Collars, crates, & other cool things / Backpack for my Saint
« on: December 05, 2005, 12:29:16 pm »
Does anyone know where I can find a backpack for Romy (my wonderful saint bernard) to wear when we go on our long walks, etc.  He is only 50 pounds right now but is estimated to be 200 as an adult, and Im looking for item that he can carry his own water, etc.  I have found backpacks for medium size dogs but have yet to find anything close to what I will need for Romy and the people at the pet stores are completely clueless!  One girl actually thought I was looking for a backpack for me to carry him in when I went for walks (and I had him with me at the time)!!!  Any info would be much appreciated.

Brightest Blessings
Mel and Romy

Remembering those no longer with us. / Zeus never forgotten
« on: September 14, 2005, 08:24:06 pm »
I have never "purchased" a pet before, all of my four legged babies are rescues (dogs, cats, etc.). I've always been drawn to Saints.  About 5 years ago there was a Saint in need of a home.  He was 7 months old and he was originally purchased by a couple for their young daughter (can you guess what movie inspired the purchase and the name).  But when the parents decided to divorce, neither of them wanted the sole responsibility of such a large dog and were planning on taking him to the shelter.  We just happen to have the space and means for such a rescue.  So, we added a new addition to our large extended family and renamed him "Zeus".  This gentle giant blessed us with so much love and laughter.  He was the perfect dog.  We had him neutered right away.  A few months later his hip popped out of place and was immediately taken in for repair.  He did ok for awhile but we notice soon after that his other hip was in need of repair too.  Unfortunatly, Zues became very sick and at first we thought he had rat poisoning (we had a neighbor that was not fond of our large dogs and threatned on many occasions - don't worry, we took care of that situation).  Even though we tried many treatments and spent a lot of $$$$, Zues' health continued to decline.  And at only 1.5 years young, his life was cut way too short.  :'( The necropsy lab results reported that he had had bone cancer. I was devastated to say the least.  Even as I write this message I still shed tears for him.  On Sept. 16, 2005, it will be me and my husbands 10 year anv!  And guess what!  We are once again adding a gentle giant to our family.  He will be 8 weeks old.  I've been waiting 4 years for this and am very excited.  His name will be "Romulus" (son of Zeus)!  :D I hope to have Romy a part of our family for a very long time (long in large dog years anyway).  But even with our new addition, Zeus will never be forgotten, I will always cherish the time I did have with him.
Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this rather long novel.
