I am wondering if you all let your dogs off leash for swimming.  We took Sophie and crew to the beach and I let them off leash.  Sophie ran into the water and I was really afraid that she was going to swim away or get caught in the current...Am I being over protective?  She just doesn't recall well and doesn't listen so I am afraid if she got going, she'd just keep going and not come back!  Also, she took off over the seaweed covered rocks and I was afraid she'd break a leg- why doesn't she have any common sense!
Anyway, here are some pix of the crew.

Leonberger Pictures / Sophie and Binky-why no one visits us....
« on: April 03, 2009, 08:41:32 am »
Here are some recent pix of the crew and why no one likes to come over to our house :)  Actually, now that we're not living in the middle of no where, we have had a lot of people coming over and Sophie can be a little more affectionate than people expect.  My dad was visiting and ended up with quite the lapdog (see pic below).  As you can see, Sophie has grown up a LOT!  And yes, that is my son in a dog crate.  Leo loves to hang out in the crate and also licks people-hmmm, maybe we need to socialize him with humans!

Anything Non-Dog Related / NDR-Goats need new home...anyone in Maine?
« on: April 03, 2009, 08:15:55 am »
Hi Everyone,
Well, I have some sad news- I have to re-home Jasper and Ferdinand, my 3 y/o Nigerian Dwarf goats.  We were planning to move back to our other house this spring but the housing market is so bad, we can't sell the house we're in now.  As we are in the city, the ordinance people will not allow me to bring the goats here.  The goats were boarded over the winter but I am now commuting 2 hours a day to feed and water them...  I feel so awful but it's not fair for them to be alone all the time.  I just feel so guilty and never thought I would have to re-home an animal, but can't find a way to make this work.
If anyone is in Maine or knows of anyone in Maine who might be interested in giving these guys a great home, please PM me.  I am so worried about finding good people to take them and I am not sure how to find the right family-any advice on that front would also be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi All,
Another question about Sophie and I really hope you all will have some advice!  She turned 1 in January and now weighs as much as I do.  I use a gentle leader on her as our trainer recommended and it has helped BUT Sophie is now taller than I am and if she manages to jump up, I can't pull up on the leader and have no control.  She had settled down about seeing other dogs when on leash, but is reverting back to going crazy.
I am pretty sure we scarred some kids for life yesterday.  We took Leo and all the dogs for a walk and it was a nice day so there was a big line of people (with dogs and kids) at the ice cream place we live near.  Sophie saw one of the dogs and started leaping up and barking.  Her bark is very deep and scary and the sight of her jumping, lunging and barking must have terrified everyone.  I was so embarrassed.  What should I say in a situation like that?  I have tried "she's friendly, just loud" but people are scared anyway.  I just tried to get away as fast as possible (hard to do with me, DH, our son and the rest of the dogs).  Anyone else have this problem/a solution?  Thanks!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / How cold is too cold?
« on: January 12, 2009, 12:54:55 pm »
Well, it has been ridiculously cold out lately and is supposed to get even worse this week.  Needless to say, I have not been enthusiastic about walking the dogs but Sophie is awful if she doesn't get exercise;  so how cold is too cold for walking?  Is it safe to walk the dogs when it is 20/10/0/-5?  I know they have fur but if my eyeballs feel like they're going to freeze, aren't the dogs' noses and eyes cold too, and their feet?  Just wondering what you guys think!

We took the four dogs and Leo to the park and fed the ducks yesterday.  I can't believe the weather is still so nice- I hope it lasts but I suspect the really cold weather is on its way!
BTW, I am now using a gentle leader head collar for Sophie at the trainer's recommendation and it has been working really well!  I never could have brought her near the duck pond before or I would have been in it!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Need help with grooming Pyr
« on: November 10, 2008, 09:43:40 am »
Binky's coat is out of control and I don't know what to do!  Does anyone know a site that gives detailed instructions on how to groom a Pyr?  Or have some advice?  I have her professionally groomed a few times a year and brush her with a wire brush and the furminator in between groomings.  However, her fur is suddenly in big clumpy masses all over and I don't know how to fix it.  It is matted but it's more like felted together if that makes sense?  It has never done this before so I don't know if it's from Sophie chewing on her when they play or from the rain or what.  Any ideas- she looks awful and I'm sure it feels bad too.

Leonberger Pictures / Halloween-Leo the Lion and his Leo

Just a couple pictures of Leo in his costume and the dogs.  The dogs were rather alarmed that he had grown fur and a tail but Leo seemed very happy- I think he might think he's a dog!

Leonberger Discussions / Sophie is driving me crazy- vent/need advice
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:15:21 pm »
I am at my wit's end with Sophie.  She is 9 months old now and is showing no signs of settling down.  I know that big dogs take longer to mature but she is just over the top.  She doesn't seem to be learning any of the rules of our house.  She grabs food off tables and counters, grabs food from me and the baby, constantly bothers the other animals, jumps all over me, is still "play" biting and mouthing, growls and pulls on walks... the list goes on and on.  No training seems to help.  The prong I use for walking her worked for about a week- now she has almost pulled me over twice.
We have a trainer coming to the house on Monday to give us some advice but do any of you have any advice for me?  Are Leo pups generally like this?  Binky (our Pyr) had a few moments of hyper but generally settled down by 6 months.  Sophie literally looks for trouble- if I put something down, she grabs it, if I take it away, she'll bother one of the dogs, if I remove her from the dogs, she'll get into the trash, etc.
She gets a nice long walk every day although, I am starting to dread walking with her.  We have a big yard that she runs around in and plenty of bones and toys to chew on.  I give her a ton of attention and she is rarely by herself.  I don't know what more I can do! She is so sweet and good when she's good but most of the time she's not! Thanks for letting me complain and any advice/ideas to tire her out would be great!

Been MIA again- just moved BACK to our old house temporarily (was rented, they left suddenly, needs work...) There has been a lot going on and it's a huge adjustment for the dogs.  We went from the middle of nowhere to a very busy area so they are barking at everything- good times :)  I'm sure the neighbors have missed us and are thrilled that we have yet another dog now!  Sophie is getting enormous and she and Leo are best buds.  Some pix.

Hi Everyone,
Yay, we finished our "flip" house today (took us 10 weeks) so now I have time for BPO!  We took a walk with all the dogs to the beach today- Sophie is finally interested in the water.  The prong collar has worked wonders on Sophie- we can finally take everyone out together.  She still pulls a bit but I definitely have a lot more control.
As for other updates, Leo is almost a year old now-time flies- and he just LOVES animals.  He can gently pet the animals now (instead of pulling and poking) and when we go out and see other dogs, he points and squeals and wants to pet them.  Wonder where he gets it from :)  He's not quite sure about the goats though!

Leonberger Discussions / Thoughts on prong collars? Need HELP!
« on: July 29, 2008, 06:25:27 pm »
Ahhhh- Sophie is out of control! We have been sooo soooo busy lately that we haven't had time to take Sophie out in public much.  And now I am afraid to!  I was walking her the other day and there were summer people staying in the house at the end of our road (we live out in nowhere so usually, there are no people/animals on our walks).  Their beagle came flying out to see us and Sophie went nuts- growling and barking and almost pulled me over.  I managed to turn us around and get away but this weekend we finally took a day off and took all the dogs to a doggy "parade" and "show" (just a cute little small town thing, very informal and Chicklet won "cutest" :))  I had Sophie on a gentle leader harness which had been working great-got it after the beagle incident.  We get to the dog area and she literally pulled me down and DRAGGED me across the pavement to get to a dog, growling and barking the whole time.  My pants ripped open and my knee is all torn up.  So embarassing!  Fortunately, she was fine once she got close to the dogs.
Why is she like this?  People were afraid of her (she's 6 months and BIG).  I went and bought a prong collar which the breeder reccommened but can't bring myself to use it-it looks so mean.  Does anyone here use one?  Does it work?  Sorry so long but she is going to weigh more than I do soon and I can't let her be so crazy!  here are some pics- almost as big as Binky already.
