Hi,

We did a mixed breed analysis from Wisdom MX as part of thier initial study with the Vet Clinic I was working at at the time. It was done before they released the tests to the public. Here is my Abigail's results, and a picture of Abby (the little brown girl next to  our Pyr Ollie). So you can get an idea of what to expect.

Based on Abigail's behavior and appearance I believe this analysis. However, some people got bizarre results. Like a dog who looked like an apricot poodle/bichon frise mix came back as a rat terrier husky mix...

27% Australian Shepherd, 25% Rough Coated Collie
Small percentage St. Bernard, West Highland White Terrier
--the packet comes with a brief breed description of the major breeds of dog they determine your dog to be a mix of as well--

Great Dane Discussions / Re: Another Dane Question
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:34:55 am »
Everyone has given fantastic suggestions so far. Try weeding out the possibility of a food allergy first. If not, you may need to take him to the vet to have him tested and make sure he isn't having an outbreak of demodex mange or some sort of pyoderma (skin infection). These things can happen if your dog is stressed or come on the heels of an allergic reaction and require veterinary attention to treat.

Also, as far as the licking on his wound are concerned... be careful. Large breed dogs and especially danes have a tendency to obsessivly lick small wounds, itchy spots, etc. Especially if they are stressed and can cause what are called lick granulomas and hot spots. If you are concerned at all you should contact your vet!

:) best of luck to you in your new adventure into the life of a Dane parent!!

Well I am glad to hear you have the right attitude about all of this! I will be sending positive vibes your way and hope for a speedy recovery for Cattabrie. But just keep on laughing! Thats all you can do in a life with Danes, isn't it? Hang in there!!

Great Dane Discussions / Training an adult Dane in house manners??
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:26:04 am »
Hello all,

So you have probably read Odinn's story in my previous posts. I went into a little bit of how he is acting in the house... and I could REALLY use some help with that!! I have never brought in a fully grown young male dane who had not been inside a house since puppyhood, needless to say it is not going very smoothly.

We have lost our TV, china cabinet, and a couple of meals so far. He is just so boisterous and he WILL NOT settle once he comes inside, he has his "happy tail" whipping around knocking our skin-kids over, jumping on the couch and sqashing us and the kids, putting his nose into everything and knocking everything possible over. Let me make it clear that I DO NOT BLAME HIM for this behavior. He is excited and curious and I feel that it is only natural, but he is going to hurt one of the kids or myself (as you can all see I'm 9 months pregnant) and we need to address the problem in as quick a fashion as possible. Does anyone have any helpful hints?

He is doing very well and has not had any accidents inside (yet) the only problem is he is a bull in a china cabinet!!

Great Dane Discussions / Odinn and Valkyrie together again! :)
« on: August 18, 2009, 10:52:49 am »
Hi everyone!
Some of you may remember me from last year when I was active on the site. Life got hectic and took over and I've been away for a long long time! But I am back!

You may also remember little Miss Valkyrie, my rescued merlequin dane puppy. Well she is all grown up now, though she is a petite little dane girl weighing in at only 95 lbs. She's a fantastic little gal!

The rescue we worked with in removing Val and her brothers and sisters from thier "breeder" contacted me recently asking whether I could take in her brother who had been adopted into a new home where he had also suffered abuse and neglect. This poor boy didn't even have a name. He was chained in thier backyard getting beaten up by the family's doberman, who was not on a chain. He has clearly not been fed properly and is sooo skinny :(. You can see the results of his malnutrition, his hips bow out, his joints are wobbly, and he already has tooth decay at 13 months old. He is also covered in little scars from his ordeal with the other dog. We have given him his name from when we fostered him back, Odinn. Odinn also has some problems with sight and hearing though he is not completley deaf or blind, he suffers from night blindness and can only hear extreme pitched sounds, very high or very low. This is a congenital issue he has had since puppy-hood.
He has only been back with us for a couple of days and it has been a chore. He has clearly not been in a home (and I'm sure you all can see the problems that arise from a full grown dane running around tail a-wagging so excited to be loved). Some of the casualties have been our china cabinet, flat screen TV, and of course, dinner. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we will get him healthy and well adjusted and he will probably stay with us for the rest of his young life.

Just thought you all would enjoy hearing this poor boy's story! And now for the pictures! I will post more of his condition later on, for now just happy ones :)

I had a problem at our last house with mice as well but with hubby deployed I couldn't stand putting out traps as I would be horrifically depressed and probably traumatized if I ever found one. And I'm sure we all know the problems with using poison, even if kept "away from the other animals" in the house. I pretty much got up at 4-5am every morning to super clean all the surfaces of the kitchen before making breakfast until I allowed a stray cat to come inside. (enter "Noah" who became our family member, and only cat shortly after) Even declawed he's the best mouser I've ever seen, and I felt a bit better because at least it was the "natural order" of things.

Glad your little mouse won't be bothering you anymore. But hope his end was quick :(

:)

thank you all so much I'm checking into those sites right now. I only want the best for my girl. With Oliver on a home cooked organic diet (which I can't afford for two giant beast dogs) and Abigail lifting her nose at anything but Purina (ugh, I know give me a break, she's crazy) I haven't looked into natural diets for a long long time. And my hubby would probably murder me if I went to expensive :p

thanks again BPOers!!!
