is 103 pounds.  About 30 inches high. Any one know how much higher he will get.

Rocky still has lots of stomach problems and am now going to try him on Nature Valley (Dick Van Patten) Duck and potatoe.  any thoughts?

Thanks, Barb

Hi everyone,  (I will add new pictures soon...I have to figure out how again)

Anyway my great dane Rocky is seven months and 103 pounds. I am wondering height wise how much more he will grow.  Someone told me he is pretty much done height wise....I am not so sure, will he keep growing taller until a year old?

His fur on his back especially on both sides of his spine is slightly wavy, Is that normal? or could he actually have another breed in him?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Rocky has started growling
« on: August 21, 2006, 08:28:11 am »
Hi all,

My Rocky has started growling if you try to take something out of his mouth.  I am a little worried, because he seems to do it more to the kids (6yrs and 7yrs old). Any suggestions on how to stop this?

He is now six months and I am wondering if that is a sign of aggresiveness and I should get him neutered sooner than I had planned?

Also, once his hormones have kicked in, does neutering really make a difference?

My first clue that he was going to be o.k. was my son's Pogo (breaded hot dog) disappearing off of the table and the unmistakable hot dog breath on Rocky.

3 feedings, water and poops later.....He is o.k.

Hi All,

My handsome guy destroyed my garden yesterday!!!!  Ahh, I was so enjoying the peace and quite, I should of known he was up to something out there!!!!

Anyway, today my boy is not feeling so well.  He hasn't eaten or drank anything yet this morning.  He hasn't even gone outside for his morning pee.  He is just sleeping.

I am not sure if I should give it until this evening or take him to the vet now.  I figure something in the garden has made him sick but I am hoping it is not serious.  Any thoughts??

I suspect Rocky has ear mites.  Do I have to go to the Vet or can I buy over the counter.   Barb

Hi there,

My Rocky seems to sleep alot.  He is 5 months old.  He wakes up around 7:00AM  goes back to sleep around 9:00 Am  Wakes up about 11:00 goes back to sleep around 1:00.  Wakes up at about 3:30 (seems to know when the kids are getting off the bus already!!) and stays up until about 8:00 then that is it for the night!!!

Does he sleep so much during the day because I am so boring?? He seems to stay up longer when the kids are around.

Great Dane Discussions / Rocky is sick........again
« on: May 31, 2006, 08:25:01 am »
Hi there,

I really thought we were over the worst.

When I brought Rocky home about a month and a half ago (he is about 21 weeks now)he came with, giardia, pnemonia, kennel cough, worms, eye infection.

I thought we were over everything. I finished all antibiotics etc. last Thursday and then yesterday his  poop became runny,  last night his eyes started to get white goop again and this morning his nose has yellow/green discharge.  UGHHHH.

He is eating, but just seems "off".  I don't know if I am seeing things that are not there in his behaviour because I am on alert.  Everytime he sighs, I run over to check his breathing.  I am going to the vet tomorrow.

This is so frustrating!!! The poor puppy has had so much wrong, he needs a break!!!!!!
