General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Inconsistent stools
« on: May 26, 2009, 06:27:39 am »
Hi all,
I've just got a quick question about Baxter, i know he's not a big paw but it's all relevant.  For the past couple weeks i've been noticing when i take him out that his stools are good and solid but then we keep walking and not 5 mins later he goes again and his stool is very loose and sometimes a different shade in colour.  i just wanted to get some ideas of what might be going on before taking him into the vet.  He's on Orijen, and seems to be doing fine on it, and other then that all he eats is raw hides.  does anyone have any ideas of what it could be?
Thanks for the input!

ohhh yes, we love him and are in the process of filling out his adoption papers...so much for attempting this "fostering" thing.  I don't know how many more i could foster, i think i'd keep 'em all. ::) :D

Well we might not have our newf yet, but we're still on the look out for one.  So in the meantime to get my doggy fixes, we've started fostering a little guy.  I'm not going to lie he might end up being a foster failure...unle ss of course the right family comes around then i'd be more then happy to see him go, (although it may be hard).  We're not sure of the breed he is, but i think he's got some terrier in him.  His names Baxter and he was rescued from the side of the road and put in a kill shelter set to be PTS last Tuesday. He's about 1.5yrs, andI think this is the calmest quietest dog i've ever been around!  I thought he was mute until i accidently stepped on his little paw, reassuring me he is NOT mute.
He seems to have a little bit of an ear infection so we're waiting for the rescue organization to get back to us on when we could take him to their vet, but in the meantime I've tried using the vinegar solution i found on here, and it seems to have calmed the red irritation down a bit.
well without further ado, please meet Baxter:

Oh Chantel, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Look at it as a blessing in disguise! I too have just gone through a similar situation, and let me tell you it sucks!  I know the feeling of wanting a puppy so bad, but i think if your turly devoted to getting a newf you should stick it out and eventually you will find the right breeder.  It might not be in the near future that you find a puppy but in the end the right one will find you, and you'll look back at this as the path leading to your forever friend, with no regrets!
I hope everything works out with whatever you decide to do, just don't rush into any decissions quite yet.
Good luck!

Breeding Questions & Information / Re: Why oh Why
« on: February 05, 2009, 03:38:48 pm »
Oh la la, this is why i'm not a breeder :D
I think its exactly what i'm doing like Lin said, humanizing the situation.  Are there any specific questions i should be asking the breeder regarding this topic then?
Thanks for the input guys!

Breeding Questions & Information / Why oh Why

I think im going to pull out my hair, i found another breeder started asking the questions you know all the formalities before getting to close, and excited about puppies, and ask to see the pedigrees of the dogs shes planning on breeding and THEY SHARE THE SAME FATHER does anyone else see a HUGE problem with this?!  ayayaya!
..onto the next

I had watched this episode on t.v about a month ago, and wanted to share this but with my technically savy skills i couldn't locate a link to it, so the moment had passed.  I'm so happy to see this post! it is just so disheartening to see some of the animals in those states.  I specifically remember the Rhodesian ridgeback and thinking "why would they breed a dog like this knowing that its counterintuiti ve to the health of a dog."  I'm happy to hear they are starting to take some action.

Ah shes as cute as a button.  If you live close it'd be best to keep her away from me.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / the hunt continues...
« on: January 13, 2009, 03:49:36 am »
After sending an email saying we were interested in the landseer but wanted to first meet the kennel next week as per agreed upon, prior to these shinanigans, the breeder responded, and told us she was having a family come and look at our puppy and that she needed a "firm commitment" from us that we were going to take it.  I can understand where shes coming from as she said she doesn't want to be stuck with a puppy and no home.  We've decided to take the deposit back and continue the hunt.
I am hopeful we'll find the right doggy!  But let me tell you, logic/reason do not go hand in hand with impatience and puppies haha

Thanks for the understanding guys.  I think for me i just had my heart set on a black newf (and i had specified it with the breeder)so i wasn't really expecting to be told otherwise.  I think we'll take some advice and go check out the pup (its a 7 hour drive...) but i think it will be worth it, and really the main thing is that the pup is happy and healthy!
Besides all the more reason to get another one later on  ;)

Groans, Gripes, Brags & Boasts / a mini vent
« on: January 09, 2009, 10:35:59 am »
As some of you may know, i've been in the market for a Newf, and have spent countless days researching breeders/clubs/you name it, and thought we had found a very good breeder!  I've been speaking with her back and forth since october, and put a down deposite on a Newfoundland pup before they were born.  They were born around xmas, and its a blended litter of landseers and newfs. i've been super excited about bringing the little thing home.  HOWEVER! (isn't there always one of these...)  today i received an email from the breeder saying she could only offer us a landseer.  I was very specific in wanting a newf, and now i feel like ive been deflated  :-[
I dont know what to do. BAH! Who would have thought it would be this difficult!

ok end of venting.
p.s  Thank you for the recommendation s on getting the dog to stop jumping, we started holding his paws while he was jumping and it worked like a miracle!!

I just arrived at my parents place, and they have a beautiful 2 yr old golden...his only down fall is that they haven't put a lot of training into him.  I think the only things he knows how to do are sit and down, but thats all to his descretion anyways!  He has a huge problem with jumping up onto me, and other people.  He's so freakin leggy and at 80lbs its like having a gazelle come at you.  I have already learned that you do NOT turn your back to him or he WILL tackle you.  It is a serious problem, i can't even walk out of the washroom without dealing with this, and i don't know how to counteract it!  If anyone has some quick training techniques, (or ways i can come out of this fully intact)just for the next week and half, i would LOVE to hear some suggestions.  really i'll try anything.

I will give him this...He's very cute, while sleeping.
