Beautiful boy! I have a question for you--
Did you have to get Toby certified to go to the nursing home, or are you just able to take him?

Hey there,
We first called and spoke with the activities director. We brought Toby into the nursing home, with her invite, and to let her observe how he reacted to the residents and their walkers and wheelchairs. Nothing phased him. By her observing him she said she would love for us to bring him regularly. There are some nursing homes that request you bring in a state registration of the dog, Texas has that.

Just call and ask to speak to the activities director. Let them know about your dog and its demeanor. Let them know that you would really like to volunteer your dog to pay visits to the residents on a weekly basis. If that nursing home allows animals to come through, ask to bring the dog in for the director to observe their interactions. Hope this helps.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Update on getting Bear
« on: August 27, 2008, 07:10:35 am »
We did not get Bear like we were suppose to. We were suppose to get him this past Sunday. The lady Tammy called me and said the woman holding him said he apparently jumped the fence and ran away Saturday afternoon. I felt this was weird, so I looked on Craigslist and come to find out the woman posted him for sale, again, on Friday. Right after she promised to deliver him to Tammy on Sunday. SO she sold him to someone else when he had already been sold to Tammy and We were waiting for him. Our hearts ache and we pray that he went to a home that knows about the Pyrenees and how to handle him since he has already had a hard life. The woman told Tammy he was 2 1/2 yr old and then she posted him online as 6 months old. This woman has no clue of what is going on!!

Anyways, let's pray he went to someone that will not abandon him and treat him like a Prince to help make up for what he has been through. And for anyone who does not know Bears story I attached it below. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers for this poor guy.

Hope

This is Bear's story:
His owners came out here to visit their mother. He came along with a little dog, too. The couple up and left one day taking their little dog and leaving Bear behind. Apparently the woman's mother was left to care for Bear. She did not want to. So instead, she left him out in her backyward for a week (in Texas heat) without food or water, apparently waiting for him to die. The neighbor spotted him and asked the woman if she wanted him. She stated "No! I am not about to take care of someone else's damn dog!" She asked if she can have him. To which the woman replied, "Yes, but if you are not serious and do not take him I am going to take him out and shoot him." The woman took Bear in. She knew nothing of the Pyrenees. She said his fur was matted and would not wash out and supposedly took him to a groomer who shaved him down to the skin...even his head and down to his toes was shaved. She put him on Craig's list and a lady named Tammy spotted the add. She had no idea what a Pyrenees was and thought it to be a small dog. She lives in a two bedroom apartment with 4 people. Well, the woman shows up at Tammy's place with Bear. Needless to say Tammy was at a loss of words to see and huge hairless dog come through her door. Tammy said that Bear looked like the woman shaved him herself because it looked like a serious hack-job. And his weight is about 50 lbs.The woman told Tammy that she needs to give him vaccinations from a farm store every two weeks. And that right before she brought him over she had just fed him a "roast". She said that her and her husband do not want him because they want to get a different breed. So Tammy tried for a few nights and realized it was too hard. Well, she told my neighbor who told me about Bear. A week of missed phone calls and crap, we finally got into contact with Tammy and come to find out she had the woman pick Bear back up to hold onto him til she moved into a bigger place by the end of the month. Well, she is not getting that place byut does not want Bear with this woman. Cause when she picked Bear back up, he was crying and yelping trying to pull away and get back to Tammy and her kids. So here we are...waiting for Tammy to receive Bear once more tomorrow for us to go pick up and bring home. This is one crazy story and a rough time Bear has gone through. And this woman that currently has Bear stated she cannot afford to feed him, but they are getting another dog to exceed their allowed amount. So they keep him out back for majority of the day...with no fur or room to walk around.

Hi. I originally posted on the General forum. We have been on here for at least a week and have heard from great people already. Toby is our big boy and he belongs to my 1 1/2 yr old son. He hand feeds him and lays on him...it is too much. My 3 1/2 yr old son loves to throw the ball for TOby and get him to chase. Toby pays eekly Saturday visits to a local nursing home and is highly liked. He is such a gentle giant and he just turned 1 this month.
It is great to see a community for people witg big dogs and how everyone praises each other. This is alot better than sites where people judge and make fun of the other pets and people. This truly is a community family.

Tomorrow morning (Sunday)we are expecting to pick up an abandoned male Pyrenees named Bear. Now Bear is apparently 2 1/2 yrs old, no bigger than Toby, and is half his weight at about 50 lbs. This is Bear's story:

We are anxious to get him here and introduce him and Toby through the fence. Toby is going to be in our neighbors yard and Bear in ours. And after a few hours we are going to introduce them on the leash. First act of aggression will cause them to be turned around to calm the confrontation. But, because Bear is 50lbs, apparently very playful like a puppy with other dogs, we are not too worried about them fighting and Toby being allowed to be the alpha male. But, it is always a trial when introducing any new pet into the house.

Wish us luck and we will introduce you to Bear when he gets home finally.

Thank you all for your support. We went today and Joan was bathing. So we will see her next Saturday. Toby is getting more eager to visit and is walking faster towards rooms. He is great at approaching the elderly. He always seems to stop infront of them with his side to them. Then he slowly edges his head to their lap; he appears to know to take it easy. It is insane at how natural he is at this. He loves to lie on the floors next to beds and the residents love it. They say he can sleep there all day if he wanted to.
When my two little boys are not in high gear for the day, the visits become a family affair and the residents love seeing my little boys and Toby. It is so nice.

The offers for advice are outstanding and deeply appreciated.

Thanks for commenting on Toby. He is a great boy our here and is representing our Air Force family great!

We take Toby to a local nursing home. We started a month and a half ago (about) and the fist few days we exposed him to it he kept trying to pull me down a certain wing. Well, the third visit, once he was more familiar with the place, I let him lead me where he wanted to go. And next thing you know he heads straight to this certain wing and straight into a room as if he was on a mission. I announced our presence and noticed a woman sitting in a wheel chair. She was blind and lost both of her legs to diabetes. Her name is Ruth and Toby went straight towards her. He immediately took to her. He sat down infront of her with his head straight up, usually he lays down, and started to lick the ends of what was once her legs.  He always stayed perked up for her to reach him. Well, this last visit, 1 1/2 wks ago, he pulled to Ruth's room only to find her not there. He stood there and mellowed his mood and slowly walked out of her room. We found out that she went to the hospital the day before. Usually Toby resists leaving because he is still not a big fan of riding in the truck. But after that he had no problem walking out and getting in the truck. I think he missed his buddy.    :'(  But we cannot wait til we can go back this Saturday and find out if she is back.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Newcomer and proud of my Pyr
« on: August 15, 2008, 06:53:48 pm »
Hi,
Just started here today and cannot wait to read more postings and seeing the advice. Our Toby is 6 months new to our family. He is 3/4 Pyrenees and 1/4 Anatolian Shepard. We got him from a woman claiming to be a "breeder" and come to find out her dogs just bred and she didn't even take care of the pups right before selling them. We got him for free, thank goodness we have him. She never took them to the vets and left them in the back field without associating them with anyone, vehicles, or anything. It took him the whole 6 months we have had him to get him unafraid of going on walks or taking a ride in the truck. We have gotten him a volunteer job going to a local nursing home and the residents there love him and wait for him. He is great with my two little boys who are 3.5 and 21mo. There is no other dog I could have asked for. Granted he was a great challenge and stubborn, but with a stern voice and many rewards he responds to hand commands and quick sounds. I look forward to meeting other owners.

We have a 1 yr Pyr and he is fine alone. He is busy running along the fenceline with the neighbor dogs and getting attention from us. He wants to play, but he is happy just playing with our two little boys, taunting our 8yr old cat, and sleeping on the kitchen floor. He sleeps alot, but we take him on evening walk or morning walks, whenever it is colder. We keep him busy by taking him every Saturday to a local nursing home. Giving them a purpose, or a job, makes them happy. He is so gentle and is very patient. I would advise trying something like that. If you are worried about your Pyr sleeping or feeling alone, give 'em something that is for them only, a job. A visit somewhere or yard helping. Anything that keeps them involved like a kid. It works for us and he is great.
