Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Heavy Panting
« on: September 08, 2007, 02:47:45 pm »
This summer we decided to clip Maddax and am glad we did.  We tried brushing, bathing, blowing and he was still so uncomfortable.  The minute he walked outside he ran for the nearest shade.  As soon as we clippered him we saw a drastic change in his mood.  I don't plan on showing him and so far his coat is growing in like it should.  It also helped in the house (we don't have a/c of any kind) his panting also decresed and seemed all around happier.  This worked for us, but may not work for others.

Bernermom I will try the blower next year as well!! Thanks!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / My Little Shy Berner...
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:56:15 am »
I am sure that we all remember the kid in the back of the class that wouldn't talk to anyone, would never speak unless forced to, and would walk away as soon as someone tried to talk to them.  This is Maddax he is so shy around people, we take him everywhere with us and he still runs away anytime someone tries to pet him. He will go up to them and sniff, but the minute they try and give him a pet, well I didn't know berners could run so fast.

Now don't let him fool you, when he gets around his friends (he has a full grown berner "sunny" down the street, a minature dachsund "whimper", and a terrier "ariel") or is at home with his brothers he is a different dog.  He can't get close enough.  He has taken to back hugs(paws over sholders licking my ears) when I am leaning over my computer on the couch.

So how can I have him become friendlier around people?  We were hoping to get him involved in Therapy work, but can't if he stays this shy.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Afraid of water
« on: July 11, 2007, 06:51:35 pm »
Maddax was the same as zeus, but he is so afraid to be left that all we had to do was get in the water and he would follow.  We have been working with him taking him to the park at least three times a week and now he will go in up to the point that he has to swim and then no further.  We have been told by friends that we need to find a dog that swims and that it will help Maddax learn.  Now all we have to do is find that friend...

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Bully sticks
« on: June 23, 2007, 05:39:03 pm »
So after reading the reviews you guys gave of bully sticks I thought that they were something i had to try.  It took me a day to get over what it was, now it is just another toy to be found in the most random spots.  You were all right though he loves it.  We got him the 12" one and he carries it around the house and will even lay on the couch and munch it.   ;D ;D

You are braver than me I can't even walk into the dog or cat area of the shelter without having to be dragged out.  The entire time trying to talk my roommate into just one more dog or one more cat.  Now the only time I go is to drop off donations.

That sounds like an amazing idea (giving treats) I just don't know if I could do it without getting kicked out of my house for bringing one home.

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / Re: Landlords!!!!!
« on: June 14, 2007, 02:25:26 pm »
I wouldn't move, even if you were able to sneak them in at night there is always the fear of eviction.  I didn't have our puppy at the time, but had two cats and had to keep them out of the windows because we were afraid of getting evicted.  We lived in a no pet apartment.

It wasn't fair to the boys, they were accustomed to things being a certain way and being able to run the house, but we put so many new restrictions on them.  We ended up deciding to buy a house that is the same every month as our rent and are much happier as are the boys.  We also were able to get a dog.  If you can hold out where you are now I would and then when you are able to buy and live without restrictions.

If the place is nice talk to the landlord and see if you can work out a contract that says that you will higher someone to come in and repair any damage and it will be out of your pocket.  He may be willing to allow them to be inside.  Questions are free.  See if he would be willing to work with you on it.

I feed my little man Innova, but we were feeding him Purina One Large Breed Puppy.  He seemed to get full after about 2 cups of it (he was 12lbs and 9 weeks old).  We are pretty lucky though Maddax (supervised) self regulates.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Commercial...it was meant to be....

Last year my roommate purchased a Honda Ridgeline truck.  I am watching the Pistons vs the Cavs  (DEEETRRROOOIII TT BAAASKETBAAAAL LLLL) and a comercial comes on that made me laugh out loud.  We were totally destined to get a Bernese Mountain Dog.  Here is a link to the commercial

Bernese Mountain Dog Discussions / Re: Catdog

HAHA I am sure that Julian and Blaine would love to have him in their litter box.  I personally would think it was hillarious (they have the booda dome with stairs and covered).  Blaine did sort of do something similar a couple days ago.  I was sitting watching tv and we are trying to house break, so we have puppy pads.  Blaine walked over did his bussiness and then tried to cover it on the puppy pad.

I am hoping that Maddax never finds out that the stuff in the box is edible.

I know what you mean about wishing you had pictures I feel that with a puppy I should just carry the camera everywhere with me.

No so far things have been gentle, but the cats also have a five foot tree that Maddax can't quite get to them yet (who knows in a year).  It is absolutley hilarious to watch, especially because they are getting along.

I don't know if anyone has ever hear of that show, but my roomie and I are now calling MAddax are little Catdog.  He is picking up on his brothers behavoirs.  For example when they play he will turn side ways and him and Blaine will circle each other like that (he is still trying to figure out how to put his hackles up).  He also likes to pat them like they do each other, if they are sleeping he wll comeup to the, sit down, and then slowly raise his paw to pop them, then run away.

I think my favorite though is the other day he got real low and stalked Julian, pounced on him, and then began to use his back paws to attack(all in fun no hissing or growling).  I will have to get a picture of it.

Has anyone elses BP's picked up on his cat siblings behavoirs?  He is around dogs almost daily, but is now playing with them as if he were a cat.  Should I be worried about this behavoir?
