Mixed Breed Discussion / Seperation Anxiety - Mine!
« on: July 11, 2008, 08:10:30 pm »
So, Ranger went to get his teeth cleaned today.  For him it was a relatively simple and painless procedure, but not so for me - I was a wreck!

This is the first time that I have had him anesthetized in the 4 years that I have had him, and I was crazy paranoid and worried.  He did NOT want to go off with the vet tech, and of course that broke my heart.  When I got home, I realized that I have never been in this house without him here with me.  Yeah, I was a little stressed.  (OK, OK, I got into the trash, and chewed the corner of the couch.  And I pee'd a little.)

So, of course, he came through fine.  The vet tech did tell me though that Ranger was actually quite scared, and wanted NOTHING to do with any of them. Then the vet comes out and shows me a picture he took of Ranger with his cell phone.  Guess what the big dork did?  He climbed into the vet's dirty laundry bin to hide... Yes, he tried to cram all 105 lbs. of himself into this tiny little bin in an attempt to hide from everyone.  The vet tried to send the picture to me, but we couldn't get it to work.  And I, being an even bigger dork than my dog is, cried when he was back with me in the car.

Hopefully, we won't have to go through this for another 4 years!  :D

I got my hair cut today, and as I was walking back to my car, I walked past a pay phone that someone had graffiti tagged "Tub" on.  I, of course, thought of you.  My phone doesn't have a camera on it, or I would have taken a picture for you...

How did Tub get ahold of spray paint?  Keep an eye on that hooligan boy!  ;D

Mixed Breed Discussion / My Misfortune, Your Enjoyment
« on: March 23, 2008, 10:38:44 pm »
For your reading pleasure - my evening thus far...

Tonight when I got home from work I let both dogs outside and joined them in the back yard to take the night air.  (OK, actually to clean up poop.)  Gwen gets down to business and Ranger is just wandering around the yard staring at the sky and eating grass.  So now I am cleaning poop AND yelling at Ranger not to eat grass.

By the time I am done cleaning the poop, Ranger still hasn't gone.  This isn't entirely out of the ordinary, since Ranger is very fussy about going out in the yard and is basically like a poop/pee camel when he wants to be.  He stores it up for when the time is just right.

I let dogs inside, take the trash and the poop bag up to the dumpster and come back inside to vacuum.  As I am vacuuming, Ranger starts running through the house.  To me this behavior could mean "Wheeee, I love the vacuum, c'mon vacuum, let's play" or "Eeeek, a vacuum.  I must flee."  I apparently don't speak the dialect of dog in which this means "Hey mommy, I am about to barf up all that grass I recently ate all over the carpet that you just vacuumed."  So, I miss the signal and that proceeds to happen.  All over the carpet I just vacuumed.

Ranger goes outside, and I clean up the carpet.  When I go to let him back in what do I see?  Yes, NOW he has pooped the massive stored-up poop he has been holding all day all over the yard I just cleaned.  Not just one pile, but a "walking" poop.  You know what I mean.  A "traveling" poop.

What has Gwen been doing this whole time?  Nothing bad really.  Just being normal Gwen - wandering around looking at the house like she has never seen it before, standing directly where I need to be, walking right through the barf, and just generally getting in my way.  Finally, I get fed up with her and put her outside too.  Where she starts eating grass.

And after all this is done I go in the kitchen and notice I left the lid to the trash can on the counter.  As I pick it up to put it back on the trash can, I accidentally push the thingy that opens the lid and the lid shoots up and whacks me in the boob.  Hard.

I think I am officially over tonight.   ;)

Mixed Breed Discussion / Dumb Question
« on: March 09, 2008, 10:17:15 pm »
OK, I have a dumb question...  Ranger potentially ate a bunch of Kleenex today - should I be concerned, or am I just doing my usual overly paranoid freak-out?

I found the chewed, (but remarkably still intact), Kleenex box on the floor when I got home from work, but not any chewed-up Kleenex.  So, I assume that the culprit devoured the evidence, because I can't find it anywhere else.  (I also assume it was Ranger, because that just ain't Gwen's style.  Plus he has been "acting out" a bit lately in the chewing paper-towel-ish type items department.)  I honestly can't remember if there were 2 Kleenex or 200 Kleenex in the box.

He is acting normal and of course, I am keeping an eye on him.  Should I be freaking as much as I am?

Mixed Breed Pictures / Lots of Dogs (And A Bunny)
« on: February 23, 2008, 09:36:17 am »
Well, I went to the biggest dog show that we have in this area today and I had a great time.  (I am working on getting over going places by myself).

I spent A LOT of time loving on the Pyrs in the meet-the-breed area - I was on the floor rubbing one little girl's belly while a big boy leaned his booty on my shoulder. Saw beautiful Danes, Newfies, Irish Wolfhounds, Bull Mastiffs, 2 gorgeous Leonbergers and so on.  I really wanted to see a Tibetan Mastiff in person (there were 3 entered) but I didn't get there early enough.  I did pet a Spinone and several Ibizan Hounds, neither of which I had ever met before.  (Of course I forgot to take the camera).

And, of course, I bought stuff.  The favorite seems to be a bright pink fleece bunny.  The game for the rest of the night round here is Win The Bunny.  Here are some pictures...

1) Ranger and Gwen vie for the bunny
2) Gwen wins the bunny and is a brat when Ranger gets near
3) Rangers investigates just how close he can get to the bunny before Gwen freaks. (Note the presence of several other toys in the vicinity, which are not good enough for him to play with because they are NOT THE BUNNY.

Ranger eventually retired to the couch to lick the arm of the couch and plan his revenge.  The bunny will be his eventually.  Gwen has to sleep sometime...

Gwen is a simple dog.  She is happy to lay on the floor, in the crate, or on her dog bed.  Sometimes my bed, if the mood strikes.

Ranger is another story.  Not only can he never be too comfortable, he is obsessed with my couch pillows and snuggles up to them at every opportunity.

He's not quite ready for Playdog...

Mixed Breed Pictures / Carnivorous Chair (funny)
« on: February 12, 2008, 06:04:17 pm »
Apparently, while I was posting earlier, the chair got hungry.  The kind of hungry only a dog named Ranger can satisfy.

I guess it didn't have time to finish digesting him before I turned around.

Never trust wicker.  ;D

When I looked over this morning and saw Ranger in this position on the couch, I could only surmise that he had taken up yoga.  Are we 100% sure a dog's back legs are supposed to do this?  :D

Anyone else have a picture of their dog practicing dog yoga?  Ranger calls this pose "Sunrise Salute to the Couch Pillow"...

Mixed Breed Discussion / Ranger's Story - A Tail of Celebrity Obsession
« on: January 26, 2008, 01:11:57 am »
I have a confession to make.  It's about Ranger, and it ain't pretty.  The Roo is on a rocky road to heartbreak.  Yes, Ranger is a fame whore.  He is a slut for celebrities.

It all started one day when we were walking in the park, and the actor who played The Grinch at the theatre I work at petted and payed attention to Ranger during a rehearsal break.  (You were there, Auntie Holly, remember?  We thought the guy might be an escaped mental patient because he was all sweaty and disheveled and dressed strangely and wearing what looked like electrodes taped to his body?  But that was just his mic.  Silly us.)  Ranger liked it.  Liked it a lot.  It felt good.  Better than regular petting.

His next encounter was a crush on a local news man doing a live weather segment in the park.  He wanted to pet Ranger, Ranger wanted to be petted by him.  But their love was not to be - Weatherguy had to go on the air and they were only able to strain towards each other longingly before we had to move away.  From then on every time we saw Weatherguy on TV, Ranger would perk up and pay attention.  If we saw him in the park, Ranger would try to go to him.  He even tried to jump into the open news van a couple times.  Still, it might have worked out if Ranger had not met another.

The man who stole Ranger's heart was James Avery.  That's right - Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.  He was appearing in one of our shows, and would be sitting outside the theatre every night around the time that Scott would bring the dogs down to pick me up from work.  At first their love was slow.  Tentative.  James Avery was in a wheelchair due to a leg injury, and Ranger gives the hard love.  But Ranger would not be denied.  He demanded to be noticed.  He showed the belly and clinched the deal.  Soon Ranger was getting that sweet sweet Uncle Phil petting every night.  It was Ranger's longest celebrity relationship to date.

When James Avery left, I thought things were back to normal.  Things calmed down.  Ranger stopped saying that celebrity hands just "feel different".  He stopped wearing a pashmina, draped just-so.  If I wanted to pet my dog, I didn't have to pretend to be my own agent and schedule a meeting.  I could breathe easy again.  Then Harvey Firestein called him "cookie" in the hallway one day, and it all came flooding back.

Now, we have just learned that Scott Bakula is starring in our latest show.  I think it is a very good thing that Ranger and I will no longer be spending our free time in the park (due to the Great Homeless Ex-Fiance' Incident of 2008).

Bakula dodged a 100-lb. hairy bullet, and he doesn't even know it.  :D

Anything Non-Dog Related / Bad Day. Super Bad Day (long).
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:19:01 am »
I had kind of a hard day today.  Without boring you with all the details, I saw someone I really didn't want to have to see.  This person, with whom I used to have a relationship and live with, is going through some hard times.  About the hardest that you can imagine.  He doesn't have a drug or alcohol problem or anything.  However, he is now homeless.  He has brought this all on himself, and has only himself to blame, but it is still hard to see him in the state he is in.  I tried for years to fix him and when I realized that no one can ever fix anyone, I tried at least to help.  But no one could make the changes or decisions that needed to be made except for him.  And he couldn't or wouldn't make them.

After supporting him financially for many years, I was no longer able to do it.  He went to stay with some family a few months ago.  We kept in touch, and I knew his situation was tenuous at best.  I was in the uncomfortable position of having to tell him more than once, when things were falling apart for him, that he couldn't come back and live with me.  I knew a few days ago that he was going to be kicked out and gave him numbers for shelters, etc.  He said he was coming back here, and I urged him to stay where he was, as he at least had a potential job coming up.  I think part of me just didn't want to deal with the potential of seeing him homeless, right in my own back yard.

And today I saw him.  Walking Ranger in the park where I work today I saw him.  He has been living in a tent for the past few days since he got back to San Diego.  He has no plan - no money, nowhere to go.  He didn't ask me for money, said that he knew he couldn't come home with me, and that I couldn't help him.  He mostly just petted Ranger and cried.  I could barely even meet his eyes.  I feel like crap.  Worse than crap.  I can't even describe it.  This is someone I used to love, was engaged to, and still care about very much.  But I can't be the one to save him anymore.  And I had to walk away from him today and leave him to God knows what.  I am so sad for him, but I am so mad too.  Part of me felt like I would die - so full of overwhelming emotion that I couldn't express even any little bit of it or I wouldn't be able to control it.  But a horrible part of me felt cold, like this was all too much and I shouldn't have to deal with it, and I just wanted to run to the car and drive away as fast as I could.  And I am mad that Ranger had to see him and get all excited and then be confused that he didn't come home with us - I have been crying over that all night.  I don't what to feel right now.  I just can't be the one to save him anymore.  Part of me feels like a horrible evil person, and part of me knows I did all I could.  And how do I deal with the possibility of seeing him there homeless when I go to work every day?  How do I not get pulled back in to his life and try to help him again, when I just can't?  It was a pretty good day until then, and now I just want to curl into a ball and rock...

Mixed Breed Pictures / No Snow
« on: December 16, 2007, 10:31:29 pm »
Yup, strangely enough, no snow in San Diego.  And I miss snow SO MUCH.

We all went up on the hill behind our house today to pretend there was snow, but throwing weed-balls at each other and building dirt-men with carrot noses just didn't feel the same.

Ranger and Gwen say "Happy Holidays" anyway, and send you some pictures from their day...  ;D

At some point prior to paranoid fear that my house might burn down, I decided to torture the dogs by dressing them up.

Someone left all these cardboard crown, flower, etc. cutouts in the "free zone" in our kitchen at work.  Of course, the minute I saw them my mind immediately turned to how I could make my dogs hate me more.  I present my own versions of a "flower child".

See that look in their eyes in the pictures?  That look says "There are two of us, Mommy, and only one of you.  And we have bigger teeth.  Don't push it, Mommy."   ;D

Mixed Breed Pictures / Where's Ranger?
« on: October 20, 2007, 06:26:38 pm »
Let's play a little game, shall we?   ;)

It's called "Where's Ranger?"...
Step 1 - realize that Ranger is not sitting on your lap or laying under your feet or wiping his wet face dog face on your bedding.  Decide to find where he is...

Step 2 - Look everywhere.  The bedroom?  Not there...  The bathroom?  Nope.  The dogcrate?  Nuh-uh.

Step 3 - Spot what appears to be a nose sticking out from the impossibly tiny space between the side of the couch and the wall.

Step 4 - Draw closer.  Yes, yes, it is definitely a nose!

Step 5 - Find Ranger crammed into the space into which no 100-lb dog could possibly fit unless they did not have a spine, or really any bones at all.  Notice he not only get he cram his massive fat booty into that space, he also TURNED AROUND!

Step 6 - Pry him out with a crowbar.

That's how you play "Where's Ranger"!!
