Thanks for the advice...I will definatly use it!  It is so funny how we love our dogs so much, but there are tons of things that they do that just gross us out!!!

I will walk Izzie for a good hour around the neighborhood and she will come home to our yard to do her business. Last week she ran over to the neighbor's yard and was sniffing around and then rolled in some fresh dog poop. She did it again a few nights later...Ok-lesson learned!  Don't let her on the neighbor's lawn, even if it's just to sniff.  Do any of your Big Paws like to roll in poop or dead animals?  I was ready to spill my cookies with the smell of that dog poop and Izzie came in prancing like she was wearing some kind of expensive perfume!!  :o

Just wondering if you all could send me some good names for my new saint baby.  He's coming home next wednesday!  Thanks a lot!!!  :)

What perfect markings!!  I have a Henri and an Izzie, so I tend to use people names!  He looks like a Gershwin or a Sabastian or even a Vincent and you could call him Vinny.  Just immediate names that came to mind while admiring your pics!!  We had a Saint named Moose when I was growing up! lol ;)

Giant Schnauzer Discussions / Re: New to Giant Schnauzers
« on: December 30, 2006, 01:31:21 am »
I can't believe I am giving any suggestions about Giant Schnauzers, but I have done a considerable amount of reading on them POST adoption of Izzie (13 month old now).  True to what you will read about GS, they are very territorial and would do best with a dog their own size.  If your schnauzer is already of substantial size and you bring in a small puppy, you could be in for trouble. I have a 23-lb cockapoo who is now 14 years old.  He, too, was a rescue dog and he is now deaf and blind.  Because of the size difference between him and Izzie, he often ends up getting hurt.  This is not because Izzie is mean, it is more the fact she does not realize her size and strength.
I love little dogs, but in fairness to the dog's well-being, I would think twice before I brought a youngster in with a GS of any size.  Just my own thoughts.... ;)

Giant Schnauzer Discussions / Re: Update on Izzie
« on: December 30, 2006, 01:25:04 am »
Izzie weighed in at 60 lbs. just before Christmas so she is having growth spurts.  Our vet said this would happen.  When I adopted her, her ribs and hip bones were showing so I am not surprised that she is gaining weight.  It has now been almost three months and her coat has turned shiny black (as opposed to the previous dull coat she had)!

I have a new problem to ask you---now that Izzie has grown taller and can survey the countertops in the kitchen (can you guess my problem?)...she is helping herself to cookies that are there cooling on racks and to trimmings off a steak, and I caught her eyeing a 16-lb. turkey a few weeks ago.  I have scolded her and tried to reason with her and if she wasn't so darn well fed, I could say she was hungry! Has anyone else had a problem with their BIG DOG puppy grazing the countertops in the kitchen (and I haven't even tried to set the table with food yet!)?!!
All suggestions are most welcome!!   ;D

Yes, we have a kong (suggested by our obedience trainer) and also just found a 12-in rolled rawhide.  Izzie was chewing through the 8-in rawhide in a week or so~

Thank you for your suggestion!!! :)

Giant Schnauzer Discussions / Giant Schnauzer and owner new here!
« on: December 10, 2006, 05:07:04 pm »
Hi there!  I am a giant schnauzer named Izzie (short for Isabella) and I was adopted from the local shelter a couple months ago.  I was surrendered because my owners said they didn't want me because I was "untrainable"!!  I am just finishing a beginner's obedience class and now I know how to sit, shake, lay and I will roll over if there is enough room!!  My new mom is sort of at a loss because she has never owned a BIG dog....I just had my first birthday and am growing just like my vet said I would. I have gone from 39 lbs. to 52 and it looks like I am in a growth spurt right now!  I do get bored easily and look for things to do....Any suggestions?  Thanks!!  We (my mom (Jeanie) and I are happy we have found this site!!  We are going to post pics later next week!!
