Newfoundland Discussions / I SWEAR! we're still alive!
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:10:04 am »
I feel like i've been doing this every 6 months!  I don't know where the time goes, or why the sequence of events keep happening, but i just keep reminding myself that everything happens for a reason!

But i do feel bad for neglecting my BPO!

Fumble, stacy and i are all still alive!  We did have a close call in Sept there with my mother though.  At the end of august/early Sept my mom was admitted to the hospital.  I left the big guy with Stacy and her boyfriend, John (who moved in with us) and drove to Albany, NY where my parents live now.  I got there around 11 am, and by 2 pm she coded (no pulse, no BP), and then by 7 pm she was in emergency surgery until 1 am and we found her 1/3 of her small intestine was necrotic, and pretty much ready to go septic.  so thanks be to god she was okay.  The last three months have been chaotic since though.  She's been in and out of the hospital for weeks at a time, and things finally seem to be at status quo.  She's not getting better, but she's not getting worse.  KNOCK ON WOOD!

Fumble's been okay too.  Over the summer, i battled with the home cooked food.  First we tried Millet and Pork, then Fish and Potatoes... and neither for some reason seemed to sit well with his belly…
So now he’s on the Purina soy stuff that you get from the vet.  Plus the home cooked food was getting a little too expensive each week… probably because he weighs almost 180 lbs!  and with his vet bills every 2 weeks.  I feel like I live at the vet… or have the last 6 months.  I think after looking at my receipts I had been there at least once every 2 weeks for a straight 6 months.  Needless to say I had to recently take a loan out to pay for his vet bills..  but god love him!  He’s my big guy, and I’d do anything for him!  So I guess now the next thing is getting an appt with an allergist to find out what type of allergy he has.  I know finding out foods is tough.  But he keeps getting these “Rods” in his ears, which from my understanding is much worse than yeast.  And then staph infections on his belly and groin area.  He doesn’t even get dry spots anymore to heed as a warning.  Just all of a sudden it’s full blown staph!
Poor thing practically lives on pills everyday!

But he is still as cute as ever!  I added some pictures taken of him recently too.

I hope everyone is gearing up for a very happy Holiday!  I can’t believe it’s already Christmas and the New Year.  I swear the time flies by WAY too fast for me!

Newfoundland Discussions / well... bubble boy fumble has risen again!
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:44:05 am »
Hey all... what a weekend!  First, i finally got a hold of fumble's nutritionist!  Phew!  That took forever!  We are going to try some new things now to see if we can't get him on a diet that doens't upset his little tummy.

But!  Yesterday afternoon i noticed there was a little red in his stool.  Well he pooped again 20 minutes after the first time and there was drippy red.  i didn't know what to think, but it could have been strawberries that he ate that morning. although, i think i knew it wasn't likely to be true! because they don't digest like that! and well... it's fumble.  So last night I waited until he went again, just to be sure.  It was POURING AND THUNDERING! for like 5 hours straight here.  I had to try to get him to go out because he doesn't like to poop when its raining out.  But after standing outside like a drown rat for 20 minutes he finally started circling.  AND.... drumroll... the blood was still there.  I ran back inot the house got a bag to get the poop and called the ER Vet.  We went over to the vet, all the while trying to get him into my jeep during a lightening storm!  he didn't seem to notice anything was wrong though.  so it was weird.  So the vet tested him for dehydration and what not.  Took blood sample and checked out the stool.  After 2 1/2 hours they sent us on our way with an antibiotic.  but now i have to watch for "shooting blood" coming out of his bum.  If that happens then he'll have to go and get hospitalized and Ived.  So who knows...

got to LOVE my bubble boy.  never a dull moment in his life!

Newfoundland Pictures / Fumble's 3 TODAY!
« on: July 20, 2008, 04:37:36 pm »
Hey everyone! Fumble is 3 today!  I can't believe the time hast just flown right by.  I feel like just yesterday he was this little fluff ball.  well actually he still is my little fluff ball.  He still doesn't seem that big to me, but everyone says he is, so i'll believe them!  lol!

Fumble had a great birthday!  For the last 3 days he's had, soft serve, a blue whale cookie, doggie canolli, frozen yogurt, and a birthday cake!  Phew!

I got him a bunch of new toys, but the best one has to be the ice block thingie i got him.  You pitch up this plate to be off the ground and then put the block of ice in the tray.  Oh it was great!  I put some yogurt, blueberries, and cookies in the water and then froze it.  it was greaT!  He aboslutely lOVED IT!!

I'll post some pictures in the next post for everyone to see.. by far my favorite pictures are the ones of him with the yogurt container!! lol!  and the tongue with the ice block!!

Hi everyone.  It's us!  I swear we're still alive.  And like i said in the title, we've neglected our BPO for quite some time, and we understand if you all want to shun us!

It's funny... does anyone ever feel this way?  That it's busy but not really at the same time?  I feel like i'm always doing something for the most part but am not really busy... weird!

Update on Fumble... he's doing well.. i'm really quite t-o'ed because i'm working on a homecooked diet with him.  I'm working with a pet nutritionist and the first diet she gave us gave him diarrhea and now the poor guy is back on Orijen fresh fish and i'm keeping my fingers crossed that the staph or ear infections don't come back.  I've contacted the nutritionist but have yet to hear from her in a while and am A. starting to get worried if somethings happened to her, and B. if not A then peaved because it's been a while and i want my dog to get better!

But other than that, he seems to be doing well.  Still rolling around on the floor, yapping up a storm, and whispering till he's blue in the face!  He's been spending his days out in his kiddie pool.  Go figure, we live less than a mile from the beach and yet we hang out on the back deck just to stay with him in his pool on the nice days!  lol!  Hey, i can still smell the ocean!

Here are some pictures of the big guy... the first ones are fluffy mess becuase he still had his undercoat in.  I trimmed him on Friday night and then the pool pictures are his new do (still in progress, man that guys got a lot of undercoat!).

Newfoundland Discussions / fumble is still alive! i swear!
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:35:53 pm »
Hi everyone!  I swear we're all still alive!!  still here!  we've been really busy, stacy started waitressing a while back but now that the summer season has begun she's super busy working doubles almost 3 times a week.  I've been busy with work and am actually going on my first "business trip" to hot-lanta in 2 weeks.  Then we've been busy keeping up wiht my parents who are in the process of moving, and there's been some health problems with my mom, but she's getting better.

the fumbs is doing well.  he's just getting over a MAJOR staph infection.  my vet said that he spoke to a dermatology vet and he said that there really was only one drug that would really work.  i can't spell it, but when i went to pick it up, i asked the vet tech if there were crushed diamonds in it.  lol.  i think the majority of the cost was due to fumble's size, which is now up to 175 lbs. he was on 200 pills, 5 in the morning and 5 at night, now we're at the end of the second bottle, so i've got to go for a re-check.  i'm thinking about even doing a home cooked diet at this point.  i've been feeding him orijen and that's a clean diet, but i'm thinking i might need to try something else.  but we'll see what the vet says.

but i just wanted everyone to know that the fumbs is still breathin and alive!  I'll take some pictures of him this weekend at the beach so you can all see his giant sizeness.  lol.  and his paws still look big for his body!  if he gets any larger i will definately be suprised, but with him ANYTHING'S POSSIBLe! lol!

I hope everyone else is doing well.  I'll try to get on to BPO more often, i definately miss my internet family!

Collars, crates, & other cool things / The Greatest Toy Ever!!
« on: February 02, 2008, 11:56:57 am »
The week after Christmas eiren and i were out and about shopping, and of course we had to go into the dog boutique! Eiren comes out of the shop with another toy for fumble. Now please understand im the first one to spoil the big guy, but as the one that cleans the house, the toys can get in the way, esp the ones that are half eaten, fluff falling out, henriettas/earls without feet or heads, and squekers that no longer squeak. Now i've been able to get rid of a few gradually without either of them noticing, but for Christmas, between everyone in the family and friends, fumble got 10 new toys!! ANd the last thing i thought he needed was another. Well it was the Leo from Canine Genius.
http://www.caninegenius.com/products_leo.php
This is the greatest toy alive! esp when its too cold to play outside with the big guy. it gets all his energy out and he gets treats too! He is hysterical playing with it and i will make sure to get video of it this week. He has figured out that he can chew the bottom and made a big hole without anyone noticing, but we're trying to stay on top of it with the next one. But I think everyone should have this toy for their dog!!

Newfoundland Pictures / Sorry we've been MIA
« on: February 02, 2008, 11:44:01 am »
Hey guys,
sorry that we've been MIA recently! Between the holidays and being in a wedding in NJ (traveling back and forth for stuff) things have been crazy!! We drove home on Sunday to find a snow storm hitting the cape! I love the snow, just not driving home in it after 3 hours already in the car and then riding with it for 2 hours!! But when we got home fumble was itching to get outside and play!! So here are a few pictures of the big guy outside the day after!

I know I mentioned earlier that Fumble opened his presents early, and that I didn't get a chance to take pictures, were going to try to "re-inact" it after he's had his bath on Friday :) All the gifts were great!!
When he opened them up, he loved the blanket because it was round and he held it in his mouth for so long. He didn't even care about any of the other toys! But then he caught on! The camel looks an awful lot like Fumble with his tounge hanging out of the side of his mouth! and the sweet potato chews are perfect! we're gonna have to get more of those, they are definatly better than pigs ears, and have come in handy trying to ween him back down from 3 meals a day. He gets really hungry or expects food at 12 so I give him one of the chews!!
I swear we'll post pictures this weekend!

We call it "happy holidays, a 'la straight out of a Dickens Novel!"

And here are a few outtakes!
We took these pictures before the snow so we used Buffalo Snow and Fumble loved it! He tried to eat it just like he does regular snow, but was very let down when all it did was seperate and stick in his mouth

Newfoundland Discussions / Fumble got the big "snip snip"
« on: December 01, 2007, 12:35:19 am »
Hi everyone!  i just thought i'd give you all an update.  Fumble went in for his neuter/gastropexy yesterday.  i didn't know if they would keep him or not, but i was a nervous wreck... mostly because i didn't know what to expect.  i knew it was an incisional gastropexy and not the laproscopic, but i just didn'tknow and was nervous.. soo... i raked the entire yard (filled up 17 bags of leaves!)  ... lol only for it to be windy today and blow the leaves back in the yard.  buuut... the vet called yesterday and said that fumble did great and that he was awake and that "he really loved " fumble.  he said they would keep him overnight jsut to monitor and we could pick him up after 9 this morning.  so at 9 i called and we went down to get him.  the vet on duty said that he had a little staph infection in his "scrotum" area, so he's back on benadryl.  but the poor guy, he's all shaved on his belly and bum.. and he can't seem to get comfortable and he's crying a lot :(  I feel so bad for him.  the vet gave us a pain killer to give him every 6 hours if it's bad.. but the poor guy just seems to glum :(  I know that it's just the first 24 hours and that it's going to be better by tomorrow, but its just so hard listening to him cry.  i was supposed to go to a holiday party tonight, but i wouldn't want to leave him at home alone, i'd be nervous about it the the whole time i was there and i wouldn't have any fun... so it's gonna be us with fumbs curled up watching lifetime and hallmark holiday movies.  I just wanted to give you all an update on the gastropexy and neuter!
But stacy and i got all of the BPO holiday cards stamped and are going to put them out Monday!  and all we have to do is get a box for the Secret Santa gift too! :) so that's good!!!

Newfoundland Pictures / Which one is the bear?
« on: November 23, 2007, 05:51:06 am »
LOL!!!  My mom sent me the Travelers insurnace magazine ad with the bear in the sink.  she thought that it reminded her of the time she saw fumble jump in one time. well on thanksgiving morning, we were trying to take his picture and we attempted peanut butter to entice him.  but stacy must have left the spoon in the sink.  fumble jumped right in and just kept licking the spoon while it was still in the sink.  i grabbed the camera, because it looked awfully familiar to a picture of a magazine ad!   ;) :D
let me know what you thinK!

Newfoundland Discussions / the Fumbs update
« on: November 21, 2007, 04:42:09 pm »
Hey everyone!!  First let me say Happy Thanksgiving!  i can't believe it's already Thanksgiving, where in heaven's name did the time go??  I feel bad cause i've just been posting on other peoples posts here and there when i get a chance.  but i have today off, yah!  so i figured first thing on my list would be to address my BPO absence.

Fumble's doing goood.... he's got his typical newfness, where he's listening about 90% of the time!  lol! but that's a 2 year old!  he's such a goof ball though, i was wondering if anyone else's dogs do this.  he likes to carry my keys in his mouth during his walks.  I have a huge bone that i have his waste bags in and he loves to just job along with it in his mouth!
Update on his health... left knee seems to have healed well, he's back to himself.  now i just feel like i'm "watching" the right knee and waiting.  he's on lots of gluc/chondr, so maybe we can prolong the onset of the right knee tear... but now i go onto his tummy!  The big neuter is scheduled for the 11/30, and i was worried about still being on the fence about doing the gastropexy... but it was really random, i got the newfie catalog with newfie products and in it was a romance/chick lit novel that had a newfie in it.  so i had to read it!  i first started it, and oddly enough the owner was a twin!  weird!?!  i'm a twin!  lol!  so i just kept reading on, and now i'm getting to the end of the story.  and last night when i was reading, the newfie had to have an emergency gastropexy! i said, okay, i never even heard about gastropexy before the vet told me (i only knew of bloat), so that's my sign, that it's okay to get it done!  Unfortunately the vet i go to has to do it the old way, not laproscopicall y, so it's going to mean a big belly scar, but if it it means i'm taking extra precautions for my very fumbling fumble then so be it!

Stacy and i are going to try to take his holiday picture today, so i'm sure that there will be LTOS of outtakes!  i'll post them for you all to have a laugh! Have a great thanksgiving everyone!!

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Neuter/Gastropexy?
« on: October 31, 2007, 05:56:06 pm »
So... i made the big appointment to get fumble neutered next friday. the vet called tonight and left me a message about perhaps doing a gastropexy at the same time?  Anyone have anymore information on this??  I don't want the big guy getting any Gastric problems, but i had never heard of this before??  Help!
