That is so sad for everyone involved.    My dogs are great animals and have never shown aggression to people but I still watch them closely around new people especially children.
You said it all when you said watching them closely around new people. :) Over the halloween holiday, I had several costumes delivered and one day, I actually answered the door and the post man said he was surprised not to hear the dog barking.....I was in shock. In 4 years, my ODIN has not barked at so much a flea. We actually have to hold up squeaky man (our softie) or a treat in command speak to get a bark! :)

I wonder.....

Me too...glad the kid is being held accountable. Heck, my 170 lb mammoth (small, i know), required extensive training to be able to walk beside me on loose leash like a good boy.

I feel so sad for the mom, but it still fuels the silliness that all big dogs are bad. They aren't...

I tried to explain to my son the other day:

Training a mastiff to be agressive requires work because it isn't in their temperment naturally. Training a rottie to be non-aggressive might be a little bit of a task because they are more aggressive by nature. Responsible owners KNOW their breeds (or mixes), I would hope. Its why our Odin makes the best house dog ever.

Guard dog? not so much. LOL :P

She is CUTE! Sorry though, my babyy is not a mix. He is now almost 4 years and around 170lbs. Here he is at 4 months.

I found this of interest because it shows how bad ownership gives animals bad names...and this owner gets served over a year later.

Alexis Cox, Kylie's (the 3 month old baby) mother, had taken her baby to a friend's house where there was a group of people. She supposedly left the baby with a friend in the living room while she (the mother) went to the kitchen to heat a bottle because upon arrival, the baby was fussing.

Christopher Fura (a young kid himself) who was at the house had brought his rottweiler, Chopper, to the house as well. Fura and his stepbrother, Jason Winters, had owned the 120 pound dog for 10 days when they brought it to the house where the baby was located. The mom was in the kitchen when Chopper suddenly attacked Kylie biting her head as the baby sat in her car seat, killing the baby.

Fura KNEW Chopper was aggressive (in the 10 day period of ownership) - he had already been bitten Fura and aggressed another child as well as getting into a fight with another animal. Chopper was not on leash at the time he attacked the baby.

Fura was just sentenced to jail for 6 months and 3 years probation and was orderered not to own animals during that time.

You know, we hear stories about kids who taunt our pups and get bit (or not). But this story was so sad because a 120 lb rottie fell into the hands of a KID, because it was "cool"? and an innocent infant was mauled to death in just seconds due to ignorance. But the silver lining is that this guy will see bars for being an idiot and that is a relief - all too often, responsible pet owner get frustrated by the idiocy of irresponsible humans who think dogs are for the coolness factor.

Chopper was put down by animal control.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: How often to you give them a bath?
« on: November 12, 2008, 10:35:26 am »
Odin gets a bath once every 6 weeks during the summer and 3 months during the cooler months. We bathe him outside so that has everything to do with it.

Plus, when he goes through his twice a year hormone cycle thing (I equate it to a bitch in heat), I bathe him. :)

Oh, and anytime I can get the kids to contribute, well that helps.

As a puppy, we didn't bathe very often at all - didn't want to facilitate skin allergies. I think his first real bath was at a year.

Its been a while since I last posted (sorry...health problems). This is amazing that it is as common as it is. Awesome!

Odin is doing fantabulous. Still has his little bald spot. Vet says its fine (just where he hits it when he wacks the wall, fridge, table, chair, corner...you name it).

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Re: number of dogs allowed??

Wow, thanks for all the input you guys. Looks like I am going to have to be careful! Honestly I wouldn't mind paying an extra fee to keep all my dogs with me. Kinda like how I have come to expect paying HUGE security/pet deposits whenever I move into a new rental. :o But I am excited about the prospect of leaving the southeast, at least for a while. It's gonna be hilarious when I drive my van full o' dogs across the country!! :D

I'll be doing some research! I want to find a place that will be just right for me and the pack. :)

Hope there are lots of photo stops of that trip/move!  :-)  Maybe Bpo stops so we can take pics for you!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Ear infections
« on: February 23, 2008, 11:43:45 pm »
I've seen that recipe before and have heard it has very pos results.  I'm just leery of the staining aspect.

Odin is floppy ear and had a nasty infection that lasted 6 months during his 2nd yr.  By 2.5, he was cleared up and they smelled good -although he now HATES to let me clean them.

WELL the other day on our monthly bath, I put in our cleanser and squished around.  When I wiped the outer canal,  my nail nicked his ear and it led to a topical infection just inside the canal.  Poor baby.  I didn't know it right away-the shaking shaking jingle jingle (a mastiff shake cannot go unnoticed so repeated shaking becomes a bit, errrr, irritating).  I thought we got water in the ear but upon inspection, saw the scratch he had managed to rescratch and it stayed moist.
I always feel bad for his ears.

Does anyone have a relatively easy to make or inexpensive wash that I could try to wash out his ears that would break up the wax but require less rubbing?  No staining, though!  Anything would be helpful!

In Texas, It was two dogs and 1 cat or 1 dog and 2 cats.....no more than 3 animals total but that was in a regular single family detatched home in a neighborhood.

In homes with acerage, the numbers increased.

In condos......de creases.

Then rentals always have their own restrictions.

In Texas!  :)
