General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Briscoe is losing his fur!!!
« on: December 05, 2009, 12:15:57 pm »
Briscoe has been trying to eat his tail...  (he had hot spots on his back and tail)and is losing fur on it.  I've kept it clean and have been putting antiseptic on it so he's not really biting it anymore.  My big concern is, when's his fur gonna start growing back????  I hate the way his tail looks right now.

You can also go to second hand furniture shops.  I found Briscoe a wooden day bed-couch-futon looking thingy for 35 dollars.  Its about the size of a love seat but a little lower to the ground... and had the most GOD AWFUL cushions on it (nothing a blue clearance twin size fitted sheet from Kmart couldn't fix).  Briscoe absolutly loves it.  He lays on it an looks out the windows in my sunroom all day long.
And I got cheap throw pillows from Big Lots and a cheapy comforter thing from Goddwill to put on it, too.  Briscoe knows its his bed and if anyone sits on it, they have to deal with him scooting them off the couch over time.(he's got a big butt)
 ;D ;D ;D

He does look like he has am awkward gait.  But then again, he's still a puppy.

If you haven't already, I'd take him to the vet and have him looked at (xrays and such).  A vet that is very familiar with large breed dogs should be able to tell you if there's something wrong.

But, my Briscoe had a "prancy" walk as a pup, and there's nothing wrong with his hips...  So, it could be just growing "pains"...

Well, honestly, if you can prove that she gave you a two year gaurantee, I'd take her to court, in two different ways:

It sounds, and I'm saying "sounds" only because I don't have all the information, that she committed fraud - by promising you a healthy dog to get money out of you and knowingly not delivering on that promise. So you could technically civilly sue her for the money you paid for your pup, AND for vet bills (past and present... possibly future)

And, honestly, depending on how much you paid for the dog, plus the money you will have to spend keeping your dog as healthy as you can and as comfortable as possible, you may also be able to have her charged criminally.

Depending on the state and county you live in, you may want to speak with your local police department.

Hope this helps some.  These measures won't really effect how your pup grows and any pain he may go through, but it something that you can do to help you feel a little less powerless.

Saints have a pretty big weight range...  From what I understand, and I'm not an expert in all Saints, just mine... they can get up to around 260 pounds.

I personally haven't seen one that big, but apparently they can get that way.

Briscoe's dad, Rusty, was a runt... he weighed only 106 pounds.

He knows his Mama...  I take him out with me all the time.  Even to the bar I go to every now and again (they are very pet friendly, the bartenders bring their pups in all the time) and he always reacts the way I do to people... If I like them, he likes them... If I don't, he doesn't either.  I just found it rather amusing that he doesn't like my ex AT ALL...(my ex's dog happens to think I'm awesome, by the way)
 ;D ;D ;D

I am very sorry to hear about your pup.  You are right, it sounds like someone deliberately hit your animal.  And take this to heart:  no matter how evil your townsfolk think you are, nothing justifies deliberately running down a family pet.  That is cruel.  And karma is a bitch.

So, Me and Briscoe have had an odd development...

I'll give ya'll a little bit of background before I go into the humorous part of my story:

Now, my boy has grown up alot.. he's 2.5 years old and weighs a lean 170 pounds and is around 36 inches tall (he won't quit licking me long enough for me to get an accurate measurement).  He's SO big, that instead of a dog bed, he has his own couch that I bought for $35.00...
And Briscoe is what I like to call my "big dorky dog"...  He's 170 pounds of pure spazz... He's well trained, but he has his goofy, happy moments... (have you ever seen a 170 pound St. chase his tail?  HILARIOUS!!!!)  But he's a great, big lover boy... Like most big dogs are.  He's never met a person or animal he didn't absolutely love (except the squirrels in my tree).

Until NOW...

I got divorced last month (Yay!!!) and my ex, Danny, and I decided that when we separated, we would separate our dogs.  Well, when we did this, we decided, for the sake of the dogs, to do a sort of "puppy visitation" to make the transition a little easier on them.

Everything was going ok, until a few months ago, Briscoe developed what I like to call a "healthy dislike" (no aggression) for my ex, much to my amusement and his chagrin.

Briscoe completely ignores him.  When Danny comes over to see him, Briscoe just lays down somewhere (usually by the air conditioner)and rolls his eyes and gives Danny a huge "Hmph" in dog speak.

It's good to know that even if MY taste in men has been questionable, my dog knows what's up...

My ABSOLUTE favorite are the parents who bring their toddlers to the BIG dog park and let them run around.

Let me explain - The town where I live had the intelligence to put in 2 adjacent dog parks: one for younger puppies and little dogs and one larger park for Big puppies and Big Dogs.  Both parks have the normal legal dsiclaimers and rabies vaccination requirments (and animal control frequently stops by to do a check), but on the BIG dog park, there is a very large sign that says - ENTRY OF CHILDREN UNDER 6 IS NOT RECOMMENDED, ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED -ENTER AT OWN RISK.  The town I live in is one of the top 5 dog friendly towns in the nation.

Even with that HUGE sign, it never fails.  I go to the dog park with my two Saints and someone inevitably brings in a a 4 year old and lets them run around all wild.  Now, my dogs know that the park is the ONE place where they get to be all stupid and rambunctious, so they run around and act like fools.  Just imagine 2 dogs of at least 150 pounds each running at full speed, cavorting and having a good time with the 15 other dogs in the park.  Enter the 4 year old who runs strait into the middle of the dogs who are running around.  now my dogs are GREAT with kids...but kids aren't always great with my dogs.  inevitably, the kid's gonna get knocked down and most likely terrified by the large number of large dogs who come over to sniff it and make sure its okay.

Now, I'm pretty vigilant when it comes to my boys, so I'll call them to me before the screaming mother starts, well, screaming.  But I always get yelled at for some kid getting knocked over or crying because my big dog(s) scared the little snot.  I always wanna say, DID YOU SEE THE BIG FLIPPING SIGN????????????  This is the DOG PARK, not the KID PARK.  Take your kid to the little dog park if you want him to paly with dogs!!!!!!!!!!!  It isn't my fault that you're an idiot and an irresponsible parent!!!!

I get peeved when an adult calls my dogs "Beethovens" - They're Saint Bernards people. I understand it when kids say it, but ADULTS talking to another adult whith no children present is a sign of ignorance to me.

"is that a Beethoven?" - puh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That and the "don't they have problems with aggression?"
AGGRESSION?  Have they even MET a Saint before now?!?!?!?!

OK,  I know CUJO was a scary movie, but really, if you broke into my house and I'm not there, Rusty and Brisco are more likely to lick you to death and show you where I keep the good china and my jewelry...my dogs can find much tastier snacks than stupid human...

I understand exactly how you feel...  I get it all the time about Rusty and Brisco (my two Saints)

"What kind of dogs are those?"  -ignorant mom at Petco

"They're Saint Bernards." -me

"Nooo, they can't be. are they mixed with Pyrenees or Collie or something?" Ignorant mom

"Uh, no." -Me

"Well Their Fur is Really Fluffy." -Ignorant Mom

"Saint bernards Can have rough, longer coats or Smooth, Shorter coats.  These Two happen to be the former.  And they've just been bathed." - Me

"I don't think They are Saint Bernards, Your Little one (Brisco, who is nowhere near to being full grown and is already a lean 150 pounds at 13 months) isn't BIG enough."  - Ignorant Mom

"Mommy, Their Beethoven's"  - Ignorant Mom's Super Intelligent Little Girl who has just come out of the Bird room at Petco (I really hate it when my dogs are called Beethovens, but in this case, I was thankful)

No, I have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE as to what kind of dog I own... >:(

Well, Rusty (the older one) is about 5 years old now, and Brisco has just turned 1, So he's a bit bigger than he was in that picture up there (by about 120 pounds).  Briso refuses to stay still long enough for me to take a good picture of him - I'm going through Saint Bernard Young Adulthood right now and he's still full of puppy energy, but weighs 150 pounds.
