She's pretty spoiled by getting to stay inside most of the time because I stay at home.  But if we're gone she gets to lay under our big covered patio with ceiling fans blowing on her.  However right now she has to be kenneled if we're gone because of her 6 weeks of no activity because of her OCD.

My bad, Lily is currently taking Metacam (it's supposed to help with pain and a little bit of an anti-inflamatory)  - she took Rimadyl some time back.  I asked my vet about the Glucosamine and he said it wouldn't hurt her to take it, but that it won't "fix" the problem either.

We have had Lily on Rimadyl pretty regularly.  The vet said it was okay to decrease the inflamation and pain.  The x-ray was also read by a veterinary radiologist who also had the same opinion about it being and OCD lesion.  Our vet was very encouraging regarding her not needing surgery, saying that very few dogs truly "need" the surgery.  That made me feel better knowing he wasn't one of those vets that views surgery as a quick fix only option.  I would be very interested in hearing more in detail about your supplemental regimin.  I have heard something about glucosomine for dogs - is there a such thing?  I wonder if it might help.  I know my grandma had a lot of success with it for her arthritis...

I really want her to be back to her old self.  She is so playful and loves to run our property (only 2 acres, but she just loves having a job and running the fence lines).  I hate feeling self helpless, and I wish I could just explain to her why she has to be taken out on a leash now without freedom.  It is just heartbreaking!

Yes, we have a lover and a hugger too.  Before we know it we'll wake up in the morning and she's in bed between my husband and I with her head on the pillow between us.  She loves to snuggle... There's nothing like getting love from these sweet dogs...

Hi - my name is Lori and my husband is Jason.  We have only 1 Kuvasz, Lily.  She is a family dog, so she's inside most of the time.  She looks for trouble I must say, and a thief.  She keeps us on our toes, that's for sure.  She is so affectionate though, you can't stay mad at her long.

What cute puppies you have... In the litter Lily was born in the mother had 15 pups, 3 still born.  The breeder was breeding her again a year later...that's very honorable that you're spaying her...I am sure you must have been in disbelief when all those puppies kept coming...

Michelle, I am very sorry for your loss also...I bet it was so emotional...I love the photo of mommy with her new kitty baby, what a great idea.  They look so sweet together.

Kuvasz Discussions / Does anyone know anything about OCD?

Our 2 year old Kuvasz began limping so we took her to our vet thinking maybe she had a sprain.  After two weeks of no improvement we had our vet x-ray her to find out she has early arthritis, OCD in her front right leg.  We don't know much about it, other than she may need surgery.  We have her on a very low activity regimin for 6 weeks to see if she gets any better.  Does anyone have any personal experience with OCD.  Does anyone know if it's genetic?  Thanks!

Her name is Lily.  Intelligent? Yes, too much for her own good!! She has always been very photogenic, I guess because we have taken so many pictures of her from day 1.

Anyone thought of going into the pillow making business???  We've definitely don't have shortage of stuffing.  My groomer told me to draw a bath with warm to hot water...appare ntly this opens up the hair folicles and releases some hair...then bruch and blow dry... she also told me about a treatment that she does that completely removes that second coat...it just falls out..   if anyone's interested I can call and ask her what it's called.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Constant Itching?
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:26:10 pm »
Oh no, the itchies...  Our dog began itching the day we got her from the breeder (2 yrs ago).  She had little bumps on her tummy, which we thought were fire ant bites.  Don't feel bad about the vet thing - I too thought I was a hypochondriac. .. we have finally narrowed it down to yes, she has allergies, not a yeast infection, etc.  We have had vets that told us it was her food...so we put her on the expensive dog foods from the vet.. Finally we moved to San Antono and just miraculously ended up choosing a vet that specializes in allergies.  We are getting her tested in 2 weeks.  So hopefully we'll get an answer.  Allergy tests cannot tell you if the dog is allergic to food (chicken or beef).  It will eliminate pollen, cats, etc.  Our dog's itching seemed to migrate to different places on her body.  One week it would be under her arms, the next week her neck, the base of her tail...it just kept moving, well, it still does.  A food trial is very easy to do if you have only one dog...we use Purina LA from the vet.  We had a vet giving us duck and potato dog food, but when we started going to our new vet he said if she's allergic to poultry we wouldn't have noticed a difference in her itching...so I would recommend the above to try out.  It's made with fish product.  That is if you are going with the food allergy thing.

Does your pup have any bumps?

It just breaks your heart because they just seem so miserable...if they could only tell us...

Some things to think about, which you probably already have...  Does the breed have skin allergies? What about the dog shampoo you use?  Do you put carpet fresh or any chemicals on your carpet?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: To shave or not to shave. . .
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:07:22 pm »
Hi - I also live in TX and completely understand the heat issue.  I have a Kuvasz and they also have LOTS of hair.  We kept going back and forth about "to shave or not to shave" and we just finally did it.  We have now had it done 3 times... she is SO happy when she comes back from the groomers...she rubs all over things and is so affectionate.  BUT the Kuvasz also has black skin, so the sunburn thing isn't much of an issue for her.  Another amazing thing is when we let her coat grow in over the winter it was just georgeous!  You could always start with shaving underneath and then just trimming the legs and back -kind of blending it...

You may also want to call around to some groomers and ask for suggestions.  What part of TX do you live... we've lived in Austin and now near San Antonio - I could make a few suggestions if you live near us.

She quite a little character - she's inside most of the time, so I think she lacks some of the aloofness that most outside Kuvasz possess...
