Golden Retriever Discussions / Not eating
« on: October 28, 2006, 05:37:29 pm »
My 7 month old Golden, itsn't eating like he used to, he used to eat 6 cups of food a day, now I have a hard time getting to eat half that much, he acts fine, plays goes to the bathroom normal, but it concerns me that he doesn't want to eat much, I've put canned food in his dry food, which works a couple times and then the just looks at it, also I've put that gravey stuff that Iams makes in it, he liked it the first couple of times I put it in his food, then he just didn't seem interested.
Is this normal???
I want him to eat, ya know,,,  How much should he be eating now??  Is it a growth thing, he doesn't need as much??  Today maybe he ate 3 cups of food, again he acts fine, but I'm so used to him eating like a hog, and growing like a weed, he is a large pup for his age and will according to my vet probably weigh 100 pounds when hes grown.

Okay, I'll shut up, but would like any thoughts on this

Thank you so much,   Aimee

Golden Retriever Discussions / Dry Skin
« on: October 09, 2006, 05:12:03 am »

Hi All

I'm wondering what diet you all feed your Goldens, I have a 2 year old I got from a rescue in May. She was 122 pounds when I got her so she went on a diet, I put her on the "Nutro Weight Management" dog food, she's down to about 100 pounds now. But she's getting flakey skin and her coat looks dull.  Any better diets or supplements I could put her on. I also give her two 3V cap's a day.

Thanks for any help

Golden Retriever Discussions / Hand Feeding
« on: August 08, 2006, 02:29:38 pm »

HI

I have a 17 week old Golden, he is a sweetheart, but lately he seems to only want to eat his food out of my hand..
It started with him wanting some of his food on the floor, seemed to get him started, then he would eat out of his dish. I would sometimes give him some out of my hand. Today, he only wants to eat his dog food out of my hand. This is really strange to me, any thoughts??  Will he out grow this. is it a really bad thing??  I have read that it can be good to have your scent on their food? But of course I can't feed him only with my hand forever.
Hope you don't all think I'm crazy, this has never happened before and I've had dogs for most of my life.

Thanks for any thoughts or help

My new puppy Remington, I call him Remy. he's 3 and a half months old now and as sweet as he can be.
I got him from the local Golden retriever rescue. I had got a 2 year old female a month earlier. They are the best of friends now, she needed to loose weight and he is really helping with that. I couldn't be happier with my new Goldens, this all started in May. seems like they've been here forever.
Here's a picture of Remy

Golden Retriever Discussions / My rescued Golden

Hi All

I've had my Golden 3 weeks today, she is 2 years old and was pretty much ignored by her former owners. I'm starting to see  a different girl now that she's been here 3 weeks, she's starting to play and she's starting to chew like a pup, she really worked out on my throw rug tonight..  I put bitter apple on it to stop her chewing..  I'm wondering if this is normal at 2 years old to be chewing or if she's acting like a puppy because she was never able to before??
Also, I'm thinking of getting a male Golden pup this summer maybe July for her to play with and wonder what you all think of that idea??  I guess in her last home she had a lab to play with.

Anyway thanks for any help or advice I've never had a Golden before and would be grateful for any help

Golden Retriever Pictures / Rescued 2 year old golden
« on: May 05, 2006, 09:22:38 pm »
I just got my first Golden, from the local Golden retriever rescue. She is 2 years old, seems very sweet, she is way over weight, needs to lose at least 30 pounds.
Just wondered if any of you have any pointers on this breed, things to look for, things that will make her life better, and good ways to help her lose this weight.
So far she hasn't bothered my cat's much, just wants to smell them. ;-)  Of course they don't know that, but I think they will be friends soon.

Anyway, thanks for any thoughts

Australian Shepherd Discussions & Pictures / Aussie question
« on: April 02, 2006, 09:50:02 pm »
I have an 11 month old Aussie mix, he seems to be mostly Aussie from what I can tell. first he looks like an Aussie.
My questions are, I know they are a herding breed, so is that why he LOVES to chase my cats. I yell at him he stops, but only until the next time, he really seems to love the chase. He also loves to mouth me and my husband. another thing if we yell he stops but again only until the next time.
His biggest problem is he will bite if restrained.he's been like this since I got him at 7 weeks. although I didn't really have to restrain him till about 5 months when he went in for x-rays. The vet had a hard time with him, she said he really is a good dog, just has this problem. And at home we really don't try to restrain him because there is no reason too, but I would like to change this behavior.

Anyway, I would appriecate any thoughts on this, I have had dogs all my life but never had one with so much energy, he is a little handful

Thanks for any help or thoughts

I don't know how to put Kobi's picture at the start of my post, but I am putting the jpg here for all to see.
You all helped me a few months ago when a trainer hung him. He's almost 9 months old now, still a handful, but we love him.

Mixed Breed Discussion / More on bad trainer
« on: November 19, 2005, 07:19:14 pm »
Ok, I have have found some other people in my area that have had their dogs hung at the same dog trainer, I haven't been able to contact them yet, but I will. What I want to know is, is there anywhere I can find the rules on dog training, I mean the hanging part. The local ASPCA said it is a way of training BUT only used in an extreme problem, like the dog is attacking you, someone else or another dog, and I mean trying to kill, and even then when they hang them their back feet don't leave the floor.
I would really like to get a lot of people around here together and see what we can do to STOP this so called trainer, FOR GOOD..  He is abusive!!!
If any of you don't know what I'm talking about, check my other post called, "Bad Trainer??"

Thanks for any help

Mixed Breed Discussion / Bad trainer??
« on: November 15, 2005, 12:21:43 am »

I just took my 6 month old Aussie mix Kobi to an obedience class.the first thing they wanted to do was have him be held down, Kobi has always had a problem being restrained. so anyway, I was having a problem getting him down. The trainer came over got VERY rough with him and Kobi bit him. So the trainer hung him, he had a choke chain on so it was even worse, the poor pup shit himself and his lips turned blue, he almost passed out. I was SICK!!!
He did behave after, but I think there has to be a better way to train. the bad news is I live in a rural area and this guy is the ONLY trainer around.
Please any thoughts on this, I really wanted some training for him, he's a really good dog in every other way and loves people.

Thanks,  Aimee

Mixed Breed Discussion / I need some help
« on: October 05, 2005, 12:21:10 pm »
Hi All,

You've all been great when I've asked questions before so I have another. I have a very high energy Austrailian shep mix. I just brought him home from being fixed today, he's 5 months old. when he got home he a little bit of the runs so I tryed to give him Pepto Bismal (sp) I held him by his collar and he got upset growled and tryed to bite me. he has always had a problem being restrained, my friend works at the vets and she told me when they tryed to give him his shot before his surgery he fought like they were trying to kill him. other than that he is a really good loving dog.  I don't want a biteing dog, any thoughts on how to help him with his restraint problem.. I mean even in the car, I have him in a seatbelt, he SCREAMS the whole ride he really HATES being restrained.  He needs to behave when at the vets if they have to give him meds or whatever. and I'm concerned that he might have other problems and maybe this is just a symptom? At least that what one person told me. I love my little Kobi, I don't want to give up o him.  Just feeling depressed tonight, and concerned.  Thanks for ANY help and ideas on how to help him.

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Pets from the hurricane
« on: September 14, 2005, 10:05:26 pm »
My son works for the ASPCA in Washington DC he was sent down to New Orleans to help with the pets.
There is thousands of dogs and cats that need help, he told me that the shelter he is helping with is gettin 700 pets a day, the work the people are doing down there is unbelieveable!!  He said he couldn't believe that people left so many dogs behind. they need all the help they can get.
I know people need help too, but we can't forget the pets.
I was surprised to hear that people are actually coming in and stealing purbred dogs from the shelter, theres no way to stop them..  But that's not the problem, they really need help, money and supplys.
I just felt the need to tell more people, that the dogs need help, many owners will never come to get there pets... As a pet lover it's hard for me to believe that anyone could leave there baby's behind, but they do..

Okay I'll shut up now, just had to day SOMETHING they need HELP..

Thanks,  Aimee
