Hi everyone..I usually don't post too much...but I am thankful that we knew the signs and had a plan.

Friday night, my 3 year old newf, Rudder went into Bloat.
It was horrifying to say the least.
He ate his normal dinner of 2 1/2 cups of food with yogurt and cottage
cheese at 4:15. At 8pm we were watching TV and he came into the living
room stumbling and retching I got up and took him outside where he
continued to have trouble. I felt his stomach and it felt like he
swallowed a boulder. We immediately got in the car and drove up to the
emergency animal hospital in Nashua, NH. The wisked him away and
x-rayed. his stomach was twisted 180 degrees. They were preparing for
emergency surgery and he thru up! BUCKETS...poor clean up team. She
xrayed again and his stomach untwisted. but his intestines were still
filled. they watched him for a few more hours hoping that the gas would
go down it did not. They xrrayed again and he went into full bloat
again. this time they did the sug
ery and also did a gastropexy. He made
it through!!!!!!! His spleen was not damaged and he was able to come
home last night because he was recovery so well.
All I can say is that you just need to be aware of the signs. I am
thankful that I did and he is alive and well. I love my boy!

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Tell me about your Newf!
« on: August 18, 2008, 01:13:07 pm »
Rudder is our 2 1/2 yr old newf. He is your typical drooly and shedding boy. He is weighing in at 165 pounds and still skinny...he is very large for the breed. He has a stubborn side, but is just the sweetest pooch. All he wants to do is be around people 24/7. He is unbelievably gentle with my 3 month old son...despite his size!! We give him baths everyother week (unless he is doing water training, then it is every week) and gets brushed every night. You do not want to let a newfs coat get away from you!!!! He is our first "son" and will always be a contributing member of the family. We do obedience, water and draft work at the moment with him....he is also a big ham and loves having his picture taken!

Newfoundlands are just big, sweet, lovable goofballs...bu t they do have their drawbacks...lo ts "o" drool, FUR, FUR , FUR...if you don't brush them on a regular basis, they get matted and look unkept. They have spurts of energy, but most of the time they just want to sleep! My boy, Rudder, is 2 years old and 165 pounds of love. I wouldn't trade him for anything! He LOVES the water...we don't have a pool and the kiddie pools are too small..so we settle for the lake and also are involved in a newfoundland water rescue training group..he gets his fun in the water! I also agreee to go to the dog shows in your area and talk to the newfie people there or contact your local Newfoundland Club chapter...GOOD LUCK!

Good to hear you guys are doing well. Rudder is a brat also...19 months old and he could care less unless I have food around! His latest brat move is that he will dig into the laundry bin and grab my bras and run around the house until I take him outside!!!!!! He just looks at me and runs the other way....oh well...he is still a big mush ball

Newfoundland Discussions / Nervous Handler problem!! help
« on: November 04, 2007, 10:23:06 am »
OK! so here is my problem.....ME ...not my newf! I am trying to get a rally title (one leg already)...but I seemed to have "checked out". I am so nervous before I go in with him! He knows what he is doing, but I know that he senses how nervous I am and just starts to shut down. I tried the mint thing etc...NOTHING is helping. I am NQ'ing because I keep screwing up...also, no matter how hard i try, I can't get him to be attentive...we do all kinds of attention training home and at class! I even give him tons of treats before we go in. the minute he has no food...good bye! Any help from people would be awesome! thanks!

OK....anyone with a big dog competing in Rally? We tried it for the first time 2 weekends ago. Got our first leg on saturday (YEAH) but on Sunday, we didnt qualify for "lack of briskness"!!!!!!! I was told that time didn't matter! anyone else have this experience?? Rudder isn't the most fleet of foot!!!!

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: How big is your Newfie??
« on: September 30, 2007, 05:49:01 pm »
If you can feel his ribs by slightly pushing, then he is fine:) that is the most important. my boy, rudder, is VERY large. He is 160 right now and only 18 months old...he is also VERY lean. He hasn't started to fill out yet. He is lanky right now. Every newf is different in their growth. Rudder's dad, lincoln, didn't completely fill out until 4 years old!!! We met his father's owner last week and they mentioned that Rudder will fill out at the same rate..holy smokes! We wanted big...eeks!:)

I think Rudder drooled from the first minute on the earth..hahaha. ..he isn't bad though..when we exercise, eat or drink is when he drools....we ALWAYS carry the "rudder rag" wherever we go!

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Help with Newf Coat Care??
« on: July 11, 2007, 07:12:19 am »
Unfortunately, you need to dry them after every swim to avoid mats. I think someone mentioned becareful shaving...that is true. Newfs have that coat to shelter them from heat and cold, ESPECIALLY in the water. Good Luck
