Akita Pictures / Re: Butch
« on: February 20, 2008, 03:12:23 am »
My groomer said that she thought he has cattle dog markings. I can see that but I was told on another forum that while a spoted Akita is not common it's not unheard of. I did some research and there is another breed between an Akita and a Sheeba that is a medium size, that it's gaining popularity because so many people dont have room for 120 lb dog but don't want a small dog either.

It really doesn't matter what he is, I still love him. The only reason I wonderd was because I was researching temperment. With an APBT that could have been an issue but it hasn't so far.

This is Butch we think he is a 1 year old Akita mix. Any thoughts?  He is about 25" and about 65 lbs I know that is small.

Chopper is good in the crate it's Butch that is the problem. And I guess I really wanted to know if there is a good way to get Butch used to the crate, When I said I though it was unfair I ment that Chopper is always the one the goes in the crate because she is so good in it and when I put Butch in he literally barked and cried for 2 hours. I didn't want to let him out while he was whining becuase I didn't want to reward that behavior but it was 1am and I had to work the next day and he was keeping me up. Also durring The day while I'm at work Butch is confined to my small spare bedroom. And chopper gets the run of the house. Or they are in pen's outside if the weather permits.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / crateing
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:10:22 am »
I have 2 dog's one I have had since she was a puppy and the other is a stray I recently found. Chopper is crate trained and it has been very useful because they need to be seperated when eating and sometimes Chopper get a little to rambunctious for Butch (the stray). My issue is this. I seems alittle unfair that Chopper always has to be crated because Butch doesn't react well to the crate. Any suggestions on how to handle this?

I am taking chopper to obedience training and they guanentee that they can stop any unwanted behavior even agression. I have to send her away for 6 weeks and it cost $1200 but they guarante she will never jump a fence again, to me it's worth is as normal obedience classes wont address this issue, also if she ever develops a new issue they will fix that too.

I had an APBT and an american. They were adopted right around the same time and we were very careful to socialize them. We still had 2 fights over the course of a year. It got worse after the pit was attacked by some random Rodesian Ridgback at the park. After that she wasn't takin any crap form any dog....then we moved adn they don't allow pit's at dog parks here. The american doesn't live with us anymore because he was my brothers and they moved out when he took a job in another state. I finally got a another dog when a stray Akita wandered into my yard and befriended the pit. I don't have to seperate and rotate but I do feed them seperatly and they are seperated when I'm at work. My pit is in no way food agressive it's the akita, the 2 bully's ate out of the same bowl at the same time never had a problem at meal time. Both times involved toys and generaly happened when chopper (the pit) was tired and cranky

I'll prob get ethier another APBT or Americal Bulldog but if I have the room I would love a Swissie.

But since I have 2 very young dogs now it will be a very long time.

Did she address dog vs dog tug? That is really where my concern lays.

Chopper is really good with drop it,(it's her best command, She is going for more intensive training soon) Butch on the other hand has much better manners but is not quite as good with drop it but when him and Chopper play he ALWAYS looses.
They are the same size but the pit is much stronger than the Akita. I haven't had him long and he was thin when I got him, (he was a stray) and he's only about a year old so he will probably catch up strength wise soon.

I have an Akita mix and a Pitbull. I have heard that you shouldn't let dogs play tug, but my pit will grab a sock or a towel and drop in front of the akita to get him to play tug with her. should this be avoided or is it ok? It has not yet caused any problems between them.
